Poor Pickford. In any other club he'd be some other clubs regular-ass keeper.
But he had to join Everton.

Allison has been superb this season, his positional awareness is incredible in that it almost always puts him in a position to defuse the situation by doing something straight forward. Its not flashy but its seriously effective.

He doesnt have the sort of cat like reflexes that De Gea has which enable him to make genuinely eye catching saves but I dont think thats a bad thing. Reflexes peak in the early 20s and begin to decline irreversibly from that point. You can already see the decline in De Gea, he doesnt have the positioning, distribution or decision making ability of Allison.

The old school footballing wisdom was that the best defenders were 5 yards ahead mentally and so they could beat younger quicker players just by reading the game. I think Allison plays the same way, he knows what a forward is going to do before it happens and gives himself the best possible chance to counter it.

I am no expert on goalkeepers, but I think Alisson’s reflexes are seriously good. I remember watching his highlights playing for Roma and being amazed by some of his agility and reflexes. It’s just now he has less opportunity to showcase that side of his goalkeeping. Agree with your larger point - his presence and command of the area have been a revelation.

On a side note, I think Tettey’s shot that hit the post caught him off-guard and I doubt had it been going in he had it covered. Maybe that’s the best strategy playing against a great defense and goalkeeper - doing something completely unexpected.

Before the winter break, he got caught off guard by a shot cos he couldn't see it until it had left their boot, near post & he was, for once, not in the right position to simply collect it (which is often harder than it sounds at the top level but that's an aside) & had to make a fantastic reflex save. I think his reflexes are boss, as is his agility, he just doesn't have to use it much.

An analysis podcast recently said our defenders train with Allison & the other keepers practising defending movements in order to ensure they're almost always in the position to block the posts or sides of the goal, forcing players to aim shots more centrally than you otherwise see, whereas traditional defending has always been to try to block the goal entirely.

This not only shows great faith in the keepers, but it also explains why we often sit & marvel at how Allison rarely seems to be in the wrong place, the ball seems to be attracted to him like a magnet, & so many strikers seem to suddenly want to hit the ball straight at him. Like a lot of what we do, repetition & positional excellence goes a long way to making it great, & making it look easier than it actually is.

Of course, you then have the reputation thing, in that every player knows that they'll get precious few chances, & that Allison & VVD are the best in the world, which obviously gets in their head, we saw two examples yesterday, & Son against Spurs springs to mind too, they just snatch at shots cos the chance is so rare & they know it probably won't happen again.

Other than the Cruijff turn he attempted against Leicester lol.

But other than that I am finding it hard to think of a goal he's conceded where you think "he should have saved that".

Utd at home last season was a howler but he that’s about it for really obvious ones.

I've noticed this. When an opposition player Is winding up for a shot, sometimes our defence parts for them. Almost "go on then, if you think you can beat Ali..."

But I can see that it a, gives becker a clear view of the ball, b, takes the deflection out of it and c, as you say narrows them to aim into the centre of the goal, where he just gobbles them up.

This is wonderful innovation to see, and due to complete trust in Ali.

To top things off, he then catches anything near the middle and I don't recall the ball ever bouncing off him. Remarkable.

Did anyone notice that throw yesterday that crossed half way towards one of our boys (could not remember who) and set the attack going. Wow, The strength and accuracy.

Alison best skills is his positioning. He doesn’t need to make the reflex saves as his starting position is so good so often. It’s a bit like vvd rarely ever going to ground with a tackle

Yep. It looked different to any other goalie throw didn't it? So powerful! Another string to his bow...

Anyone got a clip of that throw? Accurate. Fast. Strong. Direct. Cuts throw the mid field. Beautiful to behold.

I've seen throws that went much further (and I'm sure Alisson is capable of them too), but the thing about this one is how flat and low to the ground it was the whole time. A high, looping pass is harder to control – but this kind of throw is almost like a regular through ball, Firmino hardly had to do anything to collect it into his stride.

We really are taking the mic with this ‘chaos’ football aren’t we ?

First we popularise the playmaking marauding fullbacks. Who’ve thought that fullbacks can contribute to a big chunk of assists each season ?

Then we turn one of our forwards into a 360 all-rounder who plays defense, midfield and striker with equal devastation. Nobody knows how to mark a player like that.

And now we seemed to have created a new position. The quarterback goalkeeper. A GK who not only keeps clean sheets, marshall the defense but also launches long range missiles for a touchdown.

I mean, imagine going to football school, doing your badges and then come up against us, a team that messes with your sanity and logic.

No wonder Pep and those fans over at the fume have all gone mental.

To be fair, Pep was the first to introduce the "quarterback GK" to England with Ederson.

I'd just like to point out that I got his GK shirt for christmas and the only game I didn't wear it for watching at home (yes i'm that guy) was the Wolves game. It is literally magic.

New faithful.

Does anyone have a vid of “the” save he made against Norwich when they were through one-on-one? That has to be one of the best pieces of goalkeeping I’ve seen in recent history. When he made the stop without fouling the player, whilst simultaneously clearing the ball, I released a small amount of pee.
