The Race for 4th

There are too many assumptions in the whole thing. Sixth would be significant progress given the summer transfer window debacle.
If we had signed Sturridge then we could very well be sitting third or fourth now.
It's not impossible and as Jimmy says it's our job to be optimistic.

regards

I'd take sixth right now. I think seeing some progress as a team was all I hoped for this season. Sturridge is making a difference already though we look much more potent up front.

The City and Arsenal matches will tell us where we are as a side. If - IF - we can pick up four points from those fixtures then I think there's a real chance we could well be close to fourth at the end of the season.

I wouldn't rule anything out at this stage.

I think we've got very chance, our form is improving a little

I honestly think if we can bring in a high profile signing this window i.e sneijder it will give the team a massive boost for fourth!

That said, if he's demanding outrageous wages then its probably best that one goes a miss.

Coutinho also looks a good prospect, 20 years of age, has incredible skill and vision and could develop well under us if given loads of game time.

I just want us to take one game at the time. If we dont turn up against Arsenal we'll get our arse handed to us.
Then we can worry about City.

It's pretty unlikely having read red stars analysis - we should know in three weeks or so if we should all become dream believers or delinquents.

Currently :

Spurs 41/23
Everton 37/22
Arsenal 34/22
Liverpool 34/23

If you have 10 mins try the BBC prediction table ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_prem/predictor/default.stm), just inputting the results for those 4 teams, to see what you predict the final standings will be, for me it was :

Liverpool 73 (we are hitting form and now have a potent front-line)
Arsenal 66 (very inconsistent)
Spurs 66 (fallible against any team away from home)
Everton 65 (have been riding a wave - tough matches to come).

I think there just may be a tiny smidgeon of bias / wishful thinking in that because in my world we don't lose another game, drawing at Arsenal and City, and win all our home games bar Chelsea (1-1) !

However even allowing for some of those predictions to go awry it does show that there remains the potential for us to achieve 4th. For that to happen then Everton will lose all their matches against the Top 6 teams, Spurs will perform poorly away from home and Arsenal will not beat any of the Top 4. I can dream can't I ?

To be fair he did say it was wishful thinking.

I really can't see Spurs dropping enough points for us to catch them so we'll finish 5th max.

Mate if you think we'll finish on 73 points you're truly and utterly deluded. Not a fucking chance. Get real ffs.

Read the post again. Then take a look at the fixture lists Peter.

On form (and I've given us a draw at both City and Arsenal) then that should be acheiveable - however we all know there will be an upset or two somewhere along the line. I do believe that the BR tactics are starting to ingrain themselves into the team and that we are now playing better football than Arse/Spurs/Everton and that this can enable us to close that gap and possibly even allow us to overhaul all three of them.

if we win our home match against them then it's actually just a 4 point deficit to overcome.

Even so they are a better team and in good form at the moment. Of course it's possible but very unlikely. If the gap hasn't grown after the next two matches then there might be a slight chance.

73 points would entail us finding title winning form (pro rata of about 95 pts over a season!!!).

That, or anything close to it, is not. Going. To. Happen.

4th is not going to happen.

This is a team that has only managed 9 wins out of 23 games so far. We're all hoping for improvement but you don't go from such indifferent form to near enough title winning form off the back of one signing unless that signing is Messi / Ronaldo.

I don't think it's achievable either although it would be nice to see a reverse of last season where we saw a decent first half and awful second half of the season. You just never know in football....once can but hope.

True. I'd love to be wrong... but it kinda feels like hoping for money to fall out of the sky. Pointless.

had us losing to arsenal and chelsea. drawing with city, swansea, spurs and everton. Winning against wba, wigan, southampton, villa, west ham, reading, newcastle, fulham and qpr. I thought i was being generous with that top be honest. So don't know how he got 73 points.

Oh absolutely. You still do it though don't you ? Hope that is. You're head is screaming "dont be so fucking stupid you moron" at you whilst your heart is whispering "well, you just never know"..

I think 73 is 13 wins and 2 draws from 15 games. As I said, barmy.

Hope is always pointless as it never has any impact on anything and all it does it make for disappointment.

But hope is surely part of football isn't it? I'd rather be disappointed at season end than go "knew we wouldn't make it". I'd rather be on the roller coaster for 4 months than expect the worse.

Optimistic but somewhat realistic might be 9 wins, 3 defeats, and 3 draws. That's 30 points to leave us on 64 points, and that probably won't be enough.

I'm all for a bit of optimism, but within reason!

Every footy fan has a bit of hope though surely ? I mean we've been through a bit as Liverpool fans over the last few years but we've had the odd bit of cup success to give us little lift now and again. You wonder how fans of lesser teams get on sometimes - you have to give them some credit for sticking with a team you pretty much never win anything in a lifetime

And as I said in the original post (it really is difficult to demonstrate in text), read it with more than a touch of sarcasm, instead of running around screaming & waving your hands in the air as if aliens had landed :

Sturridge and Suarez will get us challenging for a top 4 spot but our consistency will let us down. Lets see who else is brought in during the January window. I think that its a bridge too far but this is football and you just never know.
