Steven Caulker

It's a curious one isn't it? I can't even begin to imagine the conversation that took place between whoever thought this deal up and whoever then made it happen (I'm avoiding the 'committee' word). "So we need some CB cover. Hmmm. Who could we bring in?" "I know, how about that lad who is already out on loan to Southampton?" I mean where in the hell did they conjure this up from?

I like that Klopp prioritizes heading ability for CBs (his line of thinking is – we play pressing game > opponents then have to play long balls to escape the press > hence you need aerially dominant CBs). This is something that should have been addressed by many previous managers since Sami Hyypia left, but for various reasons was not. Shorter players who like to keep the ball on the ground are very much in vogue in the modern game, but that means it's even more imperative to make sure your CBs can dominate the air against long balls, crosses, free-kicks and corners, which has been our persistent weakness for years.

Caulker is a stop-gap solution (unless he somehow turns his career around working with Klopp, which is improbable, but not impossible), but if we can sign a pre-contract agreement with Joel Matip as soon as possible, I'll feel a lot more confidence about the state of our defense for next season.

If they wanted some husk of a professional who commanded zero fee and was immediately available for a two week suicide mission, I'm guessing they just looked at their transfer wishlist from a couple of summers ago.

Didn't expect this one at all. But, makes sense on a loan basis i guess. He can provide plenty of cover for injuries and maybe step in when rotation is needed, but he's surely fourth choice, so I'd hope for better in the summer.

You may very well be right.

Well, given the madness of our recent signings, I'd want Klopp to think really carefully about which players he wants. I heard some idiot on the radio moaning about Caulker as if he was the worst player on the planet. The point is: what really good CB is currently available either on loan or to sign outright? There'll be a few in the summer, but I'm not aware of any now who'd genuinely be worth getting in January. Maybe others know of some.

Gomez, presumably, is regarded as a future CB for us, plus either Sakho or Lovren on the books. So we'd need one more, probably under 25 if FSG get their way? That's not something to rush into (again).

What I'm hoping is that Klopp has a few really top class targets in mind for the summer. If this loan signing means Enrique won't get another game, it's fine by me.

Recommendation from Alex Inglethorpe?
2013:
[article]I managed him at Tottenham and sent him out on loan to Yeovil Town and then again to Bristol City. After those 80 or so games, he had learned his trade in a professional environment and therefore earned himself a loan deal to Brendan's Premier League Swansea.[/article]

Interesting. Seeing as he seemed to lose his way a bit after that, maybe Inglethorpe can help him focus again.

It seems a very pragmatic signing given that by all accounts, Klopp's first choices of Matip and Subtonic weren't available.

We can't really lose unless he does a Bogdan when he plays. He's got Premier League experience at centre back and (on paper) will be better than our current options. If he's crap, we'll have some of our normal centre halves back before too long and he can then rot on the bench til the end of the season.

That's what I find so bizarre. Our first and second choices weren't available so we went straight to our 39th.

I reckon that beyond those 2, he wasn't too arsed.

He seemingly wants Matip for the long term, and Subotic was next best as a loan only. Besides that, he's probably prepared to wait till the summer for Matip and so there's no better option readily available on a loan.

That said, I see Vidic has been released from his contract at Inter. I'd have had him although I doubt he'd sign.

Yes, because we can still, hopefully, sign our first choice in the summer and having the 39th choice on loan for 6 months doesn't complicate that in any way, unlike overpaying to permanently sign your 4-5 choice mid-season.

Happy enough with this all things considered.

A few years ago he had bags of potential and I have a feeling he will grab this career lifeline with both hands and if he doesn't we will have our other Cb's back in a couple of weeks

At least now Lucas can concentrate on controlling our midfield and making us tick.

But Dreamy, when Can, Henderson and Milner are all fit, Lucas doesn't play. He was dropped as soon as those three were available. Correctly

I'm in, but then I always am ultra positive about newbies, until I grow to hate them. He ticks all the right boxes for me though, he's an underdog and I always champion the unfashionable player. Most of them anyway.

Ha I didn't expect you of all people to bite.
That last line was tongue in cheek.

I was never a fan of Lucas and have stated a number of times over the years we need better to really compete on a regular basis for the title. He has however for the most part been good to excellent this season but by me saying that it's suddenly turned me into a Lucas fan boy.

I didn't really 'bite' though, come on.
