Strange preseason?

Is it just me or has this been a really weird and quiet preseason?

Normally there are lots of friendlies being played and you can actually see something approaching the first team playing. This time we had a couple money spinners in Asia that may as well have training matches followed by two games against Hull and Galatasary in which we fielded teams that would struggle to get named for the Carling Cup.

City, Chelsea and Utd have all been fielding mostly first choice players from what I've seen. I have to say that I'm a little concerned going into this season that we'll see the same sort of start we saw in Rafa's last season - players looking very rusty and playing like strangers.

And all of this is discounting the fact that we need to bed in three or four players into what is arguably our "first team".

No, it's not just you, I feel the same. That coupled with concerns about our defence has left me worried about getting in the top 4.

it's the same every pre season, we play everyone but the cleaning lady and achieve nothing. we don't look fit in the first game of the season and there is also a lack of understanding with the players. yeah yeah shop window for the dross but why can't we orgainse two sets of friendies, one with the dross (actually wasn't that the galatasaray game?) and one with players likely to play?

I'm not overly concerned.

The next 10 days will be far more important preparation, and will be the first time our usable squad will be able to play cohesively and put what they have been doing on the training ground to test.

They have spent more time in Anfield than any of the other top teams who have been touring a lot more.

Further, we are starting at home for the first time since Jesus Christ, so i'm actually thinking we will have a bright start to the season.

Reina just returning from surgery, Gerrard not back yet, Suarez not here at all, Agger injured etc etc.

It hasn't been ideal by any stretch, and it's going to take a bit of luck to pull it all together for the opening day.

King Kenny isn't revealing too much is he? Putting our surplus players in the shopping window. I hope that it doesn't backfire. We need to hit the ground running.

The Mancs have often started slowly in recent seasons. It's where you finish that counts. We have the right people directing operations, so I'm optimistic.

True I agree. Thats the only thing giving me solace.

I wish I shared your blind (to a point) faith.

It's always managers (Kenny included) going on about getting everyone in for preseason (usually when talking about new signings) so it's probably reasonable to place some importance on the value of having a strong group together for a couple months before the season starts.

Maybe it'll all just click and everyone will gel but if not hopefully it doesn't take us too long and we can grind out some results in the meanwhile (which is what the Mancs tend do if they start slowly rather than just lose and lost).

KK has won multiple leagues as Liverpool Manager, he won The Double as player-manager, he's the only living manager to have won the League with two different clubs. If we can't have 'blind faith' in the King, we can't with anybody. I'm keeping mine as he clearly knows what he's doing, if we don't know his 'masterplan'.

Faith in the King isn't blind. It's based on his CV and on the amazing effect he had on the whole club when he resumed the manager's role last season.

I'm not bothered at all by pre-season results but I would like to see a more 'first team'-type look in our next couple of games.

Yes, I can hear the horseman of the apocalypse approaching....

Didn't we start last season at home with a 1-1 home draw against the Gunners?

Yep. But the second coming was January last, so he's technically correct.

As long as we field a very strong team tomorrow and on saturday, I think we'll be fine.

It hasnt been ideal, but we have been missing upto 9 players in pre season and is why the results have been shite.

As I said in the Gala thread, that game must only be about money. Because we could have played Accrington Stanley at home and gotten the same fitness training and not have to fly for 8 hours aswell...

It is a weird preseason and I'd be feeling a lot better if we'd been winning all our games like United have. Plus, we haven't played our 'first team' yet which is worrying when you have a few new players.

However, Kenny has done enough preseasons to know what he is doing, so you have to trust he will get it right for the start of the season.

[/quote] didn't we ship a couple of players to Galatasaray at some point recently?
Perhaps the match was part of that deal.

Also all these players are no doubt working very hard in training and getting to know each other's game so the importance of pre season friendlies against lesser opposition and the development that can be gleaned from them is probably being overstated here a bit.

I can only think of Insua of the most recent ones. Our CL victory was probably also one of the reasons we played there, and we have decent fanbase in Turkey I think.

Of the other top teams only Utd have looked really good. Beating Barcelona yesterday will give them confidence and they look very strong.

Arsenal drew 2-2 with Boca, and have a lot to worry about at the moment.

Chelsea have played some absolute stinkers this pre season, a 0-0 against Malaysia the worst one. Torres has 1 goal in 5-6 games or something.

City havent been setting the world alight eiter, so I dont think we should worry to much about anyone else but ourselves.

I had a feeling the blind faith comment would prompt a bit of a response, which is why I added the "to a point" caveat.

Kenny is a great manager, sure, but he's subject to the same laws of the game as everyone else and even if we've heard nothing from the man himself, he could well be privately voicing similar concerns about our preseason thus far.

Raising concerns doesn't mean you don't rate Kenny or don't believe he knows what he's doing. That shit simply goes without saying.

Furry muff, keni. I don't think we're really disagreeing about anything here - it's more a matter of emphasis really.

Arsenal played New York Red Buls tonight and the game ended 1-1. The Emirates reaction: booing.

Not a good way to prepare for the new season. Booing in pre season itself is a bit ott to be honest.

City beat Inter 3-0. United beat Barcelona. Chelsea haven't conceded a single goal in six matches.

I think we have some serious reasons to be worried by our pre-season so far.

Yeah but Arsenal are still bollocks. To the fourthmobile!

Definitely been off. But, if Kenny starts the new season with the same squad as last, we'll get a few wins 😉, never mind adding new talent.

I really still want another exciting player to sign. A flair winger, or another striker. Too much graft and not enough ingenuity right now IMHO

Hull beat Liverpool 3-0.
They must be good outside bet for a Champions League spot

I remembered a few seasons ago Tottenham was crushing and scoring goals for fun in most of their friendlies. Bent esp was in immense form.

Then the season started. Few games later, manager was sacked. Can't remember who it was. I think it was Juande Ramos.
