personally I think what has fucked us more than anything is not spending the keane money on a striker, whether the board withheld the money or rafa choosing not to spend it the end result is the same, relying on an injury prone striker to remain fit all season. not likely to happen, is it?

I'm not following this. What point was Rafa trying to prove by taking off Torres?
I thought he was trying to prove some kind of point to Torres, Keni. Maybe I'm wide of the mark, but it's hardly un-Rafa like is it? And lets face it, if he's gonna start doing it with our best players then his timing is fucking shit.

Is it wrong to actually not give a fuck that we didn't win today?

I just shrugged my shoulders at the final whistle at yet another predictable performance and result.

The club is rotten to the core...
From terrible owners, to a stubborn/crazy manager and players that are not up to it and/or not giving two fucks about the Liverpool shirt. Bad times.

Really? What kind of point?

To me it just seemed like the usual "he's tired and we needed to manage" him deal.

FWIW. I don't think it's in Benitez character to fuck the club over and try and stitch it for money.

I think he will walk, not least of all because of his ludicrous "guarantee" of fourth spot, it looked as unlikely then as it does now.

Christ knows, I am with Terrier on this one.
We need a name, to attract the right players, but we need someone that keeps it simple, football is a simple game, that gets made over-complicated. We need someone that has the right interpersonal skills.
It all keeps coming back to Jose I am afraid

I don't think he is that motivated by money, besides if he falls out of our job , straight into another, equally as well paid , there is no loss of earnings to compensate him for.

liverpool may be better served getting a manager used to motivating players and working with limited funds. I don't see us getting a high profile manager with things as they stand off the pitch.

there is that, and even though the majority of our fans think he is useless he would almost certainly get a top job.

I really dont understand the thinking that Liverpool doesn't appeal to him in the current state. He will have the 4 world class players to start with. He would also have the opportunity to return the one of the biggest clubs in world football back to the top of football again. That does wonders for an ego and he has a massive one to feed.

Money wise i think he has managed at one club where money was splashed out and that was at chelsea. Anyone have any idea he has spent at Inter. I know the Eto signing was alot but was it a swap deal for the swede. Porto again he didn't spend alot.

I really think if the job becomes avaliable he will jump at it, this is a man who had the Liver bird as background on his mobile phone. Well according to Carra anyway.

The end was Athens 2007.
Although this can, and will be, construed as a bit over-reactionary and undeservedly harsh I believe there is some merit in it. By this final the team was more Rafa's, the players fully immersed in his way of doing things and we were up against what, if I recall correctly, was a Milan weaker than we faced in 2005, and there for the taking according to many people's opinions. And Rafa went for some smart-arse formation that failed.

It feels like we've been on a downward spiral since then, with last season's title challenge being the highlight, with many, many lowlights littering the road along the way. Even the title challenge has been afforded an over-rated reputation in my view since we blew it in the mid-season (as usual) but that fact was somewhat blurred by the fact we remained ahead of Utd by some distance due to their games in hand. Once it all unwound we were left chasing and closed in when it was a little too late.

So yes, Athens 2007 can reasonably be put forward as the moment we went over the top and started on the down slope.

*cough* 2nd place finish last year *cough*

*cough* when it should have been 1st but for his play-not-to-lose-rather-than-to-actually-win tactics and formations *cough*

regardless of that, 2nd place is hardly a step backwards from 3rd (the position we finished the year we reached the final).

Fair.

However it is but one bright spot on five years of trophy-less, mostly negative, tentative anti-football.

I hate Rafa's play not to lose rather than try to win mentality as much as the rest of you, but today he put out a team and made substitutions that created , I believe, at least 6 match winning situations that were not taken. Is that Rafa's fault? And regardless of No'good's failings , he got into positions that Torres had not been getting into.So its easy to say that Torres would have put those chances away, but would he have been in those positions the way he was playing today?

that game was a pisser though. just winning that one game would change rafa's stats to 2 european cups and 1 fac in 5 seasons (not including this one) which would be pretty darn impressive.

how is that clutching at straws? two finals in 3 years is pretty darn impressive. don't make out that I think this season has been anythng other than an abject failure because I don't.

Above, you were talking about giving Rafa a european trophy that he didn't win and saying such a record would be impressive. Now THAT was clutching at straws. Nice backtrack though.

Anyhow, I personally don't feel 2 finals in 3 years is really THAT impressive (at least the way we did it).

United have done 2 in 2, Bayern, Valencia, Madrid, Milan have all had coaches that have done similarly (2 in 3).

Now, winning 2 in 3 years would be undoubtedbly impressive. But it's a lot less impressive when you only get to the final because you can rest all your players as you're 30 points behind the leaders in your league. The aforementioned teams have won the european cup as part of doubles and trebles (or respectable league campagins).

Hmmm... I am no longer sympathetic towards Rafa but is it 5 years without trophy?

2005 CL, 2006 FA Cup.

arrgghh!! i said it at the start of the season that we should sack him and this is exactly why! the man has no fucking clue what he is doing anymore!

I wasn't having a go at gerrard the player, gerrard the player is peerless, actually gerrard the 'captain' was peerless when we won that european cup.
