Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, plans to rest Raheem Sterling in January in an effort to prevent the forward, who is three days short of his 20th birthday, from burning out.
Sterling has featured in all 14 of his club’s Barclays Premier League matches so far and his tally of 13 starts puts him more than halfway to the total he reached for the whole of last season.
Sterling attracted criticism in October when he apparently asked Roy Hodgson, the England manager, to let him sit out the Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia, complaining of tiredness. The issue placed further strain on the relationship between Liverpool and England, who aired their differences after Daniel Sturridge suffered a thigh injury while on international duty in September. Sturridge subsequently suffered a calf injury and is now rehabilitating in California.
Including international and Champions League matches, Sterling has already made 26 appearances in a season that started 54 days after the last of his three World Cup matches. While Sterling has been a Liverpool mainstay during the first third of this campaign, Rodgers believes he will need a break in the new year, for the sake of his career.
“There will be a period [of rest], that was always in the plan,” Rodgers said. “Of course, there is the short term, but you have got to think in the longer term. He’s a kid coming off the back end of a long season. It takes a bit of time to get going again.”
