Good performances all round today - but as the title says, this evening belongs to the man from Rome;

Sharp, quick thinking, incisive, precise, creative - Christ we could have done with that over the last few months.

Alberto has been used to Liverpool for some time, but I'd like to think this is the first the Liverpool fans have seen of the player I loved watching for Roma.

Let's hope he starts against Old Trafford, because dropping him would be criminal.

We will for certain if Gerrard gets suspended.

Not that it should make a difference.

lets be honest though we just beat a poor portsmouth side, aquilani was given a lot of room to operate. i don't see fletcher and the rest giving him anywhere near as much time and space.

that being said he played well and he deserves a chance but who knows if he's even fit enough to play 2 games in a week
I like this line mate. It isnt a matter of i told you so's or anything like that. Im just really chuffed that everyone can now see what a few of us (who follow Italian football) have seen and expect from him. He's a great great player and just needs a run of games now to show that this is the player i knew he was.

He was excellent tonight. Great interplay, scored and had an assist. I'm not going to turn this into a Lucas bashing but it's clear Aquilani offers so much more. He should be a guaranteed starter. Should.

even if gerrard is suspended he wot start, yossi will play in the hole with maxi and kuyt on the flanks.

Definitely did very well in this game, but he was given lots and lots of time on the ball. It is quite plain that he can be bullied, and that he doesn't fancy a tackle. The jury is out on whether his obvious ability can make him the time he needs when he doesn't play against mugs.

The fact that his competition has been Lucas means we should have a clearer idea of whether that is the case, or not, and he should have been given far more experience in the league.
I think your being unfair on him tonight Farky. He has looked lightweight so far and scared to get dug in but tonight against YES poor opposition, but very physical opposition in Brown and O'hara he held his own and for the first time (regardless of the forward play) i was really heartened by how much he got stuck in and how many 50/50s he won. He did get a lot of space going forward though, no arguments there, but his movement was so good he made the space.

I would start him at Old Trafford.

In fact, I wouldn't change the team much at all, bar the dropping of Insua for Kelly. We need a winning run and we need confidence. Keeping your faith in a side is the way to do it.

We do have the talent on the pitch to pick up three points at Old Trafford, providing we use it.

He'll play Aqua against Lille, though, and Lucas against United (which does have it's logic)

I think saying pompy is a poor side is missing the point, the point being that the majority of sides that come to anfield will do what pompy did try and put bodies behind the ball, the way to open them up is lightning fast interchanges so they get stretched and can't stay compact. playing masher and lucas together in these types of matches is almost pointless.

Very good performance tonight, I thought he looked a bit rusty in the first 20 mins or so but that wouldn't be a surprise given how little he's played.

I loved the way he ghosted into the box for the volley he hit wide. His movement was excellent all night. I don't really buy the "he was given loads of space" line either. He found space because he worked hard to find it. He was also pretty damn special when there wasn't much space to work with in the box. He was a breath of fresh air and we really need to see more of him.

It'd be harsh to change the team, and Rafa would know he'd be on to a hiding if he did and we lost, but then again, it'd just be like us to throw Lucas and Kuyt back in and win there, because we've won against them before with both in the side, so it's not impossible.

It's unfortunate we have to play Lille inbetween, because it gives Rafa another game to make changes around.

Pompey were shite though Neil, they didn't come here 'backs against the wall', they came here and looked like they were already down. They stood off us and allowed us space to play and run into. Big mistake.

forgot about the lille game. hopefully he plays this side again (well maybe not insua but who else is there?)

He was very, very good. I love the way he doesn't fuck about on the ball either..gives it and goes.

Lets hope he plays similarly against Lille on Thurs.

Agree with the last sentence, Mark.

Although I must point out Dirk was in tremendous from this time last year, but he certainly isn't at the moment. I don't think it's a lost cause if he does play - he is the man for the big goals after all - but you look at tonight's line up and think 'Who can you drop?'

Other than Insua, it should be nobody.

I think also that a lot of the space he found himself in was due to the fact we played with 5 attacking threats. Gerrard and Torres will always be the focus of the team and as such the focus of the opposition defenders, the whole point (and reason we have been screaming for it) of playing Babels and Aquilanis is that they have the ability to utilise the space they are afforded and as the game wears on and more attention is directed towards them it opens up space for the other two.

My point to Ryan the other night that i stand by is that with ONLY Torres and Gerrard as an attacking threat and a functional 9 behind them means the opposition only has to strangle those two players and we are done. With Babel, Maxi and Aquilani on the pitch there isnt a chance any team can stifle us totally for 90 minutes. The question then is can we take the chances we earn ourselves.

Actually I'm going to step in and defend Ryan for one moment after the battering he's took this evening for that ill-judged post.

He has argued recently that the way to unlocking defences, even ones as abject as Pompeys, is about the quick use of the ball, and not just sheer quick players. On the score he was spot on tonight, and it's precisely what Aquilani, Maxi, Gerrard, and even Babel at times, provided.
Am i the only the one who thought Maxi and Torres played better than Aquilani ?
Nope, I thought so too. Well it's marginal really, those three were the pick of the bunch, and then Babel. Maxi was instrumental in us playing the ball quicker with his movement on and off the ball.
But thats precisely the point Kuyt, Yossi, Lucas and Mascherano are not quick thinking players. They NEVER play a quick sharp direct ball. Not ever.
So play the players who can increase the tempo. We did. It showed. Job done.

Delighted to see Aquilani play well tonight. I'm very happy for him and I would really hope he can become a permanent fixture in our team from now until the end of the season and get back into the Italian squad for the WC.

I would throw in a cautious word about how poor the opposition were tonight. We worked hard to make space bit they were really, really shit.

We should play exactly the same team against Lille. If we beat them convincingly too, Rafa will look a bit of a twat if he drops anyone for the United game. But then again he is a twat, so...

I liked his passes into the channels, once his teamates twig onto what he's doing and bomb forward to get on them, we will be so much more of an attacking threat.
