Regarding the "fool" comment, it's this simple...

1. We issue a "no personal insult" policy.
2. Somebody insults somebody else.
3. I warn them.

We didn't issue a chart, showing degrees of insults. An insult is an insult. But that's me.

If the mods all tell me that I've acted too harshly, I will apologise to Rebel, and "un-warn" him.

Oh, wait, you've popped onto my radar now

The 'dull' icon is flashing red
That hurts, Biffa. Because I care so much what you think.

Add 'ard' to that word, and mine is now flashing too.

And, as usual for you, you can't answer the question. Like all bullies, you really can't handle it when people don't run and hide from you...

You really are incredibly predictable. And boring.

Fucking hell, you were a *boss* choice as a mod

Hahahahah!
Ouch. Again.

You're killing me here.

Ok, will do

I was just worried that after 'fool' merited a warning, that calling him 'dull' may have been a suicide note

'Night waddapie

This is what I wondered about when Herr said everyone knows what "over the line" abuse is.

Are we now applying the unwritten code we had before, except to everyone? That's how it was presented. This code would have never involved ANYONE being banned for calling someone a fool.

Let's have a bit of sense here. This is SCM.

Fool? Really? Let's have an actual, mutually understood idea of what the fark the "new" rules are. It would be nice if these new rules were somewhere in the same universe of the site that we've been on for years now. I thought that was the idea.

Ali, two things...

1. He wasn't banned, mate. He was warned. He was still a few steps from being banned.

2. It's since been publicly revopked and apologised for.

Ok?

I'm not all up in arms about it, sorry if I gave that impression, I just don't really know what is and what is not abuse, and it doesn't appear that there is any consensus on this. I mean, is there any scope to insult someone? Can I say that someone is saying something that is stupid, but not call them stupid for saying it? Is stupid ok, but mong isn't? This will be important tomorrow if I want to throw my laptop through my TV and have to listen to the typical people say the typical things. What is my upper bound of abuse?

I'm not a particularly abusive poster in the first place, and I think this will tend to organically work itself out (this sortof statement has been made before, we calm down then it comes up again), but is this a case of we are going to tackle persistently abusive posters, without making a value judgment on the rest of their posting, their motivation, post count or standing, or is it a case where there is a new code of conduct. I honestly don't know.

The general principles we'll be using from now on will be:

1. Attacking the poster, rather than the post.

I think it's self explanatory.
.

2. Making the natives restless

This is a catch-all rule for general trolling, bitching and similar. Certain posters have an ability to piss off large quanties of regulars on here. If a moderator feels that said poster is doing this intentionally or is the cause of the mess, then the poster can and will be warned/banned. If this poster was being goaded by others, then they'll be the ones getting warned/banned.

We have three ban lengths, 1 day, 1 week, 1 lifetime.

I'm in agreement Farky to a point. It's not about rules or policies it's about us aligning to the same principles. And that, for me anyway, is about having just a little more respect for each other and less fucking insulting chaos. I've said it many times. I WANT the forum to carry on with it's banter and humour that's why we all come here. I just want to see less snowballing of debate into pure slagging off where the original point of the debate is lost in a quagmire of insults. It's not hard for fucks sake everyone.

And when the mods ask to tone it down or remove things that we feel are insulting or OTT then just respect our decisions instead of making it a free for all debate and whether it was right or not. It's not a science and we're not perfect but at least support us in what we try and do. Wee put a lot of work into the site and just want people to enjoy it AND try and attract more posters.

There - in a nutshell and we will temper it with common sense and the mods are all joined up on this one.

We've debated the thing to death. Everyone's clear (hopefully) and if not they will be as we go along. Let's all just move on from here eh?

I agree we "have debated the thing to death" but if anything you've just contrived to make things even more difficult for yourself. TBH, I haven't a clue what's acceptable and what's not. Oncy claimed in another thread that we don't want to take away most of the piss-taking that goes on, citing that's what makes this place great, well by issuing someone with a warning (whatever fucking level of warning it was) for calling someone else "a fool" you guys have dug yourselves a massive hole.

I'm sure this isn't what you wanted me to type, but you're bringing a lot of this on yourselves really.

Ross, you seem absolutely immune to accepting any form of criticism ever.

It's fine to admit you're wrong sometimes.

The fool thing I think was a misinterpreation Ryan. We need to have some 'spike' on the forum you ..erm... whopper. As I've said elsewhere we want things to continue mostly as normal but we've got to stop what starts off as a debate or minor insult trade snowballing into full on custard pie fight which (a) ruins the thread and (b) propogates into other threads. Completely OTT comments will be stopped immediately. We've got to keep the vibe of the site we're pretty all agreed on just nip it in the bud and be more even handed in applying that principle. And when we do enforce those principles through ban or other measure it's not the cue for a full-on debate on whether it was the right thing to do or not. That's all really - does that clarify it ?
