WHILE Luis Suarez was grabbing the headlines at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday night, it would have been easy to overlook another pointer to Liverpool’s future.

As Kenny Dalglish’s side fought from a goal behind to win through to the last eight of the Carling Cup, there was one man missing from the heart of defence: Jamie Carragher.

Carragher, who started the match alongside Sebastian Coates at centre-back, had been substituted at half-time for Martin Skrtel.

Now, this is no claim of a direct correlation between Liverpool’s revival and Carragher being absent. After all, few players represent as much desire to succeed as the defender.

Nor is this signalling the death knell of Carragher’s glorious and decorated Anfield career that stands at a remarkable 679 games and still very much counting.

But, aged 34 this coming January, even the former England international accepts he is entering the twilight years of his career.

And given the plethora of centre-back options at Kenny Dalglish’s disposal, Carragher faces an increasingly strong challenge to his starting role.

Daniel Agger, left-back at Stoke, is again available, although given his injury-prone record that may not be for too long.

Skrtel has arguably been the most improved player in Liverpool’s squad since the January arrival of Dalglish and, perhaps most pertinently, Steve Clarke.

And while Coates was at fault for Stoke’s goal, the Uruguay international demonstrated with his reading of the game and ability to cope with an aerial battle that, even at the age of 20, he has a bright future ahead.

Carragher has never been the quickest centre-back, but what he lacks in pace he has more than made up for in positional play, intelligent organisation and guts.

However, more than 13 years at the top of his profession have inevitably taken their toll.

And the understandable intent not to get caught out by a nippy young forward means Carragher, and therefore Liverpool’s entire defence, has been dropping deeper than in recent years.

It’s impossible to say whether that has contributed to the failure to keep a clean sheet against 11 men this season, although Carragher was unfortunate to see individual errors punished earlier in the campaign.

But that, by definition, has allowed teams to progress ever nearer to Pepe Reina’s goal. Indeed, during the second half at Stoke, with Carragher missing the Liverpool defence kept a noticeably higher line.

Of course, Carragher has heard this criticism all before. He thrives on proving doubters wrong. This time last year, he was written off in some quarters but returned from injury to play an integral part for the incoming Dalglish.

However, it seems Bootle’s finest is now entering the same phase of his career experienced by another legendary Liverpool centre-back, Sami Hyypia.

Hyypia, after almost a decade at the heart of defence, eventually lost his regular first-team role at roughly the same age Carragher is now, but stayed on for another two seasons, still a formidable presence when called upon and an outstanding influence off the pitch.

Dalglish spoke only last month how Carragher, along with fellow homegrown talent Steven Gerrard, will remain at Liverpool for as long as they make a difference.

That will be for some time yet. However, Carragher’s central reservation has rarely been under as much threat.

Its a bit upsetting that we're linked to coloccini.

Hes good but not what we need. I'd take the time to develop coates and wilson

yeah i think he's a bit shit too meself, but i'd like to see him get more than a few fleeting goes to make 100% certain he's jarg

Coates looked good second half and he was commanding in the air throughout, he just looked a bit like a rabbit caught in the headlights in the first half. The good thing is he didn't buckle, and if Stoke targetted him after the mistake, it didn't work.

I agree, not disappearing up his own arse after the mistake shows good character for one so young.
I also agree with the article that we pressed higher up the pitch after carra went off but that could purely down to pressing for the equaliser, there is no denying we were better when compressed the play between the defense and strikers.

I thought the back four that finished the game looked impressive, a fair amount of pace and the ability to keep the ball.

wilson's only about 20 isn't he? carragher didn't play consistently at centre-half til he was 26!

It's completely natural, given his age, Carras playing days with us are numbered and will become more and more limited. He'll still have a big part to play this season but I expect it will diminish over time. He's been a cracking player and servant to the club though and has never given anything less than 100% every game and I , for one, salute that.

Back four for Saturday should be Kelly Skrtel Agger Enrique. Carrager deserves many plaudits for his years of service but he also deserves to be dropped and reminded that he his replaceable for his recent form. 'Individual errors' and 'hoofing for the sake of it' are the words that come to mind about Carragher this season.

He always seems to have a better second half to the season, doesn't he ?
[/quote]

Yeah, maybe that's an age thing aswell, same with Giggs, he always seems to have more of an impact in the latter half of the season, I guess that's just where experience tells.

there could be a number of reasons for the subbing at half time

1. kenny may have thought he was red card waiting to happen.
let's be honest here, carra was lucky to still be on the pitch, on second viewing of his challenge it's pretty bad

2. kenny was resting carra for the weekend game

3. kenny wanted a more mobile CB to push higher up the pitch as we searched for an equaliser.

It's definitely number three Neil.

We all know teams with quick centre backs score more goals.

Does anyone else find number three a bit presumptuous??! 😉

EDIT Argh, I quiffed there, I thought Neil was talking about in general.

not in general, just stoke.
personally it's always a good idea to hold a high line against stoke away, because of their aerial threat you need to push them as far away from your penalty box as possible.

I think he wanted to reduce the hoofing.

Joke aside I think he was in danger of getting red carded

carra was lucky to stay on the pitch, I think the ref was too far to see it properly. we definately got away with that one.

Indeed, it wasn't the best of challenges was it? I wondered who Carragher was mouthing off at when pulled up for the foul. If it was the linesman then he was even luckier to stay on the field.

He was kicking off about the pass wasn't he, it wasn't a great pass back and that's why he got caught.

Bummer.
