Spurs should have finished the game with 9 players. Pickford should have been sent off for conceding the penalty that he saved. The Brighton player who scored that screamer should have been off within the first 5 minutes. City's opener was laughably offside. And the first goal that we conceded today was as blatant a foul on the keeper as you're ever likely to see...

WTF is going on with referees? How is this brutal, game-changing ineptitude acceptable? It's not ok.

Results do tend to go both ways, both us & citeh have had the benefit of shite refereeing, the standard of officiating in this league is dreadful.

It feels in general there is way too much "well it would have all been ok if there was VAR" narrative around some basic errors the past month or so. Next season is going to be awful.

Yeah, we were on the bad end of both yesterday. Burnley's first goal was an obvious free kick, and Sturridge was offside for the 4th.

In general the officiating this season has been very very poor. Oliver is probably the only ref I feel comfortable with and know that he'll have a decent game.
The rest are shite.

Oliver is probably the only decent ref there is. Not excellent or anything. Just decent. That’s how poor they are.

I concur. The officiating has been a joke lately. I'll add Pogba escaping a yellow for filling Ramsey not to mention the penalty United were awarded in Paris while we weren't against Bayern.

Just look at the Bundesliga. What a mess they have at times.

A few years ago there at least seemed to be some clear and strong leadership of the referees, but that's faded badly in recent times (I don't even know who is in charge of them now). Aside from poor decisions, several of them are carrying quite a bit of timber and hardly look able to keep up with players who can move the ball from one end to the other in under ten seconds. That puts additional pressure on the linesmen, but some of those are atrocious, even though they're standing in line with the action. The whole group needs to be trained better, coached better and controlled better.

Arsenal got an absolute joke of a penalty as well.

Linos getting marginal offsides wrong has never surprised me. Unless you've got eyes like Marty Feldman that move independently it's impossible to see the moment the ball leaves the foot of the player passing forward AND the movement of the player receiving simultaneously.
But when they are over a yard offside like some of them it's just bizarre.

VAR can't come fast enough. I reckong the refs are getting their practice in now so that they will be VAR-ready (i.e. leave all the big decisions up to the VAR official).

What ? No he wasn't or at least it didn't look like it to me in the replays (Burnley player on the far side played him on). What did I miss ?

And better paid it has to be said.

If they simply made it 'must be clear daylight between them' (which falls in line with giving attackers the benefit of the doubt - something that rarely seems to happen nowadays even though that is the mantra) then poor offside decisions would be a rare thing.

Most in the Premier League are already on £70k a year. That's hardly so low that they can't be arsed to train properly.
True, but it's still a lot less than players at most levels.

I think there needs to be a clear pathway for players who don't make it professionally at a decent level to go into refereeing. They clearly know the rules, or most of them, they'll be physically fit & able to keep up with play & if the salary was similar to that of a lower league player it would be a viable alternative for them.

The issue is I, & probably many others, begrudge paying it to the fat oafs in charge now, but it has to be done at some point to encourage a greater standard in the long term imo.

The refs should have been on even higher payment. And they should rally spend a lot of time watching players they are going to referee coming weeks. The Equipment is there for them to learn how the most prolific players do it. And it is not just to prepare to slaughter them for diving, it is also to learn how they protect the ball and how often they don't get freekick when they deserve it.

Clubs should also invite refs to officiate and participate in trainign sessions if they plan to play 11x11. The clubs are the ones who gain from good refereeing and they should invest in good refs. Maybe each Club should have have 1 ref (not a named one) added to their payroll.

I think you'd have to reinvent the role to make that work. If people want refs to keep a very low profile and keep to the amount of actual games they currently do, I don't see where you'd get much more cash for them.I agree it would be good if some ex-players went into it, but the top players would surely never be interested, and most journeymen players, while possibly interested, would probably bring the same lack of drive and discipline that kept them journeymen players in the first place.

This already happens. Refs also use clubs training facilities on regular occasions.

Sometimes they stick the flag up if an eyelash is offside.
