like I said, I felt sorry for insua because he MUST have seen the player who was litterally yards offside out of the corner of his eyes. so bascially we asking our defenders to hold a perfect line and ignore the opposition. that's easier said than done.

Heh, if you're playing the offside trap and you see an attacker offside, you should drop back so as to play him onside?

no, I bet his thinking was the attacker was behind him (in an offside position) so there is no need to push up with everyone else.

I don't know what you mean any more, but either way - he thought wrong.

you don't know what I mean? okay, say you are insua the opposition have the ball, you look over and you can clearly see the oppositon have an attacker MILES offside. you then look ahead to see two of your center backs are holding a line about 3 yards ahead of you, alright you SHOULD push up to meet them but you can clearly see a player in an offside position, so way bother?

Because you should trust that your teammates can see more than you

Disagree. The offside rule does not need changing - maybe some of you are just too young to remember the bollocks that went on before. Fucking great goals disallowed because the winger, 40 yds away had strayed 1 foot in front.

It was Insua who fucked up - plain and simple and no amount of bitching will change that. One assumes he knows the rule as a professional footballer and he shoudl have been in line with his team-mates. He had probably his worst game for us last night.
[/quote]

Totally agree, it would be a dark day for football if that rule is changed. Why change the rule to suit defenders. I think its a great rule.

So Rafa is reviewing the tapes with Insua and asks him why he decided to stay back, his answer is "meh, the guy was offside, so I thought... why bother?".

The job of a defence is to stay in line regardless of any offside rule.

It sounds as if Insua was just being lazy or unaware.

Well if he was then he has no future at LFC.
