Torres' commitment to Liverpool this season was questioned prior to his move and he admitted he had begun thinking about leaving Anfield last summer.

"I felt from last summer that I needed to do a step forward in my career and for my ambition as a footballer," he told Chelsea TV, claiming Chelsea were on another level to his former club.

"I am joining a team that is at the top level. There is not another level after Chelsea.

"I am joining with big names like (John) Terry, (Frank) Lampard, (Didier) Drogba and (Nicolas) Anelka and I can be part of this great team."



Seems he has mellowed overnight.

I'm happy with the £50 million deal. We only got the best out of the Spaniard on occasions, the rest of the time he was injured or under-performing with the familiar sulky face. I have a feeling that although he will score goals for them, Chelsea won't get their £50 million out of him either.

It's actually very difficult for a star player to transfer to another club without upsetting the fans. You can be up-front about it, as Kevin Keegan was when he announced half-way through the season that he would be at Hamburg next season. From that time forward he was hated. Or you can be sneaky about it, as Michael Owen was when he kept coming up with feeble excuses why he had not signed his new contract. Everybody hated him for that too.

He was a part of a team that consisted of world class players like Reina, Hyypia, Mashcerano, Alonso and Gerrard. It's not like he's been playing with a bunch of conference players until now.

The side becomes all about them, and they do *temporarily* become bigger than the club if the club is under confident and pandering as we have when we were going through a tough patch since Christmas 2009, when the last title challenge unraveled.
