I'm not saying henderson has more ability than jonjo, I'm more saying henderson has ability in other areas most noteably the ability to pick a pass and to see a pass early, two qualities I like very much that maybe aren't as glamourous as a 25 yard strike. I'm sure people like jonjo because he seems very gerrardesque but I like henderson because I think given time and patience he will absolutely DESTROY teams without even getting near their penalty area.
I already like henderson more than I like adam because even at his young age he uses the ball better. henderson should be taking adam's place on the team and jonjo (eventually) should be taking gerrard's place on the team.

if I had the time and patience I would put together a video of all the times henderson has split the oppersition in two, often with a first time pass (I'm sure there are lots of examples on youtube). he is no where near the finished article but the suggestion he doesn't have ability is laughable, I give it 3 years till he is cutting open teams consistently, pretty the same amount of time it has taken lucas to mature into a quality player in his own right.

We'll have to see. I think he'll be a good players, but never good enough to destroy teams. You make it sound like he could be alonso. His passing ain't all that. Jonjo can pass just as well.

Alonso never 'destroyed teams' - he, and I doubt Henderson or Shelvey, wasn't that kind of player. He imposed himself on the game though through his passing - and ensured the flow of the game was in our favor. I guess that's 'destroying teams' but I generally reserve that term for Messi etc

I agree. Teams are rarely destroyed from the centre circle.

Jonjo could learn to destroy teams though 😉

I think his passing is better than alright, if there is a one touch pass on he'll make it, he doesn't dwell on the ball (something I hate) and keeps it ticking over nicely. when we went down to 10 men, henderson is exactly the type of player you want on the pitch because they'll retain possession and will only attempt something if it is going to open up the opposition. adam is the worst type of player to have on the pitch when down to 10 men, he'll constantly give the ball away meaning you waste energy winning the ball back.
also I'm not thinking alonso (with regards to henderson) I'm thinking more an older scholes.

that's exactly what I meant, I didn't mean literally by scoring.

That would be incredible if it happened ...

I think that is why kenny is playing him in virtually every single game as kenny wants him to grow into that role sooner rather than later.
it's not swashbuckling, it's not dynamic but with the correct players around him he will really hurt teams because he will pick out runners early and not give the opposition time to set themselves. that's why I hate it when the likes of enrique take a sea of touches to control and then pass because that gives the opposition time to set themselves and the move breaks down.

....and after a lot of ifs and buts we came to the conclusion that Alonso did actually destroy teams. But not in literary sense.
Nice one.

Everyone should sit the fuck back and learn a thing or two from Skittles when it comes to passing - that ball yesterday to Bellers for the first goal was insane in the brain.

@Binny He's such an immense talent. I've been clamoring for him to play all year. And its been a pleasure having him included recently. If only it were under better circumstances and maybe if he was played earlier the circumstances would be better.

He's my favorite player. Beast of a defender and now very classy on the ball.

People will probably argue the toss against this, but anyway....

I think there's some positives to be taken out of this season, in relation to the thread topic. I think the experience of a year struggling with a big club will stand players like Spearing, Shelvey, Henderson, Coates and Kelly in good stead. A year more experienced and hopefully ready to step out of the shadows of some of our fading stars. When Gerrard, Thompson and Murphy came through, Evans was falling by the way side, young players were thrown into that European away tie, after being picked due to suspensions to star players, and braved it out and gave a fighting display which helped give them the experience to push on in the following seasons.

We have a relatively young backline with Agger and Skrtel now acting as the lynchpins who are brimming with experience and ready to lead from the back, and we have Suarez, while someone may well get the best from Andy Carroll yet, on a consistent basis. Downing is a reasonable player and he and Bellamy provide good cover/options on the flanks.Downing was bought for the wrong price, everyone knows that, but he will provide good squad depth over the next season or so. It might be wrong that that's what £20m has got us, but he will be a good option when we add some more quality to the flanks.

It's clear we need a revamp, I'm not completely convinced by our fullback positions (though it's the least of our worries), we need a midfielder to play alongside or provide competition to Lucas and we need quality wide and upfront, but we're not a million miles off, despite our current predicament. Not in terms of on the pitch personnel anyway, Dalglish clearly needs a Summer wake up call and Comolli and others need addressing, but it's early days and we need to invest some patience in what we've got and if we stick with it, from now until the end of the season, give these boys a chance to find their feet, then we may well reap the rewards next season. They can't do any worse than some of their higher paid, price tag heavy counterparts.
