The Ox

He's a remarkably good sport - early on, when fans were queuing up to dismiss him as an utter waste of money, he agreed to go in disguise in the club shop and ask people what they thought of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (a bizarrely cruel and stupid stunt by LFCTV, but he did it very well).

I think, like I said before, that Klopp can make him a better player, and he's clearly working hard to improve. And yesterday in the post match interview, as others have noted above, he showed great maturity and good sense.

Jesus, how dense are LFC TV, that could have spectacularly backfired.

This place is laughable at times, from a complete perspective waste of money to the next captain in a couple of weeks.

He's showing promise which for 40m you would hope for a bit more than that.

He's got a long long way to go to prove it was a goof decision to buy him.

A couple of tackles, crosses and a good interview doesn't change that

He was bought as a squad player and he's proving himself as a good squad player, completely agree that the captain shouts are laughable though.

Now look. I've had to like a Dreamy post, for being sensible and correct

And to be fair to Red Ninja he did mention continue to grow and improve, and in a few years be considered captain material.

I wouldn't say he's even proven that yet. I'd say he's proven that he has the potential to not be a complete flop but that's about it.

He's had some shocking displays and a couple of good ones.

Too early to say he's a good squad player yet for me.

The captain needs to be almost ever present, I doubt Ox will ever command such a role and if he does it will either mean we are in deep shit or he's improved his consistency and ability no end.

I doubt it will ever happen.

Henderson has commanded a permanent role and I am not sure he has an infinitely higher ceiling than AOC. If at all. And we haven't been in deep shit while this has been the case.

Forget any captain claims, the biggest joke was that opening thread about the player. It was laughably premature and all-too typical of knee-jerk jerks.

Saying that I was surprised he wasn't injured and he showed commitment and work rate, is a "knee-jerk" reaction is it?

Initially many people saw him as redundant – as basically more of the same to what we already have, which in combination with the price tag and injury history made a lot of people doubt the wisdom of this purchase. Well, after the first few months I can say that what makes the most happy about Ox at the moment is that he brought a different quality to this team, something that was in short supply at times: that bit of grit and aggression in midfield, combined with pace, technique and physicality.

When he's playing on the wing, you know it will be tough for the opposition to attack through that wing because he will always use his pace to get back and fight and claw for the ball. In midfield, he adds a bit of unpredictability, perhaps losing the ball more frequently and cheaply than Phil or Gini, but then immediately springing into tackles to win it back – when successful this often leaves the opposition with distorted defensive shape which we then can exploit. I mean it as a compliment to say that he gives us a bit of a "Momo Sissoko" effect – a player who thrives on chaos and individual duels and drives up the tempo of the game, forcing his teammates to try to match his energy and aggression. Basically Ox is a player who pushes Klopp's team of creative artists more into proper "heavy metal" territory.

Henderson hasn't deserved the captains arm band this year, he did after 13/14.

AOC has had 'potential' for 5 years.

He needs to show consistency and improve his end product.

I think that's a hell of a presumption after one good game against Bournemouth. Ox has always had talent but lacked application and has a horrendous injury record. Most players can do it as a one off, but lets see how he gets on for the rest of the season. Plus with lallana back he's going to have problems even getting into the team.

Not one game. He's looked good to very good every time he's taken to the pitch over the past 6-8 games. Agree with Rurik's assessment. Grit, skill, reliable and intelligent play. Looks like a good binding agent.

Saying that there were some knee jerk reactions isn't necessarily that same as saying you had a knee jerk reaction, is it?

I think quite a lot of negative opinions were based on the six years he spent at Arsenal doing fuck all, which was fair enough and entirely reasonable

I guess some haven't taught, or been taught. There's nothing to be smug about by concluding that a player who has regressed under one coach will definitely not progress under another. It's not really the massively rational judgement that some have convinced themselves it is. Thank god they haven't been on the receiving end of such dogmatic cynicism.
