Alberto was indeed very very good and contributed enormously to the fine performance last night, notwithstanding the opposition. He undoubtedly has class. However before we all get totally carried away, one great game doesn't mean that he is the answer to all our prayers.

I also remember the game he played against Bolton where he was absolutely woeful and seemed intimidated by the physical nature of the Premiership. He was afforded the time and space last night to show off his considerably talent. The real test will come when things are a lot tighter in the centre, when he is hounded constantly by the opposition and he has little time or space to "do his thing"

I seem to recall that many posters were of the opinion that Alonso's poor second season form was more to do with the fact that he was "found out" When he was denied the time and space by the opposition to use the ball constructively, he and the team as a whole, were less effective. So was last season's brilliance down to Alonso becoming more effective under increased time and space constraits or did the midfield somehow work the opposition to the extent that Xabi had the required time and space?

Either way, Alberto, for all his promise has a long way to go to justify the £20m price tag. Let's hope, irrespective of how it happens, for all or sakes he does.

I dunno, I thought that it took Alonso, despite his quality, to his final seasons before he got the hang of not being mugged with the ball.

Personally I though that Xabi was excellent in his first season Doc but it did seem after that, that the opposition gave him a lot less space and time on the ball after that first season, therefore reducing the effectiveness of his overall game.

I don't know if his upturn in form last season was down to him learning to work his magic with less space and time on the ball or for some other reason.
Perhaps someone else would care to enlighten me.

He just seemed to me to always think he had slightly more time on the ball than he did, even in his first season, as excellent as his passing was. I had that impression from the get-go in away fixtures.

Alonso did develop a knack of getting people sent off while they were trying to mug him.

One of the many things about Xabi we have missed this season

Alonso did very well in his first season, other teams adapted, pressed him more and his form dipped as well. He then came back better than ever.

Other teams adapted? By doing what? Crowding him when in possession?

And then when he came back back "better than ever" what happened?

They all forgot?

His first season he really babysat the CBs, and distributed from distance.

As time went on, he both pushed up somewhat (which was neccesary) and he was targetted and pressed as soon as he received the ball. He also lost some form.

It's not like he was poor or anything, and he was well capable of making space for himself a lot with his good touch.

He really hit his stride the last season, now he's gone. Obviously there are all sorts of other factors, especially who was playing next to him.

It's not exactly a controversial account of his time at Liverpool, I wouldn't have thought.

the truth is its hard to explain alonso's slump in form (by his standards) what's clear is alonso was more motivated than ever to prove to rafa he had made a mistake by putting him up for sale.

I think someone should produce a chalkboard to illustrate the point to Brendan. It won't convince him, but at least it will allow him to recycle some tired humour.

Which is what he does best, after all.

i'm starting to find the o'tomkins chalkboard thing funny due to the sheer repetitiveness.

In fairness, so do I, I'm just being a bitch.

Watching that video shows again why Gerrard needs to be taken off free kicks. Aquaman put in that cross with such pace and beat the 1st man!

And corners. If I hear one fucking commentator more foolishly go on about about how good Stevie's corner taking is, just as it sails toward the opposite corner or hits the first man I'll cry.

I've not been quiet at all, I'm fucking delighted he had a magnificent game, because it shows what happens when Lucas doesn't play and will hopefully mean the end of Lucarse's painful Liverpool career.

That said, my fears about Purple being unsuited to this league, and another Morientes, are in no way going to be allayed by one great display against a dismal and doomed Portsmouth
He needs to do it week in, week out against the top. Middle and bottom clubs
[/quote]

At least it is one great performance. Which is one great performance more than Benitez goldenboy have managed the whole career in Liverpool!
