Batistuta has to be qualified as a superstar who played in this decade. Berbatov on the other hand?

And to assume that only offensive players could be qualified as superstars doesn't do the cause any good either.

I won't even start with the nonsense about the 'lesser' leagues. Bayern Munich was in the CL final for example. You do realize that players like Raul or van Nistelrooy that EXACTLY fit your (questionable) bill play in Germany, don't you?

I suggest you read the original post more carefully. The whole purpose of identifying superstars for a particular decade is by looking at whether they've played for a majority of that decade and in a quality league.

You might well argue for Batistuta being a superstar from 1990-2000 because that's when his prime years were! Saying that Batistuta was a superstar in this decade when he played for a grand total of 3 years scoring some 20 odd goals is equivalent to saying that Pele was a superstar of this decade.

The point about players in other positions is a valid one and one that I'll respond to separately.

I won't bother with a response. The purpose of coming up with this thread was to have a debate. Fabio, kingjulian, Brendan and others have contributed and raised excellent points. You, on the other hand, are harping about something quite stupid and are consequently making a fool of yourself. Don't bother with a response unless you have something to say about we were discussing.

Dmish, I can't behind a set of self made criteria to come to a set of results. That's the whole reason why the player you think is the best (or biggest superstar) ever isn't going to be the same as anyone elses. It's just too individual.
Ken is right, if you are simply looking to identify superstar, then shirt sales and marketability are far more important than trophies won or impact.
World class is different again.

Ps-Babel should be on your original list.

It's always going to fail when people try to decide world class players using stats and goals scored etc, like Oncy says its an individual choice and though of course we are all biased its likely the vast majority would agree who is NOT world class on a given list of players.

RE Zidane he may not have the stats but is brilliant has done it on the world stage countless times including champions league and two of the three top leagues. Ribery might have a decent set of stats but *I* have not seen him do much, I suppose Zlatan is another where people have serious disagreements.

I would not consider Ronaldinho cos after a few very good seasons he has been largely anonymous.
