Stevie G. to leave Liverpool - Official

It's kinda weird that of all the big moments Gerrard has given us one game that has always stuck in my memory is that early CL qualifier away to TNS.

As I remember it, we were making a meal of things and when Gerrard came on there was immediately this massive gulf in class. Not just between Liverpool and TNS, but between him and everyone else on the pitch. He scored a couple of goals without really trying and put the game to bed.

I think it was the fact that even against such rubbish opposition it still took Gerrard to give us that lift.
He scored a hatrick against TNS and I think he also came off the bench against Napoli and scored two effortless goals. Both stick out for me.

Well it can't be sticking out that much if you "think" he scored 2 effortless goals against Napoli.

As in stick out to me for some reason of Gerrard showing that gulf in class when we came on.

So kinda sneakily poking out a bit rather than full on sticking out?

A semi.... maybe?

Used in the right position he's still one of our best players. I don't know what's happened to make him decide to leave but he will be a loss.
But that's the way it goes and we move on. Hopefully Rodgers can buy a good replacement.

I can't help feeling he's a shadow hanging over the club and we can't move on until he leaves. This heretical thought makes me feel bad but I can't shake it.

I don't know whether to feel worried or excited by his departure. He won't be there to turn to so it'll either be the making or the fading of some of the squad.

I find the whole thing hard to fathom. I know all good things have to come to an end, but I dunno, I'm struggling with this news.

Noticed a bit of an argument break out earlier in the thread about this and I'm sure it wasn't the poster'w intention to compare Gerrard leaving us to a Death because some perspective is needed...but as mental as it is I've had feelings of sheer sadness, guilt and regret thinking back to the times I've criticised Gerrard, anger at the Club for seemingly letting him go.without a fight etc etc. All symptoms you do experience when there's a bereavement.

Just can't shake it. Support the Club not the Player they say, sometimes it's easier said than done. Certainly in my lifetime when Steven Gerrard has been the Club.

Putting aside emotion for a moment I don't think any responsible club can guarantee a 35 year old a starting place and a fat contract.

Add to the mix the fact that Steven says he wants a new experience for himself and his family and that both parties have said he has a future at the club when he wishes to return and I don't get this implied criticism that the club have "let him go without a fight".

What am I missing?

You are missing the fact that in this day and age, former footballers need to justify their prominence by having an opinion that is in some way either more insightful or controversial or just louder than what is actually going on. That's why Alan Shearer, BBC Match of the Day's resident giant sex toy, claimed that, no doubt about it, Liverpool didn't do enough to keep him, despite the fact that he would have been party to precisely 0% of any of the discussions between Steven Gerrard and anyone from Liverpool FC.

Gerrard seems to have a fantastic mental strength. Players at our club always seem to struggle with any form of expectation and shrink into themselves, letting worse teams boss them and only seemingly playing to their best when they're underdogs, Gerrard however seems to break through this, and that's why we see him bossing games like last night, because why the rest of the team can't seemingly realise they're better than Wimbledon, Gerrard can.

Well he wasn't bossing it in the first half, was he? Is this instant rewriting of history going to go on till the end of the season? Of course if one questions this stuff one is damned as a Gerrard critic, but it's just a matter of keeping some perspective.

You're right, he was pretty ominous besides his goals, bossing was more a reference to past games he's single handedly won. The fact he often steps up to the plate and wins us games when the rest of the team is performing rubbish, like last night, is an example of that mental strength he has, he knows how to win games. We'll miss that on occasion when he's gone, but on the other hand, we'll play better as a team when he's gone, so maybe that'll negate that.

Yes, he's a proper professional. I fear we have some real thickoes in the team because they don't seem to learn that from him. Maybe when he leaves they'll finally have to grow up and take up some responsibility, but, as you say, when he does step up and take control it's a different class.

Lovely craftsman:

This is an indignity he shouldn't have to endure. Should've twattted the great fool!

That's the key point, I do believe a lot of our players, Henderson, Coutinho and Sterling particularly, will step up to become the leaders in the team, we'll see.

It's a shame he doesn't have it in him to agree to play from the bench for the next season or two.

That final half hour yesterday showed how his attacking play can change a game.

Yes. I think one of Rodgers' biggest errors of judgement so far was to rest him for the Real Madrid away game. Players like him can probably take being rested for minor games - they might even welcome it - but they want to play in all the big games. I doubt Rodgers meant to send out a message to Gerrard but I bet that stuck in his mind.

b-rodge lost his fucking mind with that game. was embarassing

so stevie is now saying he would have signed if the offer had been in pre season and not november

bit daft really , principles

I think it's all beginning to sound like Gerrard took a huff over being told he'd have restricted playing time in future.

It's all a bit unfortunate.

Interesting point about the Madrid game.

It's sounding like this hasn't really been handled too well. Not like Liverpool that, eh?

I wanted him to retire here and accept a squad role but I think his departure is probably for the best. It would've been easier in a team like Utd or Chelsea where there is enough success and big names allow him to step down but with the team we've got the spotlight would remain on Gerrard. This a new, young team and it needs a new identity.

Just about the one thing you'd expect of American owners is a smooth-running PR machine but they're fecking shite at it.
