I died inside after reading that statement. Gutted.
There will be tears on the 15th May.

Liverpool Football Club can confirm Steven Gerrard is to leave the club at the end of the 2014-15 season.

The Reds captain will bring the curtain down on a glittering Anfield career that has spanned nearly 17 years and included 10 trophies, as well as 695 appearances and 180 goals to date since joining the club's youth system aged eight.the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. No decision on his new club has been made yet, but he will continue his career outside the United Kingdom and at a side that will not bring him into direct competition with Liverpool.

The 34-year-old admits it is with a heavy heart he will depart Liverpool, describing the decision as the 'toughest of his life', but has chosen to make it now to avoid speculation about his future.

Until then, the No.8 insists he will continue to concentrate all his efforts on helping Brendan Rodgers' side achieve both domestic and European success.

Explaining his decision, Gerrard said: "This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time.
"I am making the announcement now so that the manager and the team are not distracted by stories or speculation about my future.

"Liverpool Football Club has been such a huge part of all our lives for so long and saying goodbye is going to be difficult, but I feel it's something that's in the best interests of all involved, including my family and the club itself.

"I'm going to carry on playing and although I can't confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won't be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool - that is something I could never contemplate.

"My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over.

"I can't thank Brendan, the owners and everyone at the club enough for how they've handled this and I am leaving on great terms. Also, I would like to thank my teammates and all the staff for their help and continued support.

"It is a very special place to be part of. It is my sincere hope and wish that one day I can return to serve Liverpool again, in whatever capacity best helps the club.

"One point that is important to make is that from now until the last kick of the last game of the season, I will be as fully committed to the team as I ever have been and giving everything I have to help Liverpool win games.

"My final message is for the people who make Liverpool Football Club the greatest in the world - the supporters.
"It has been a privilege to represent you, as a player and as captain. I have cherished every second of it and it is my sincere wish to finish this season and my Liverpool career on a high."

We are going to have a very young dressing room next season (depending on how gets purchased) if we consider that Johnson will also be leaving.

My biggest worry is who the academy kids will look up to - obviously we have Sterling & Sturridge but will we really have anyone that the youngsters will look up to?

Maybe it's an age thing but I've been here before with great players. As far as I'm concerned it's the King is dead long live the King.

Steven deserves all the plaudits he will get. He has been inspirational but I expect he will be thinking about the best thing for the club as well as himself and, in my opinion, has made the right decision.

Good luck to him and I hope he returns in due course.

Go and win the Europa League for him I suppose. He deserves another decent European night that man.

Couldn't agree more. One of the many greats to have worn the red jersey. Will be missed, but time is right. Hate it when folk don't give him the credit he deserves when they compare him to Keane, Scholes, Lampard, Vieira. They were all great players surrounded by other great players. Stevie was a great, often surrounded by average players. He carried the club so often to success. Shame the premiership eluded him.

I'd like to Vault this thread eventually..

Let fill this thread with some of his best moments in a Red Shirt.. A tribute to the Legend

What a hit son.

Its pretty much the ultimate Goal/Situational/accompanying commentary goal there ever was.

He used to move with such power and strike balls like and the Boro' one with such composure, accuracy and venom. Its been a while since jes treated us to one, I hope can pull one more rabbit out of the hat

I wonder if we'll ever have a midfielder worthy of the No. 8 shirt. Controversial if someone gets it next season, bordering on too soon!

He deserves all the plaudits that will come his way, he has carried Liverpool on his own for the most part of his career.

What a player.

I'm completely deflated by this, Liverpool is the only sport related thing I've ever really been passionate about, and Gerrard has been focal to that since I was 10, I've been one of the ones wanting to see him rested, but seeing him go is just devastating.

I'm kinda not gutted.

I mean, if anyone deserved the right to decide his own destiny, it's Gerrard, and who could argue with him.

A pity he didn't settle for a reduced playing role like Scholes & Giggs in their final years, but probably wasn't his style.

I'm actually quietly happy that it's happened before a bitter taste could be left.

Oh well - onwards and upwards I guess - it'll he strange not seeing Gerrard in the lineup next year.

Thanks for all of the glorious memories Stevie!

I'm not sad about this at all though TBH. As long as I remain a Liverpool fan i'll always miss the player he was, but It's in everyones best interests that he leaves as far as i'm concerned. Thgis Liverpool team needs to find it's own identity now.
