Why is he still playing for England?

Every game they are using him for 90 minutes and I feel that this is going to catch up to him towards the end of the season. Glen Johnson too but he is still young. Is it just me or is it really that Stevie plays so much for England, more than other players like Lamps, Terry, Ferdinand although I understand that sometimes they are injured.

I don't think you can expect players to retire from international football as soon as they hit 30.

Yes but he is also captain and playing for them every game 90 minutes. I just think that it will affect his performances for Liverpool layer in the season. He is not 25 anymore.
 
He wants to play because he is captaining his country.

It's also worth pointing out that his performance for both club and country have improved markedly since being handed the armband by Fabio Capello.

People have also noticed him giving more encouragement to the team on the pitch and acting more of a captain in a traditional sense, rather than a maverick Roy of the Rovers character.

All of which leaves me a bit bemused at to what the problem is.
 
You can still expect older players to be protected more though, it's not too much to ask, especially when infront by two goals or more.
 
Yup.

The problem is that he probably likes captaining England, and even a humble request for him to ease off wouldnt go down well.

I'm sure many Liverpool fans would be happier if players placed club interests over national interests; but it is never going to and would never happen with most players.
 
Its probably not the right place to put it, but I'll do it anyhow.

I think its nice to see our captain, bossing games for his country as captain of his country. As long as he does the same for us, and he generally does, then I have no problem with it.

Lets hope Capello sticks with the team he put out for the past couple of games, but starting with Adam Johnson not Walcott. Barry is the perfect foil for Gerrard in that set up and it makes us look fluid - albeit against opposition we should be beating.

England were 2.2 to beat them last night. That was a gift of a price.
 
The fact that he was one of the few singled out as not being a waste of space in SA, Gerrard seems to be enjoying his footy more, it seems to be giving him more confidence, and as a result playing well, perhaps too, as some have said, the England Captaincy is giving him more experience in actually being a captain.

I agree. Having Liverpool players in the England team makes supporting them (or trying to) a lot easier.

Not sure about that. He hasn't been great individually, but in the end what matters is the overall mix and how well (or otherwise) it works. Lampard is a better player than Barry, but there's no way he should get picked ahead of Barry for England if they want (and they should want) to build the team around Stevie G.

Yeah, it's a shame Barry chose City instead of us. He and Gerrard are obviously a good combination.
 
Barry's a quality player. Maybe not as eyecatching in a holding role as Masher, but I always liked him.

I think some of the disdain and slagging he gets from some is linked to the fact that Benitez wanted to replace Alonso with him, and his subsequent move to Shitty.

Plus he did have a quite *wretched* world cup

He was awful, yeah. But he had just come back from injury.

I agree that Barry is a good foil for Gerrard. Because he plays within his limitations. He has no super-star illusions. But to become competitive against the best teams they need a similar but better player.....if i make any sense.

This is the problem with English media. The moment England beats a couple of average opponents, the press starts building up hype. This Barry/Gerrard partnership is still very much untested against top teams. After what i saw of Barry in the world-cup, i remain unconvinced.

I think that in our current situation it's easier to reflect on players we've been linked with in the past and think "what if" because our standards have been well and truly lowered now.

He was playing alongside De Jong or Kompany last season, wasn't he? Hardly the same as Gerrard. I thought 'what if' the moment he signed for City. Well, actually I thought 'fuck you Barry you cunt', but you get the idea.
