The slow decline of Daniel Sturridge

He's certainly not a massive worker but he's not regularly lazy either. I've never understood his lack of appreciation from the majority of match going reds. He's never really been embraced which given the amount of goals he's scored is a bit strange.

Great post from Ryan though. Does he now lack the pace to run in behind or is it pure mental? Is anyone confident he'll get back to where he was or are them days finished?

I suspect it's a bit of both. Time waits for no player and that's bound to have an effect, but it would be minimised if the Studge's confidence were high. He's still easily talented enough to do well, but I suspect he'll have to try and modify his game and I'm not sure whether or not he really can. In games in which he's covered a lot of ground for the team, his edge and that of the team as an attacking unit have both seemed blunted.

Is his decline even that slow? Today was another nail in the coffin for me. Harsh perhaps but he really offered nothing for the AMs to aim for and sat way to deep to even make the Swansea defense think twice about his presence.
Ryan's original post sums it up well for me, but I thinks its actually remarkable how quickly its becoming apparent that he doesn't have what we need.

We've been discussing Sturridge's decline for soooooo long now, and there's still no real consensus.

And I'm not talking about his workrate, or injury record or suitability for a Klopp team. I'm talking about his actual pace and acceleration.

If that has diminished badly, then regardless of his natural talent and skill, he should be sold.

I can't remember the last time I saw Sturridge sprint in a game. Either he doesn't trust his body to not break down if he pushes it or he is trying but the pace has gone. Whatever the reason is it's not ideal.

We can help if it's the former. If it's the latter, see you later Daniel.

Lets Hope he is just confused regarding the scope of work related to Klopps football. I still Hope inside every time he enter the pitch that he is going to set us on fire, but its been a few months without any direct impact. He will be here until summer at least so lets hope for some magic moments before not too long.

I wonder whether he'd have more joy with a strike partner in a slightly more traditional 4-4-2 style formation as he'd have more licence to roam and help with the grunt work.

I like 4-4-2 particularly when a team loses its way , everyone knows what their role and more importantly, what everyone else's role is

I think he’s mirroring Robbie Fowler in fact

I only wish he was half the finisher Robbie was ... He's missing chances Robbie was scoring when his pace was about 50% of what yours is now (his homecoming under Rafa).

The last few months will cost us 10+ million unfortunately as he's just not there mentally as much as physically (frustration, lack of confidence, game time etc)*

* if this jinx doesn't work, nothing will.

Never thought the day would come but I want him sold, he is too slow, he's lazy, he drops too deep (You're a ST for fuck sake! Stop dropping to play CDM). He's unbelievably frustrating to watch. Anyone comes in with a £20mill + bid, should sell immediately.

I'm going to go out on a limb and so he's (very) slowly getting better, at least he was getting in scoring positions last night. If he starts on Saturday he scores two.

I'll wait for this to be quoted, probably negatively, on Saturday afternoon.

when fowler came back for the second time, he still knew where the back of the net. Whilst Studge is missing sitters. Needs a goal asap. Would play him against wolves in the fa cup

I don't think that it's outrageous to suggest, given the lack of consistent football Sturridge has played over the last few years, that he's horribly out of form and extremely short in confidence.

He definitely is slower - but more importantly he just seems not to trust himself - that instinctive eye for finishing just isn't there.

I guess, the unfortunate thing is - the only way you get that back is by playing through it till it comes back.

I don't know why we need to discuss this - as in the first case it is quite sad in itself. It is almost as if none of us believe the evidence of our own eyes - this season we have seen him just spectacularly degrade as both an athlete and football player that he was. He is slower when running towards goal (seems to be faster when running away from it) - is definitely NOT challenging for the ball at all and lacks in confidence to do so given the injury breaks he has had. As for his misses yesterday - it is not as if he has never missed a chance and besides they were not easy chances despite what some may think. He had no time on the ball so a snap reaction was all he could do, and therefore given that he is not in the class of Fowler/Owen in such situations it was always 50-50.

We should sell on the first offer we get - there is actually no point in keeping him for this season. It is less of a headache and the youngsters could be tested out in place of him.
