The Olympics

When we put the initial bid in it claimed the whole thing would cost the tax player £2bln, that has now gone up to £12bln. Although some say the true cost will be £24bln as none of the above costs take into account things like extra police costs and other civil servants working on the Olympics.

I live in Bucks and work for the local authority here and as part of my role I cover Dorney, where the rowing will be, I know how much time my colleagies and I have had to spend attending meetings for it, and it's one event. I can't imagine how much officer time has been spent on such meetings around the main sites.

Meanwhile the Olympic 'legacy' is supposed to be around engaging more young people in sport, again I work with people who were running projects funded by sports organisations like Sport England, many of those grassroots grants have been cut to help to fund the Olympics.

The cost of the opening ceremony is said to be £40million alone.

Meanwhile we're being told 'times are tough', 'we're in this together' etc

Oh but don't worry, our £24bln outlay will see us make an estimated £2bln from tourism and trade from the Olympics

Go on, someone convince me the Olympics are a good idea?
