The Donkey

over-rated more like.

It’s increasingly looking like we got conned into overpaying for an average player on the back of the one stellar season he’s had in his career.

I was thinking about our attackers/creative players.

Darwin, I am rapidly losing faith with. He has had his bedding in last year. 80 millions!

He's had a few shit games as have most of our strikers, however, for people to start writing him off when he is easily our 2nd best striker just stinks of capriciousness. We all sings his praises a few weeks ago. He has 14 GAs this season. No doubt he needs to pick his game, and its taking him longer to adjust to English football and climate, but he is way better than you guys suggest.

7 goals in 27 appearances isn’t good by any measure of a Number 9.

Darwin's largely been a disappointment this season... But yet he's still fine margins away from being one of the world's most deadly attackers.

He absolutely does my head in but there's something there. I don't know if he (or Klopp) will unlock it, though.

Fingers crossed because he has the attributes.

He's got to start scoring soon. Otherwise it won't have worked out. It's that simple. Mind you that assist last week. More of those would work too

What you on about you pedant ?

You being all over the place like a mad womans’s piss.

You’re over thinking it - he’s just not that good - nothing to do with attitude or application and he’s clearly not one of life’s great thinkers - neither was Suarez, who was/is just a maniac - albeit a very skillful and focused maniac.

Suarez was one of the smartest and most instinctive players I've ever seen play for us.
Can you be both? In Suarez's case, yes.
What separated him from other strikers wasn't just his tenacity and work rate. It wasn't his "win at any cost" attitude, it was his unpredictability.
When defenders thought he'd go right, he'd go left, when defenders thought "there's no chance he'll try to dribble past me" he did just that.
Even his style of dribbling was chaotic, remember how it looked like he tried to nutmeg defenders when trying to get past them? He wasn't.
Instead of going left or right like the defender anticipated he knocked the ball on their legs, making them lose balance, got the ball back, went past and got a shot on goal. Before that, I had never seen a player do that on purpose.
To be able to pull that off you need impeccable ball control, something Nunez is lacking.

There's no comparison between him and Darwin.

Suarez is the best striker I've ever seen play for LFC.

Facepalm.

Can we just agree that Nunez is shite ?

One thing that is irritating me all fucking season though, is that one of the only basic striker goals that Nunez scores for uruguay, and for his career, with any regularity is a header from a cross.

I thought when he came in he'd be getting crosses onto his head from the right. We do play that ball sometimes but not anywhere near as much as when he was first purchased.

We'd get more goals targeting Diogo.

[article]Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has said it "would be so unfair" to judge the contribution of Darwin Nunez to the team on goals alone, and he believes the Uruguay striker is "playing a much better season than last year".

Nunez has scored seven goals for the Reds this season but has failed to find the net in any of his past 10 club appearances.

He scored 15 times in 2022-23, which was his first campaign in England after moving to Liverpool from Benfica.

Lijnders said: "Darwin is full of desire, you see that in each game. If we would only judge players on the goals, that would be so unfair.

"I feel there's a good connection between Mo [Salah] and Darwin - the way they see each other and assist each other.

"Above everything, I feel that Darwin is playing a much better season than last year; the way he defends for the team, how he controls the centre and at the same time puts pressure, the way he chases back and his counter-press as well.

"He is learning and I like him a lot. This guy is full of fire. That's what our stadium likes and that's what we need as well, to lead the line this way. He can only become better."

Lol. Alright then, we do NOT judge an £85 million striker on his goals. At least not yet....

I'm willing to give Uruguayan Heskey another season to prove himself.

If nothing improves, he can go.

"Uruguayan Heskey" is so perfect, lol.

People fiorget Heskey was the original donkey. And how many times did we, OGs argue over Heskey - that he should not be judged on goals alone ?

Mind you I’d still rather have Heskey over Nunez. Hmm, on second thought that’s a bit of a tough call that one.

I don't know why people called Heskey a donkey - I remember him carrying us in his first season with us, and he scored 17 goals that season if I remember clearly (could be wrong). Owen was injured a lot that season, but when Owen returned the following season and then after - he scored a lot less, but a lot of that was down to him looking up at our golden boy and being the provider for him.

The two players aren't comparable at all stylistically, positionally, or anything really. I guess both were called donkeys by arseholes.

I remember some heskey misses, I remember good things too. Not all strikers are a Suarez or a Torres. We've been very lucky.

We've had much worse players, that no one debated about at all, because there was nothing to debate.

I remember those discussions, but I didn't know the true meaning of Donkey until I saw Andy Carroll play. Heskey was Berbatov compared to him.

He wouldn't be alive though, because I went back in time to shoot hitler but his grandad dove in the way of the bullet. Let that one percolate.

If that was Darwin’s grandad, he was clearly in an offside position and interfering with play.

Mind you, if you’d let Darwin’s grandad take the shot - he probably would have missed anyway.
