Is it ?

We've watched overpaid overrated experienced players ponce about for weeks on end now. We play without them and suddenly we show a bit of spirit and a bit of fight and actually win a game.
And I'm actually happy!

I think it's shelvey myself. Who can't help but be positive seeing that bonce

Yeah, that was my comment to a mate when I saw the team aswell.

You ciuld argue that we should have done this after th first 3-4 losses

difficult to drop a centre back to 4th choice who is on 90 grand a week

No-one is bigger than the club, therefore it's really, really simple for Kenny; "Jamie, you aren't in my first team plans if the other three are fit"

He wont though. Like all managers he's too smart to allow his own lyin eyes to decieve him. He'll have a whole bunch of statistics and evidence to prove that Carra, Kuyt, Enrique, Downing etc should be back Saturday.

I thought Jonjo played like a headless chicken at times today.

Really? I thought it was a really mature performance. He started a bit shakily, but settled down pretty quickly and looked threatening in that position between midfield and attack. Then the red card changed everything and he had to play a much more disciplined deeper role, which I think he did very well all things considered.

He showed that he's an accomplished midfielder, who is capable of playing in both advanced and withdrawn positions. Promising.

Yep.

Fair play for tonight. we really put it in and were resilient and courageous after going to ten men, but you have to wonder why we haven't put effort in like that in some of our other games. It's very frustrating.

I wonder if people forget that Shelvey only turned 20 in February because he seems to take a lot of flak for a lad that age.

Prob because we had a captain worthy of the armband

*wormageddon*

We've been too busy sulking, throwing our eyes up to heaven and waving our arms around in anger at team mates to be bothering with putting in a shift and trying to win games

I thought he did really well tonight. Excellent first 20 mins with a big hand in our second goal and then I expected the sending off to be to his detriment (with less licence to roam).

But...he produced an excellent second half taking responsibility for keeping the ball moving (showing a nice passing range) and never stopped running, displaying both quality and workrate. His best game by a country mile and one that leaves me wanting to see him start for the rest of the season. Adam's injury has done him a big favour and he's starting to look like he's got the balls to grasp the opportunity.

No, I mean in a good way. Nice to see us all a little happier. It is fecking depressing to watch lately

when lucas is back I really hopes that puts paid to gerrard (and adam) in central midfield. I really like how spearing, henderson and jonjo used the ball in central midfield, keeping possession meaning they weren't running around like headless chickens without the ball. you just know had adam or gerrard been in central midfield we would have conceeded possession time and time again as they looked to force the play with a killer ball. gerrard as a forward and adam for the bench.

The effort made all the difference today.

it was more intelligence that effort. we rarely gave the ball away, supported the player with the ball and got back in numbers when we lost the ball. this season I've been sick to death of us trying to force the play and giving the ball away cheaply as a result. you really couldn't tell we had 10 men such was our use of the ball.

Not to be a "Debbie downer" but I suspect that much of the effort we saw today was due to the players wanting to "prove themselves" ahead of the semi on Saturday.

henderson was excellent tonight. there is definately a player there.

This gets said twenty times a week and still we are waiting for him to do more than show the odd sign of potential here and there .

I agree, there's always been potential and it's been pointed out before but he seem to have confidence issues.

you can see him gaining confidence by the week. his sliding challenge at the end of the villa game and his run to the by line in the b'burn game. I think some people just need patience with young players, look at the improvement in lucas over the past year and he was older then henderson when he arrived.

Maybe we can convert him into a righback/wingback where he doesnt have to be too creative. He has a good engine

Only issue is we already have 2 good rightbacks

He's having difficulties on the right wing he should be playing closer to the center of the midfield.

Well yeah 'by the week' is exactly it as i doubt he was gaining too much confidence the week before when he was hauled off at half time at home to a shite Wigan team .

Patience -can you define how long we should wait ? Has the game changed so much that we have to carry an average player until he is 24/25 before he might come good.

I thought Jonjo played like a headless chicken at times today.

He's got great technical ability, and looks very comfortbale on the ball. His first touch is excellent, and he reads things quite well, but I take your point Gene; he's a bit loose. Maybe loose isn't the word I'm after, but it's as though he doesn't know how to play within a team. That happens quality youngsters that come from the lower leagues - they tend to hold onto it too long, to look for the difficult pass/shot/cross, and to do too much cos they've become accustomed to not wanting to rely on their teammates. Maybe it's just inexperience and naivety, but he needs to be coached how to play a more free-flowing team game, than this no guts no glory approach he has.

I like players like him. Boys that want the ball, can keep it with their heads up, and who can see things unfolding. You work with kids like that cos they've got something. Iron out the kinks and you might really have something. This isn't a criticism of Dalglish, but I'd love to see what a top class coach would do with a kid like him. Someone who could really teach him how to play as a quality midfielder.

My only concern with him is how much does he really want it? Is he desperate enough to push himself to learn to be a better player? I worry he might be a bit too comfortable in his own ability and skin. If you apply the workrate to what is quite obviously a talented kid, you'll get a player. Be interesting to see how his development goes over the next year or two.
