Which is a very good point, that was the main driver, along with our history and the Spanish connection of course. At that time we needed a bit of luck and a couple more players, and we could have done it, but since when for various reasons it has all gone backwards.
As fans we are stuck with it because of who we are, Torres on the other hand is not. I think he is a decent honourable lad and stuck by us when he could have gone.
Now is not the time though, as Sunny said before, we are trying to bring in Suarez to compliment and support Torres as we have been short in the striker department for years, not replace him.
Lets see what happens if we do get Suarez, and give us time to identify a Torres replacement in the summer..........assuming of course he is fed up and want to move somewhere , abroad, to win things before it is too late for him.
I don't think we will be in a position to help on that front for a few years now.
Yes, there is the flip side, we have been without him for long periods of injury and he can look very disinterested at times, which is annoying as he is being paid good money.

I agree with all of that. I think he will stay until the summer, but I won't be at all surprised if he leaves then. We had a shit season and he stayed on board this summer. 2 is pushing it too far I think. If we go on a 10 game straight win sequence and get the Europa, then start spending then I could see him staying. Otherwise not. If it was me, if I'd have left a crap Liverpool for a great Athletico Madrid that had just won the CL and been in another final, but since I'd got there it had been shit and gone backwards - and I was one of the most wanted players on the planet, I wouldn't care how much the locals loved me. I'd be off.
