The Lizards

Let's talk about the lizards..

They've overseen stadium improvements, a great managerial appointment and the biggest assault on all fronts we've seen in years?

Anyone still not a fan?

They have made their mistakes but they have learned from them very quickly. Given what they have achieved with Red Sox and LFC, I think they are one of the best non-state funded "sports franchise" owners.

No owners are perfect but they are we good as it gets in the modern game.

Helped that are previous owners were among the worst.

They have appointed the right team and and structure to support their vision of spending spending 30 million net per season.

Klopp has a net spend of £70m in 4 seasons. We were spending that before Hicks and Gillette. If we didn't have an incredible manager that level of spending would have us mid-table. Of course, I think they've appointed a team that allows us to operate very well indeed without the need for a large outlay on transfer fees, but I just hope that the war chest is ready for the inevitable rebuild that's coming.

You have to put the context to that net spend though, silly money recouped on crap players to Bournemouth and an obscene fee for Coutinho. That combined with a growing squad of internationals and some bargain buys (Salah, Robertson) who have hit new heights, and TAA/Gomez who are potentially homegrown worldies and we haven't needed an excessive spend. Also in that time we have the noted stadium improvements, a new training ground, nigh on all dead weight shifted and all top first teamers tied to competitive long term deals (including Klopp now) all of which has cost.

I'd say the turnaround in a few years is nothing short of staggering and the owners deserve real credit for putting the people and systems in place. I'm not naive, we've more than trebled in value while the actual exteriorly-injected cash has been quite modest and if we continue this form for a few more years we could be that much more again, which would end up being an obscene ROI. I just hope if/when they sell us it would be to someone with a vested interest who'd carry on in their vein. I kind of get the feeling they like the prestige though, and while we sit as a profitable number on their sheet (well that's the game more than us) I think they'll stick around.

The bit about context re obscene amounts for Coutinho and the lads who went Bournemouth/Southampton etc is great business acumen. They know the worth and value of a player and they hold out for that amount..we knew we could bend over Barca for as much as possible and we did but they didn't just sit around with 100+million burning a hole they spent it on VVD and Becker.

While we've been frustrated at times with the management not buying in the summer for example they've been patient and focussed on getting exactly who they want.

You can say it's luck that certain players fitted in like Robbo, Salah etc but it's been careful planning to get the right bits.

They've worked purposefully with every aspect of the club from the stadium, to the nutrition lady, to buying players, long term contracts etc etc.

Credit to them for being amazing and really helping out LFC back on the global footballing map.
Lets win the league, then the champions League again, then buy Mbappe, Sancho and whoever the hell else we want and remains dominant for the next few decades

You know, I used to be a tad jealous of the insta-rich oil money clubs. It must be nice to buy your way to silverware...

... But the way we've done it, is so much more rewarding.

Yeah, it would be nice to price every one out of the market, but to win on money earned instead is more impressive.

How much of that do you credit to the scouting department. Round about the time Klopp came on board we also poached a couple of City's top scouts.

Seems like spending more money on scouts was a wiser investment than spending it on players.

They have been very good for us overall, but they also have long term plans to regain some of their investment in these players over the last few years. In their recent interview I think they hope we win the title, do well in the CL again, and hope we can repeat another title win next season, and then in the 21/22 season they don't expect us to win much where we go and re-build. That implies that they will probably be trying to sell off some of our best players if they want to go...

Absolutely. And if you can do it that way, why not? We have every bit as good a side as just about anyone at a fraction of a price. It's more sustainable and we still had the dough to splash when we need to go big in the market.

The key will be for our scouting staff to stay in front of everyone else as, if they dont, our biggest advantage is leveled.

That was not accurate, Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter joined our ranks the same year as we hired Brendan Rodgers. One of the main reasons our transfer activity was minimal during that summer when we hired Rodgers was because the new scouting group has not arrived yet, they were serving their Garden Leave till Septermber after leaving Man City. One of the many reasons behind me giving shit loads of credit to Klopp is because we had the same group of people handling our recruitment, apart from that Ayre who loves to meddle in this part of the club business, Edwards, Graham, Fallows and Hunter were all there already. The difference is Klopp knows exactly what he wants and how to work with the players he gets. He went for not name, but attributes of a player, while most managers and head coaches go for name. Klopp's request on attributes based purchase made it easier for our recruitment department to zero in on a player and get the job done swiftly.
