What about the strict Premier league rules about "tapping up" players while they are under contract? ???
i thought that too!! Surely there is a case there if the reports are even remotely true!
Unless the owners have given their permission. Lets face it, it wouldnt be a suprise.
sceptical is the best way forward here!

It depends on what Torres and his agent want, doesn't it? In reality players can walk away from their contracts whenever they choose. If Torres has told the club he would like a move, then it's just a case of encouraging a competitive bidding process to get the highest price.
I can't believe that he should have told the board that he wants to leave before he's actually talked to Roy eye to eye. He doesn't strike me as such a kind of person.

I think it's all bollocks some lazy journos made up.

Well it's that time of year isn't it? The "silly season" when the top journos are all on holiday and the teaboy gets to think up the news.

i would rather lose Torres than Gerrard or Mascherano simply because selling him allows us to replace him with 2 players (of highest calibre) meaning we have an option and not just one semi-broken best striker in the world.
I agree with this. Although I feel that sale needs to be abroad, not to another premiership team.

Hopefully Mascherano too. Though it's unlikely.

Jose Antonio Martin was quoted as saying Torres could be set to leave Anfield for another English club, but he has now claimed the comments have been fabricated.

"For many months I have not spoken to the England press because their quotes are totally false," he said. "Now is not the moment to speak about this issue because Torres is focused completely on his work for Spain.

"After the World Cup, (player-agency company) Bahia Internacional will possibly meet with the player but the truth is that Fernando has signed a deal with Liverpool which is for the present and the future."

Chelsea and Manchester City have been strongly linked with Torres.

Supersport news reports that Roman arrived in South Africa in an effort to tie up Torres' signing for £50 million.

I'd be absolutely gutted!

It's bollocks, Roman was already in SA for a start.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres says he wants to know what is really happening at the club before committing his future to the Reds.

The Spain frontman says he will seek talks with the board and new Reds coach Roy Hodgson after the World Cup in order to find out exactly what is going on at Anfield.

“I suppose that when the World Cup finishes I will speak to the people at Liverpool and they will explain to me the real situation of how things are at present, the future of the club. And I will talk to the new coach,†he said in an interview with El Mundo Deportivo.

Torres has been linked with a big-money move to the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and Inter Milan in recent weeks following Liverpool’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League and reports that the Merseyside club have debts of around £350million.

For the moment, however, Torres says he is not thinking beyond the World Cup.

“There’s time for that (Liverpool), but I want to finish the World Cup, go on holiday, as I haven’t had a holiday for three years, rest and then there will be time to talk about all of that - the situation isn’t going to change whether we talk soon or later,†he said.

The former Atletico Madrid striker refused to rule out a move away from Anfield, but says nothing will happen until after the World Cup.

“Honestly, teams won’t be able to do anything until the World Cup has finished. The players here prefer to wait - there is time,†he said.

See, I can't help but get pissed off when I read this sort of stuff, it's just inviting speculation, and he knows it. How hard is it to day 'I'm staying', full stop. Like Forlan has with Athletico.

I really don't know where he'll be next season, I doubt he does either.

But I think he would consider joining another Premiership club and have always said so.

I also wouldn't sell him for a penny less than 60M

Cos he may still be making his mind up. Christ, in his position, with the season he just had you may be thinking a fresh start in a less physically combative league may be what you need. Add in the Champions League factor & it makes more sense.

I think he'll stay, but there's obvious reasons why even a player who relishes our unique support as much as Torres would consider moving.

Yes, but like it or not his absences and sulking are part of the reason for what our last season was like. And like it or not Gerrards poor form and sulking were also part of the reason. Personally I dont have any sympathy for players who are well paid and well looked after, wanting to leave, part way through contracts that they have signed, so that they can play CL football, when their own form is part of the reason we cant offer them CL football.

It pisses me off too Anita

We know things are out of hand when a player says that he'll decide who he plays for, and where and when he'll speak to his employers.

In this case he seems to have decided that he'll speak to them after the WC and his subsequent holiday.

If this article quotes his true words then he seems to have forgotten that he has a contract to fulfill and the basic courtesy of speaking to those who pay his wages first.

I might be old school but this is a very high handed attitude.

Largely agree. One can only hope he's playing a long game and trying to put pressure on the owners and the board to ensure that Roy is supported in the transfer market.

Maybe JJ but can't he just concentrate on being a footballer in a football team and worry about who his teamates are when he's a Manager or at contract negotiations when they're due?

Well Gerrard's not going anyway.

As for Torres, to think the problem just lay with rafa is naive, he clearly doesnt enjoy receiving a kicking week after week. He seemed to relish it at first but as it became clear it was exacerbating his injury problems he has become disheartened.

I do think he owes us one more season, but putting yourself in his shoes, & trying to think without your red tinted glasses on, it's easy enough to see why he may be considering his future elsewhere.

As I said though, I'm sure he'll give is another season, he may not be as loyal to us as he was Atletico, but that side of his nature is still there, albeit blunted by time & reality, as happens with us all as we get older & more pragmatic & cynical with it.

You defended Alonso's reason to move. Anita, and that was after nearly winning the league!

You cannot be pissed off for Torres considering his posititon after finishing 7th, having no budget, no new owners, and a new manager.

Again, I substantially agree with that. Nowadays this kind of stance is much more "the done thing" for big name players than it used to be, but that doesn't make it right.

Hey hey, easy now. That was a totally different situation, and everyone knows it. Alonso was treated like crap by Benitez, and was left with very little choice but to leave.

Torres' circumstances are totally different.

I would imagine the supposed imminence of the club's sale is pretty much what he wants to talk about. If Broughton/Purslow guarantees new owners and big transfer funds before the end of the year, he'll stay. If they umm and aah, he'll think about leaving.

The only thing that makes me think Torres will stay is for a lack of options of clubs to go to. I really don't think he wants to go to another English club.

He's just as likely to take a regular kicking at Chelsea.

FWIW I think playing for Barca or Inter or whoever would suit him a lot less well than playing in England. His strengths are pace, power and directness; when he plays for Spain, you can see him getting bored watching the midfielders pass the ball endlessly around.
