it hurt when rush and then barnes left. it killed to see mcmanaman and fowler go, that was truly heartbreaking. just compare gods press conference at leeds to the one torres just gave. fowler's one makes you cry. this one just makes you happy he's gone

Fowler was absolutely immense and, yes, I was gutted that he had to go but, that was the point, he had to go. For the good of the club he had to go cause his attitude, the culture he engendered and perhaps created, would have seen us in mediocrity. He didn't understand discipline which was what we clearly needed.

Torres - he didn't have to go. He'll never have the same place in our memory cause he never was a supporter first and a player second the way Robbie was. Having said that I think Torres felt cheated by the club and felt a little spiteful which, unfortunately for him, he couldn't rise above. He was exceptional in his first 2 1/2 years with us (despite the efforts of some on here to forget or belittle that) and many would comment "I can't believe he's ours". He was too good for the rubbish we were playing and, if it hadn't been for Gerrard he'd have never been successful with us.

He - like Owen before him - made it clear he wasn't goint to waste away while we got ourselves in order. Owen stayed a lot longer and, as he's made clear since, was ultimately pushed. Torres, though, didn't feel he had the luxury of much longer so put it on the table. Then we said "we want to take some time to create stability". Piss off. I couldn't be happier with the efforts of NESV but, as Ian pointed out in another thread, with their commitment we can really expect to challenge in 3 seasons. Torres will be 30 and he's not here to tread water to keep our head afloat while we get the ship together and then look for a striker to replace our aging one and win some trophies.

I think Torres saw it, felt he was being used, went for the transfer then listened to twats burning his shirt and calling him a Judas. Unfortunately he couldn't rise above that crap behaviour and decided to have a pop back which he will, IMO, long regret.

I am interested in what Markmc has to say about it and I have always suspected that our number 9 was a primma donna but it kind of goes with the territory these days. Either way his departure didn't strengthen us on the field; we've lost possibly the best striker in the world and I'm gutted that we don't get to see what would happen with he, Suarez and Gerrard playing together.

Having said that I am very happy with what the future holds for us. I fear Torres could bring Chelsea success in Europe this season and I feel for Gerrard if he now doesn't get the title he deserves more than anyone else. But I think we're on a straight climb to the summit while a number of other teams have a lot of problems to resolve in the next 12 months.

In fact, if I was really blunt, I only see Spurs as our major competition in the next few years domestically; they're a couple of seasons ahead of us but well run and of similar ethos. But that's a post and speculation for another thread.

Nice post.

I think generally people are just pissed off with his timing and the promises(lies) he put up.

Not that it makes any difference after all this time, but there had been a contract on the table for Owen to sign for months. He never signed and his excuses for not doing so were very unconvincing, e.g. "My agent is on holiday and I will sign when he gets back." Maybe Benitez lost his patience with him eventually but I think it's disingenuous for Owen to claim he was pushed.

Portly old mate, I think you have seen it all before, since Keegan?

I wasn't excusing Owen, mate; he was playing a dangerous game (albeit with the design of forcing the change we all wanted) and got caught out. When you play on the edge you should always know that a little push is all that stands between you and a nasty fall. The point was that Owen felt he was part of the set up enough to engineer change. Torres just didn't believe he had that influence and wasn't going to wait around to prove it.

Wiz - Fowler was sold cos 12M quid for a crock was wonderful business, far more so that trying to rid any "culture" issues he may have been polluting the club with.

Apparently Liverpool wanted a gentlemans agreement that Torres wouldn't play against us on Sunday but they wouldn't agree!

They didn't have enough time to look up the meaning before the deadline passed.

Good post, Wizardry.
I have to agree with the comments made by Portly and Ryan.
I don't think Owen was trying to force a change before he left. He just had Madrid in his mind. I don't think Owen is even a fan now.
Fowler was rightly sold because he was at that time damaging the club more than contributing to it. He's always been and will forever be a fan like all of us here.
As for Torres - I hope he enjoys similar success in his new club to the success Owen and Fowler enjoyed since leaving us. He was great indeed for more than two years, but then thing changed and eventually Monday's outcome was inevitable under the circumstances.

It was like a soured relationship where one partner was disenchanted and flirting with new potential lovers and the other desperate to keep their partner, partly not because she still makes him happy -in fact, her sulks and infrequent ecstatic moments frustrate him terribly- but because he hates the thought of seeing her in another's arms.

Little does the chap realise in his heartache that he'll be much happier after the breakup, not having to look at her surly bake anymore, and not wondering when she's going to leave him.

From a friend of mine...

Ken Early had a great quote on Newstalk yesterday about Michael Owen: "He walked out on Liverpool for bigger and better things and ended up like that Nazi that picked the wrong chalice at the end of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade."

its only illegal in a written contract, under a gentlemans agrement it isn't

Torres isn't even the best Spanish striker, nevermind the best in the world.

But he is a great player when the team is set up to play to his strengths, as we were under Rafa.

When it's not, you get the Torres of the World Cup.

He'll still score a lot of goals for Chelsea, as would many strikers, but I'm not sure he'll ever have an entire team dedicated to meeting his needs or have support strikers as unselfish as Kuyt or Gerrard.

Lampard, Drogba and Anelka will shoot if they sniff half a chance, even if Torres is in a better position, so welcome to that world Fernando.

I found it ironic that he saud he was looking forward to playing with Yossi again, given the fact that he was so frequently incredulous and frustrated at Yossi's inability or unwillingness to release the final pass on which he is dependent.

I don't know whether we have seen the best of Torres (I suspect we have). But I know for sure that we got amazing value in the market with him, we bought him for about 20m and sold him for about 50m after milking him for loads of goals and selling loads of crap with his name or image on it. When Chelsea sell Torres, it's likely they'll lose a fair old wedge, unles they sell him in the next couple of years.

Torres and Gerrard were 1 and 2 best-selling replica shirts for the last two years.

Looks like Stevie's going to take that No.1 spot !

I disagree Gene. Sadly I think at Chelsea we'll see the Torres of his first two years with us. He's at the point now where he's fully fit, and most importantly for him, he's actually gonna be making an effort. He's gonna score tonnes of goals for them.

But who cares, screw him.

I'm excited about Suso today 🙂

Nah Gene, he's just been promoted to the senior squad. It would be magic if he did play though.

What about poor Peacheco? Actually, I hope he plays tonight
