I'll keep my fingers firmly crossed Agger is ready for this match.

Don't know if he'll stabilize our back from the off but we sure could do with some fresh blood in central defense. It's been in a shambles of late.

There's no way he'd start even if fit. 20 mins at the end if everything is looking good.

rafa will put out the strongest side possible to put the game to bed as quickly as possible. the only change from the weekend I foresee is mash coming in for yossi or riera.

ChL-matches are often played at a different pace than those in our domestic competitions, hence it would be better to ease a player in against the likes of Fiorentina compared to e.g. a game at Elland Road.

But you're probably right, he'll probably stay at home and play with the Reserves.

I really do think we could use him these days though and I'm a bit concerned about the prospect of seeing Carra & Skrtl on their current form up against Drogba & co. coem Sunday to be honest.

Me too. But Agger isn't ready for Chelsea even if he's ready to start playing again.

Lack of match fitness would see him eaten alive.

If not Carra - Skrtel then Kyriagkos Zorba.

That's the main issue and I think you're completely right here.

Playing Agger against Fiorentina would mean that one of Carra or Skrtl would get a rest though and maybe the timing wouldn't be to shabby for this. They've looked drained for self-confidence really and maybe a weeks rest would do them a world of good?

I fear that more defensive errors come midweek between the two of them would make their morales even worse come the Chelski game.

Looked at another way, it's a chance for them to improve understanding and form before the Chelsea match.

That's of course another way of looking at it but as I do believe we'll become an even better team with Agger back, it's pivotal that he's regaining his match fitness sooner rather than later.

With the current climate at the back no-one can criticize Rafa for breaking up the current partnership, and I think we will gain more from getting Agger match-fit compared to playing Carra/Skrtl once more really.

As I see it, Carra has lost a bit of faith in Skrtl and as they are both blatantly lacking in form and self-confidence I don't think another game would help them much for the time beeing. One of them need a break - maybe it's Carra - and it's certain that the one rested will be completely turned on for Sunday's game.

Both injured.

The Mascher is 'sick', flu or something and Yossi has a leg injury.

OK, team without Mascher or Yossi:

Reina

Magic - Carra - Skrtel - Aurelio

Lucas - Gerrard

Babel - Kuyt - Riera

Torres

Or we could conceivably play Voronin at no10 instead of Kuyt, I suppose - save Dirk's legs for Sunday.

Exactly some boy to pull the strings our Andriy

Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Aurelio
Babel Gerrard Lucas Riera
Kuyt Torres

Insua and Mascherano (if fit) to replace Aurelio and Babel against Chelsea. Maybe Yossi for Riera as well.

Are Fiorentina good at set pieces? Maybe Kyrgiakos could get a start.

Sorry if it's already been posted but:

Contrary to reports it appears that Yossi has travelled to Italy with the squad

Benayoun in squad for Fiorentina

Contrary to reports earlier in the day, Liverpool winger Yossi Benayoun does travel with the Reds squad to Italy for tomorrow’s Champions League clash with Fiorentina.

It is understood the Israeli midfielder is carrying a leg injury picked up during the Reds’ 6-1 victory over Hull City on Saturday, but could recover to play in time.

However Javier Mascherano is definitely confirmed as out of tomorrow’s game with a tight hamstring. It has previously been reported the Argentine skipper was suffering from flu.

The club’s official web site confirms the squad that has flown to Italy as: Reina, Cavalieri, Johnson, Skrtel, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Aurelio, Insua, Lucas, Spearing, Plessis, Kuyt, Gerrard, Voronin, Torres, Babel, Riera, Benayoun.

Fiorentina also miss their best player against us, as Gilardino was sent off against Lyon.

Good home team, very good support and some great individual players.
But we should be stronger than them, and an away win would set us up nicely for the rest of the group games.

Since we don't play again until sunday, I'd play the strongest side possible.

Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli admitted Liverpool's free-scoring form, with 18 goals in their last six matches, has him worried.

"We're not going to start already beaten, but all those goals are starting to make me a little anxious," said Prandelli

From the Guardian...

Dirk Kuyt was unable to reproduce the Istanbul miracle when he reduced Liverpool's deficit against Milan in the 2007 Champions League final but a remarkable recovery began that night nonetheless. The revival concerned Kuyt himself and has been so extensive that in Florence tonight he could find himself in the exalted company of the finest Liverpool predator of all, Ian Rush.

Kuyt failed to score in 10 Champions League appearances for Rafael Benítez's side until his 89th-minute header brought hope in Athens two years ago. In 24 Champions League appearances since, he has added a further 11 goals and now stands third on the list of Liverpool goalscorers in their cherished competition. Steven Gerrard leads that illustrious roll call with 19, and has a staggering 32 in Europe in total, but the sight of Rush in second on 14 offers an incentive that even Kuyt, the consummate team man, finds enticing.

"To have the chance to maybe draw level with someone like Ian Rush is unbelievable," said the striker yesterday. "He is one of the biggest names in the history of the Liverpool Football Club and it would give me a great feeling if I could manage to do that. I have to be respectful of his achievements in his career, but it would be good to match his goals and maybe continue scoring." Reverting to humble type, he added: "The milestones are nice but, if you don't have anything to go with them like a trophy, then it is not the same."

Kuyt's post-Athens spree is worthy of the prolific reputation he brought with him from Feyenoord in 2006 but which initially diminished as Benítez moulded the Dutchman into the tireless cog on the Liverpool right. He is at a loss to explain the transformation. "I'm not sure why it has gone so well for me," Kuyt said. "I don't try and do anything different from in the Premier League but I do feel confident going into big Champions League games."

The Dutchman's progress up the Liverpool goal chart is timely given the criticism that came his way this weekend from Jermaine Pennant, of all people. The undistinguished winger, now of Real Zaragoza, blamed Benítez's methodical approach for his own failure at Anfield, adding that the £10m spent on Kuyt ensured he was always guaranteed a first-team place. "I will not talk too much about what he said," Benítez responded last night. "Kuyt can do his talking on the pitch. His record is out there. I don't need to say anything else."

Liverpool will be without the Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano against the Italians tonight due to a hamstring strain suffered in training on Sunday. Though overlooked amid Liverpool's greater adventure at home, his absence may be felt more keenly at the Stadio Artemio Franchi or at Stamford Bridge on Sunday should he fail to recover. "Hopefully it will take two or three days," said Benítez. "He felt his hamstring in shooting practice and the doctor said we had to be careful with him." Yossi Benayoun, who suffered a leg injury in the weekend thrashing of Hull City, is set to be fit.

The Fiorentina coach, Cesare Prandelli, made a brief appearance against Liverpool in the ill-fated 1985 European Cup final at Heysel and yesterday heralded Benítez as his "role model" for "the way he organises the team and the dressing room". A rather bashful Liverpool manager replied: "Thank you, although it is the kit man who organises the dressing room, not me."

Fiorentina collected only two points from a possible nine at home in the group stage last season, although they are unbeaten in three encounters with English opposition on Tuscan soil. "Prandelli has done a very good job here," added Benítez. "They know their jobs and they know how to attack and defend."

The F6 group, meanwhile, have confirmed that their chairman, Prince Faisal bin Fahad bin Abdullah Al-Saud, has agreed a partnership deal with George Gillett over two youth academies in Saudi Arabia and two in north Africa. Prince Faisal's claims of buying a 50% stake in Liverpool have been denied by Anfield officials, although he will also link up with Gillett over the latter's aim to expand his Nascar interests into the Middle East.

By Gabriele Marcotti...

To understand Fiorentina, their supporters and their relationship with the team you need look no further than the banner the club's Ultras displayed following the death of manager Claudio Cesare Prandelli's wife, Manuela, two years ago.

"The passing of time will blunt the pain, but know that when you need her close to you, you only need to raise your eyes towards the heaven. Her star will guide you forever and take us all far."

The term 'family club' has too often been overused, but as far as La Viola is concerned, it's spot on. Prandelli fought back tears as he thanked the Ultras and the rest of the Fiorentina support in one of the most emotional days the club has known.

The flip-side is that passions run very high and these can also be some of the most demanding fans in Serie A. Fiorentina lacks the financial might of the Milan clubs or Juventus, and Florence lacks the size and catchment area of a Naples or Rome, yet the expectation is that the Viola should compete on equal footing.

And that can be a problem, especially in seasons like this one, which saw the club lose their best midfielder, Brazilian stalwart Felipe Melo, without adequately replacing him, something which caused turmoil among the supporters.

Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastian Frey is a colorful and competent goalkeeper, who plays with intensity and aggression. At one point, he seemed on the cusp of stardom, these days he's more than content with his role at Fiorentina. He's an excellent shot-stopper who's not afraid to come off his line.

The defence is anchored by Alessandro Gamberini. His name literally means 'little shrimp' in Italian, but he's quite the opposite: big, physical and surprisingly mobile for a man his size. He'll either be partnered by Per Kroldrup, the former Everton defender who had a nightmare at Goodison or, more likely, veteran Dario Dainelli who is solid but vulnerable to pace.

Lorenzo De Silvesteri joined from Lazio immediately before the close of the transfer market and he's definitely one to watch.

vargasThe 21-year-old right-back is athletic, technically gifted and one of the more promising players in Serie A, although he's been slowed by injury over the past two seasons. At left-back it's a toss-up between the more disciplined Massimo Gobbi (a recycled midfielder) and the more adventurous Manuel Pasqual.

Riccardo Montolivo is the leader of the midfield. He's a tidy passer with a dangerous long-range shot who, at 24, is on the fringes of the Italy squad. He hasn't developed as quickly as some would have liked, but he has had to cope with the difficult job of carrying the the side through some very tricky times.

Alongside him will be either Marco Donadel, a steady if unspectacular holding midfielder, or Cristiano Zanetti, who arrived in the summer from Juventus.

The veteran Zanetti, a former Italian international, is skillful and a very reliable ball winner, but his career has been blighted by injury (the fact that he has started just over 200 league games in a 12-year top flight career tells its own story) and there are concerns that he has lost a yard.

Fiorentina's 4-2-3-1 is predicated upon wingers and their wide men are likely to be Marco Marchionni and Juan Vargas. Marchionni, 29, is a tricky dribbler who loves to take on opponents and delivers a decent cross, though it's the Peruvian, Vargas, who has made headlines recently.

He was a virtual unknown when he joined Catania three years ago but has since established himself as one of the best wide players in Serie A. He's especially dangerous when he cuts inside, looking to play the one-two.

Sitting just behind the centre-forward will be Adrian Mutu, formerly of Chelsea. Mutu is a very gifted player with a wicked shot and bags of creativity and invention. However, he's had a very difficult start to the season (not least because the Court of Arbitration for Sport has ordered him to pay some £15 million in compensation - money he doesn't have - for the drug test he failed while at Stamford Bridge). On his day, he's very hard to handle. The good news for Liverpool is that he really hasn't been on top of his game since last season.

mutuFiorentina's leading scorer is Alberto Gilardino, but, of course, he's suspended after being rather harshly sent off in the first group game against Lyon. More good news for the Reds, as 'Gila' appeared to be in excellent form and, in fact, he's been scoring regularly since leaving AC Milan.

In his place will be 19-year-old 'wunderkind' Stevan Jovetic, who is definitely a player to watch. The Montenegrin striker has drawn the inevitable parallels to the legendary Dejan Savicevic and while those comparisions may be premature, he is a very unpredictable and inventive player with an uncanny tendency to find space.

Fiorentina were hoping to bring him along slowly but, in fact, he's forced his way into regular playing time and he's simply been too good to leave out.

Like most young players he can be inconsistent, but, make no mistake about it, he's capable of producing genuine magic.

All told, Fiorentina are a side with a clever manager and some outstanding individuals, but also some glaring weaknesses. The absence of a veteran goalscorer like Gilardino (Jovetic is talented, but is more of a deep-lying striker anyway) is a further body blow to their chances against Liverpool.

Don't read too much into the result at the weekend: a 1-0 win at Livorno, Fiorentina rested a number of players and were also somewhat lucky.

Things will be different on Tuesday night, but it's hard to see Liverpool not returning from Tuscany with at least a point, maybe more.
