We needed a striker.
Rafa put £18M and another £15M+ on a RB and injury prone midfielder.
He thought we could cope with Lucas and Mascher in the middle. Monumental mistake.
He'd just signed a contract when he got full control of the technical side of the club.
This is entirely his responsability if we are 7th in the table right now.
No one else's.

I had to take you of ignore to see what you were writing Le chac, but i do as a RCDNWer agree with you. Johnson was a fucking ridiculous idea, not that he isnt good going forward because he is but because generally i feel it was a poor use of obvioulsy limited funds. I suspect rafa got royally screwed over when it came to spending the Alonso sale funds ( another fucking tragedy) but nonetheless, weve obviously needed another decent forward for fucking ages, selling an able right back for peanuts and buying in a flawed defender expensively was a major mistake IMO. The main damage done was not only to the on pitch personell but to the players minds, they petulantly sulked their way into the season and it just got worse and worse. Lucas's atrocious performance against Villa in the opening weeks just confirmed to everyone what a disaster the summer was and we just knew in game 2 we were gonna win fuck all. The fact that Lucas was one of our best players the other day was pleasing, limited and shit though he is at least hes fucking trying. Maybe they are gonna snap out of it and start playing but its too late now for it to be considered anything other than a fuck up of a season, Rafa gambled and he lost.

I still blame the owners for putting him in the position were he needed to gamble , but still, we didnt need to spunk 20M on a right back who cant defend and thats purely rafas fault.
You were still ignoring me haha
Good post Molby. You blame the yanks, I blame Rafa.
These are just opinions.

Johnson was signed because he is English and we need them for the CL, Arbeloa was leaving

the yanks didnt make any money available in the summer, we spent what we received for Alonso/Leto. They should have made 10-15m available and bought a striker like Negredo or someone but they didnt.

These deals weren't available in the summer and we wont be doing them unless we get Voronin, Dossena etc off the wage bill to make space.

I guess because Rafa, having just achieved 2nd, thought we can still get into the top four without bringing more players in.

So you thought Rafa told the owners he didnt want any money to bring players in?!

Yeah. If so it would be the first time in the Premierships history that a manager had done that. Nearly as deluded as Gooners believing that Wenger has been choosing not to spend money.

The owners decided that improving the contracts of current players should be counted as new signings, and counted as transfer budget. Or that's how I read it.

You're an idiot Le Chacal

What makes me more of an idiot to think like this?
Yeah I think Rafa thought we could cope with that squad.
Talk about football and keep your insults for your mates.

I don't think Rafa thought he could cope Lech, he was putting a brave face on things - something the players certainly haven't done since last season.

I blame Rafa for the fact that we ended up with thread-bare squad.

I blame the owners for deciding that Rafa was the man to take the club forward and then denying him the chance to rectify his own mistakes.

Err no he didn't.

He needed a right back because Degen was perma injured and Arbeloa went back to Spain. He went for a FB who is rated as the best Englishman in the position. He paid £10m out of his kitty as we allowed Pompey not to pay us back the money remaining on the Crouch fee.

As for Aquliani, its widely accepted that he paid £5m as a down payment . I know its your birthday but try not lie to continue your crusade against the manger eh.

I never suggested that John.
He had money, he spent it how he wanted to.
Keni: I blame the yanks giving him such a contract that puts us in a situation where its impossible to sack him.
I said at the time it was a mistake on both football and business perspective.

You're looking at it from the perspective of someone who doesn't like the manager though.

Look at it from the owners perspective. They wanted the manager and gave him a contract to reflect that. To then deny him proper funds to rectify past mistakes and equip the team properly for the coming season was extremely poor judgement.

You are continuing to ignore what I've said above because of your own prejudices and that is undermining your argument as a whole.

Clubs very rarely pay fees in one shot. They still pay the whole fee over 2-3 years.
We're gonna pay Pompey £18M plus 20M Euros to Roma. Crouch money or not, Im not an accounting specialist but it doesnt make any difference.
There is no crusade against the manager. He got a very good contract with full controll.
He has to take his responsabilities. He's the manager, he takes the blame or praise.

That is correct Spion, unless we can keep the first team injury free, which we won't.
It's not like we have been playing well and not getting the results in the last few months, we have been dire.
Our strength in depth , or lack of it is the underlying problem.
If we had lost to Villa, I think that would have been almost the last nail in the coffin, and no one can say we looked convincing there. One brilliant piece of finishing kept us in it, and if we are to stnd any hope, we can't leave it to chance like that.
My opinion is not purely because of the position we are in now, I said right at the start of this, when we failed to bring in a striker, that I was worried about fourth place.
Hopefully we can bring some players in that have quality, even if their better days are behind them.
As I see it January is our last chance

The owners are part of an overall management team.

I actually find it incredibly bizarre that you're so reluctant to place any real sort of blame at the owners doors.

1. They give a long and lucrative contract to a manager you don't rate.

You've already said you view this as a mistake.

2. They fail to back their own manager to the level required.

This increases the damage made by mistake #1 by several orders of magnitude and is by the worst decision of the two.

Basically, by your reckoning, they should have not given him the contract so that they could then sack him now. What would that have achieved exactly? Other than to leave us managerless with a demoralized squad in the most competitive race for 4th in the history of the Prem?

Your argument is fundamentally flawed on a number of levels.

I don't disagree Avvy. But if he takes the blame for the losses then he takes the praise for the wins. That's what Lech said isn't it? So where was the praise for the win against Villa? We went to a side on form and having the best defensive record in the prem. Not many expected a result and we got it. If Utd had done that, it would have been "the mark of champions". We do it and its "fucking lucky Rafa". That's the two extremes of the bollocks right there.
I'm pigeon holed as RCDNW'er and the plain fact is, I'm not. I just can't stand the idiots who refuse to believe Benitez offers us anything.

I am not being down on the team , I am being realistic. The team is OK when fit and played in the right positions, the squad is too thin, and we don't have a plan B for whem Torres is out.
Our problem is not us particularly, but three teams have shown significant improvement when we are working hard to stay still.

My opinion is not purely because of the position we are in now, I said right at the start of this, when we failed to bring in a striker, that I was worried about fourth place.
Hopefully we can bring some players in that have quality, even if their better days are behind them.
As I see it January is our last chance

Are you starting to get the bad karma yet Spion?
It's not me being a dreary old pessimist, we really are this shit, and we need some new blood desperately.

I am the bearer of even further good news. You will love this even more FFF.

LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez has ruled out a move for Ruud van Nistelrooy and insisted Ryan Babel is staying put.

The Merseysiders have been credited with an interest in the Real Madrid striker while fellow Dutchman Babel has spoken about his desire to quit Anfield.

However, after being forced to replay with Reading in the FA Cup, Benitez stressed that, although talks are progressing well on other fronts, the January window will not map out as some had envisaged.

"I don't want to talk about individual players or names, but we are not trying for Ruud van Nistelrooy, so that will be very difficult to bring him in!" stated the Liverpool manager.

"We are working hard on getting some players in, and have had some good talks but my priority now is talking about good things with my players.

"And we are not trying to sell Ryan Babel either. Today we were thinking about using him but I wanted to play players who are focused. He has to work harder to get in the team and play if he wants to go to the World Cup.

"He will have a chance and work hard for Liverpool."

Weird. Ballague is right then?

I don't get the plan for Babel (but then I never have). If we're not going to use him - and we never do - surely it'd be better to send him elsewhere... on loan if needs be. It's our interest that he gets game *somewhere* and hopefully goes to the World Cup because it's clear that his long-term future is not at Anfield and at this point our main concern has to be what sort of money we can recoup.
