Tony Barrett saying on twitter that it's true that we made an offer for Coutinho.

Edit: The Guardian running the same story now.

I'd much rather have Coutinho than Ince.

Hence my mirth at the highlighted section, above.

"What ? We can't get Ince ?

Aah, fuck it then....that Coutinho fella will have to do I suppose".

I hadn't seen him until that clip, but I'd have some of what he's selling, all day long yes I would !

I haven't seen much of him, but he is considered to be the best of Brazil's next generation alongwith Neymar and Douglas Costa.

Interestingly, all have them have flattered to deceive to an extent. Neymar's still stuck in Brazil, Costa has been lost in the wilderness now, and Coutinho has barely pulled any trees at Inter.

Outrageously talented, but 8 million seems high for someone who's barely done anything yet. I'm surprised Inter would even reject it; he's been there 2 years and barely played for them.

I always liked Coutihno whenever I've seen him play; he is a good dibbler and a smart player. He didn't quite crack the starting 11 at Inter, but let's remember he is only 20 years old now. Kaka was 21 when Milan signed him and he became an instant hit. Oscar is almost a year older and he is not playing regularly for Chelsea in the Premier League, even though he's been brilliant in the Champions League. Even Christiano Ronaldo at 20 was not a regular starter for Man U. So it's not really fair to judge Coutinho on "doing nothing" at Inter so far. Some players break out before they are 20, but most players, even some of the most talented ones, only really find their game at 21, 22, 23 years old.

I am not at all surprised Inter rejected our offer. They would be stupid to let him go now, just when their investment is probably about to pay off.

Yet, he has played just 10 games all season for Inter, with 1 goal to show for it.

I've said he's a fantastic talent, and I'd prefer him over Ince. But 8 million for someone who's barely played any football (other than his short loan spell at Espanyol) seems a most excellent offer IMO. Judging by his appearances record, Inter don't seem to have too much time for him, so I'm not sure how they think their investment is going to pay off. I barely watch Serie A so I'd be happy to be corrected.

Coutinho looks like a good prospect. But he definately doesnt add any steel to our midfield. So we are in many ways adding to the position we expected Joa Allen to excell in? Should we then let Allen continue to play deeper where he doesn't fit in? Same goes for Sneijder. If the plan is to get something out of Allen (which I am not convinced we will do anyway) why would we add players to the position he might play well in?

I think Coutinho is more of an attacking player than a CM, so I don't think him and Allen would compete for one position. His most direct competition and closest player we have in terms of playing style is, of course, Suso.

One thing I will say against the idea of purchasing Coutinho is that I think a transition to a new team and a new league will add at least another season to his "development phase." He has a better chance to "break out" at Inter or at least at another club in Italy. Changing the leagues might not be the smartest move for him now.

i watched him play for either the U21 or U17 Brazil team in some tournament or other a few years ago and he stood out alongside Neymar. He is a beautiful footballer. Id LOVE to get him. Hes better than Oscar.

It would seem unlikely that we're trying to buy two of Inters players, does it not?

Different positions but still.

Well Coutinho would be a pretty exciting signing, if nothing else, probably the most exciting since Suarez, although that's not saying that much I suppose.

Well he never got much of a chance in fairness
He did have a few opportunities, very few to be fair, but he didn't impress when he was given them. It think the bigger problem was when he went on loan to the championship and still looked poor, especially at Blackpool.

He'll probably come good in a few years.

It was obvious even at the time that Wilson would've been better served staying at Rangers on loan for the time being. He was getting games for them in the CL and had no prospect of starting for us - we managed the whole thing really badly.

yeah, best of luck to him. still only 22

If we were to sign Coutinho, then we could play a front 3 of him, Suarez, and Sturridge, with Lucas (or Allen), Henderson, and Gerrard behind.

I'm sorry, but that is a quality front 6. Not title-winning standard, but way fucking better than our current levels of performance - there'd be no more excuses for Rodgers if he couldn't get that producing after an initial bedding in period.

Potentially title winning in a few years if they all develop as expected.

They won't, but they all have the talent

He played in Europe for us a few times and I thought he did OK in those games. There's talent there IMO, though he did find the physicality of English football a challenge.
