I think from all the names we've been linked with, profile and value wise it'd be either Gravenburch or Alvaraz for me.

Ajax would probably be more likely to negotiate a sale and we need to get moving really......

Frankly it feels like there isn't going to be a standout, obvious candidate at a reasonable price. We're talking about players who have never played in Europe, a relegated kid with a half decent season under his belt, or a player a year younger than Fabinho.

I still think Thuram looks like he could be a monster as a six, but I accept it's not based on much. I've always been disappointed the links to him died away.

TBH that's an assumption. And as it wasn't just him, but the whole team, my personal assumption is that last year was a reaction to the 21/22 season, the WC, and the lack of a proper mid-summer break. Some of his best performances of last season were actually in the last dozen games so maybe he's getting back to where he was. We won't find out now however.
We can speculate about the impact of the 21/22 season, or whether last season's performances were an anomaly or the beginning of his decline. But I think it's telling that Fabinho's keen on this deal. All of the players moving to Saudi Arabia (with the exception of Neves) are players who are in the twilight years of their careers. These are players looking to wind down and pick up a pretty penny before they retire from the game. I don't think a Fabinho at the top of his game would be ready to down tools at this point. He'd want to be competing at the highest level and winning trophies while he was capable. The fact that he's happy to go and play token football for massive piles of cash can be taken as a tacit confirmation of his decline.

Yes, of course I’m over simplifying and focusing on one aspect of a multi layered web of assumptions that could be relevant to his shitshow of a season - not least the other factors you’ve mentioned.

It’s more anecdotal and subjective, but as someone who used to do a lot of coast path running / ultra marathons etc it’s folk wisdom (and relevant to lived experience) that you have to manage the miles in your legs in planning a season of races and a training schedule. Over time, your legs - in addition to natural ageing - feel the miles in them and you cast envious glances at others who haven’t yet accumulated the miles in your legs.

It relates too to the psychology of being in a state of high alert / high focus etc. Over time, working 1:1 in acute mental health, there’s a dog eared tiredness that accumulates alongside all the benefits of embodied knowing. I imagine players accumulate psychological mileage in the same way too. Again, subjective and anecdotal, but in my field that often carries a more meaningful practical air than objective view points.

Or just that money talks. 29/30 is often considered the prime age for a defender, experience without a massive drop off. We are all speculating.

He's had some great times at Liverpool and we're not going to be in the conversation next season (PL + CL) so in that scenario I'd be taking the money too - regardless of whether there was any physical deterioration or not.

Cheikh Doucoure of Palace named the latest player linked, by Pete O'Rourke.

Was voted their POTY last season.

They did a decent job of shutting us out for the most part in both games last season, could be an interesting one.

Truth be told I've no idea who they are. 23 though, so fits the age profile

Douglas Luis is a decent shout, alongside Koopmeiners! He is Brazilian too as a bonus. Ignore the contents of the tweet. The Luis kid is not available for €20m. I only shared his tweet for the pics

Feel the same, Thuram seems like the one but I have to admit, just on a hunch rather than seen him much.
But some of the alternatives on this thread feel like zero sum game. I guess we probably save a little in wages and maybe 1-2 yrs younger but unconvinced by their pedigree

Andre is our Florentino.

Stop fucking about now LFC and find the new star, skip these clubs from Portugal that hold you for ransom and fucking use the resources we have
at the club to fucking put in some work.

That is....to say the least....the most coincidental thing I think I've ever seen unless it's completely false and someone's made it up as a poor troll attempt.

So the plane picked up Thuram from Nice, flew to Blackpool to pick up one of our physios who missed the flight on Saturday, popped down to Southampton to pick up Lavia, then whizzed across to our training base at Stuttgart?

At Stuttgart the physio was dropped off and Thiago picked up, it then went to Frankfurt to let the lads do a bit of shopping & then onwards to Barcelona to drop Thuram, Lavia and Thiago to the Nou Camp.

Can't say I noticed him at all, but i can't imagine Palace letting him go for less than £50m.

Mats Weiffer at £25m is cheap good alternative - 2nd best in Eredivisie after Alvarez. They have sent the Journos all over place, misdirecting them - we probably end up with someone I mentioned 2 windows ago.

They can fuck off if they ask for £50 mill.

He's Palace's Player of the Year for 22/23.

Not Eze, not Olise, not Guehi. Palace had the 4th lowest expected goals conceded in the League.

Very talented player. Wouldnt mind signing him for the right fee
