The race

Yes, today wasn't a great day. Felt like a loss. Dropped 2 points while all three teams below us won.

7 points ahead still and we need to get back to winning ways.

It was never done and dusted despite what was being said in the media.

I have a horrible feeling that those cunts will be out to do whatever it takes to injure the rest of our players.

Such a cliche but definitely true : there are going to be lots of twists and turns. And how many points we are ahead is likely to decrease and increase due to the varying schedules, it was never going to be one way, but the most important is that we keep playing as well as, or better, than we have in the first half of the season. There will always be freak results (see both Barca and Real losing this past week).

Liverpool : on paper we only have a couple of tough games (Spurs A, Forest A) until February. We should be able to stay 6-7 points ahead.

City : have a couple of dodgy fixtures but until they play Chelsea at the end of January they'll likely claw back some points.

Chelsea : have a similar level of fixtures as ourselves but Spurs (A) and City (A) are tough games.

Arsenal : have too many 'toughish' fixtures to get through unscathed (IMO) so I'd be surprised if by the end of January we have not stretched that lead a little over them (say back to 9 points).

Saturday will be pain though. Just fucking pain. Everton are shit, but it will be the last derby at Goodison and the crowd and Everton players will be well up for it. Shame we dont have Konate for this as Gomez is a step down in both defending and the physical side of the game.

Its a must win though. Both City and Arsenal will win their games. Chelsea might drop points.

I don't think Gomez will start vs. Everton. Between him and Q. for RCB but Q is better in the air so I'd give him the nod because there'll be a barrage. Especially after yesterday's Jomez shit show.

I think we've had a fair few games this season where we've been pretty sketchy and somehow wound up winning. I remember thinking a bunch of times - I can't quite work out if this team is actually good or not. So in some ways, yesterday was to be expected - our luck had to run out at some point.

But having said all that, it still felt avoidable and that's what so annoying. I feel like one of the reasons we've only won one title in the last 30 years - aside from being nowhere near good enough for most of them - is that we get into good positions and then have to suffer through poor decision making and watch our chances slip through our fingers.

We could've rotated last night and still dropped points, we'll never know, but now we've dropped points and our midfield is knackered.

I dont think we’re knackered. We stepped up in the second half and outplayed them for parts of the half. A tired team doesnt do that.

I think it was more a result of us playing two massive games on the trot mentally and Newcastle being very aggressive from the start.
The make shift back four didnt help.

This has the potential to become Slots most challenging period. To avoid that I think we need Quansah to come back into CB and find some form and Gomez goes back to being Mr Utility.

Slot should consider staring to rotate in the CL. We've got such a strong position now that maintaining a points gap in the PL should take priority. He needs to trust and use Endo more, even just seeing games out. He also needs to get something from Elliott. On his day he can be out just impactful midfielder

Trent needs to keep fit and maintain his new found sharpness in defending. If he does then the horror show we saw down the right against Newcastle shouldn't be seen again.

If you want to be glass half full then Jota, Elliott and Endo have got plenty left in the legs for the second half of the season, and Chiesa is the wild card.

We shouldn't forget how prolific Jota us compared to all forwards bar Salah. We've done very well without him, but our finishing will go up a gear when he returns, no doubt. It blows my mind that the football world kinda just forgets what a sizeable loss he is.

It'll go up a year a half a dozen matches after he returns. He's a slow starter after significant time off.

There is still 2/3 of the season to be played... Talk of the title race and 'must win' games would be premature if this was early February, never mind now. All teams will have lots of ups and downs before we start to have 'must-wins', and no matter what happens on Saturday, we're at least 4 points clear at the top, come Sunday.

I'm never expect anything good, when we go to that shithole, but this team has hardly let us down too often this season, when it comes to character, have they? I have a feeling we'll have shut those miserable blue cnuts up, by full time. I do fear the repeated assault on our player, though - THAT could fuck up our season, just like four years ago. I can absolutely see that hachet-man manager sending these pigs out to cripple Mo and Virg again.

Christ, I despise these nothing wankers. This game is always horrible.

I believe that Arsenal,Chelsea,City,Spur etc will all drop points, that encludes us. Such it the league this season.
The last ten games of the season, when teams near the bottom get into are looking to avoid the drop the start to deploy "The Bus" and these games become harder to get the 3points from...
There is still plenty of football to go

Next three PL fixtures for the other two:

Arsenal:
H v Ipswich
A v Brentford
A v Brighton

Chelsea:
H v Fulham
A v Ipswich
A v Palace

Tricky games for Arsenal especially without Saka.
Chelsea should get 9 points.

If you want a stat to keep us grounded, of all the teams top Christmas, Liverpool, by a country mile, are the worst at converting it to a title win.

Exactly half the time - in 16 seasons out of 32 - the team top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day goes on to win the title.

Liverpool's record though is much, much worse than that.

This is the seventh time the Reds have stood first on 25 December - but their only success since the top-flight's 1992 rebrand was in 2019-20.

Liverpool have been in this position more than anyone else in English football history - 21 times, winning 11 of the previous 20.

Of the 6 times we have been table toppers at Xmas in the prem era, we only went to win it once. The club must invest in defence. If your racing an F1 car, the lighter fuel load may get you to the front but unless you refill, you will run out of fuel before the end. In the summer I did not moan too much about signings, saying getting Trent, VVD and Salah sorted was more important but now we need to address the chinks in the armour.
If Grav gets injured can Endo step in? We know we are decidedly more frail without Konate at the back. I dare say, if he was playing, we'd have 4 extra points.
Robbo remains prone to brain farts, and we need better. Seeing how well Bournemouth are doing, going from a yoyo club to become a mid table club much of it down to Hughes signings, I have to concede he does get them right. I will still call him a lazy ass until he gets some resolution on VVD, Salah and Trent

You and I both read the same article i guess ie BBC Sport?

Whilst the high level data may show we aren’t successful in converting Crimbo leads into titles there are many other factors to consider.

How many points did we end up on when leading on Christmas Day since Klopp took over? We had seasons which would’ve won the league in any other season. We won’t need to do that this year.

We were first on Christmas in 1996, 2008, 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Only in 1996 and 2013 did we genuinely blew it in my opinion. In 2008, we were on top but not by much and United had games in hand. I believe it was the same in 2018 with City close to us and games in hand. In 2020, we had an injury crisis in defense.

We can thank City for half of those. No City this season. They are done thank God.

If I remember correctly we weren’t even tip on NYD in 2008/9. We lost to City and Chelsea I think and our 6 pt lead was gone?
