Steven Caulker

Southampton fans think he's shit, and he was in QPR's backline that was shipping goals for fun and got relegated (he also played in the 1-6 defeat at St Mary's which he was mainly blamed for).

Given our defensive crisis, not much more we could've done though. Don't think there's much more to read into this but us signing some experienced PL cover.

Tbf I don't think you can 'mainly blame' one player for your side conceding six goals in one game.

There needs to be a whole lot more going wrong to manage that feat.

No, but there seems to be a lot of correlation between defences leaking a lot of goals and him playing. The fact that Southampton were delighted to let him leave says a bit too.

I'm not expecting much, we had to bring someone in and we have. I'll be at the game tomorrow wanting him to be epic of course.

All for giving players a chance but really not too inspired by this albeit we had to do something given the defensive injury crisis.
Caulker's been pretty shit whenever I've seen him for Cardiff/QPR/S'ton last few years.

I do know he was quite high rated when he first broke through at Spurs(begs the question why did they let him go then), and was playing for England U21's.

Have to wait and see I guess. Lets hope he surprises us all.

Manny would have been a good cover for Clyne this season. It was just a loan signing, zero risk but we sent the only backup RB away.

Well, we did land Joe Gomez though, who'd have filled in at RB. And then Flanagan would've returned around Christmas after his surgery (initial prognosis), so we'd have had two guys before and three after Christmas. Rodgers gave Maguire, Randall and Cleary run outs at RB in pre-season so I think the idea was to see how they did and plan for them to be the 3rd or 4th string guy.

Then boom boom - Gomez went down and Flanagan took a while more to return and we're left with Clyne being backed up by Randall. 1st to 4th choice at the blink of an eye.

ps. And then of course, in Rodgers' mind, Can was also an emergency backup RB he could turn to. Yikes! 😀

Not sure why Manny was suddenly drop down the pecking order, BR even had Ibe, Markovic played the RWB role, ahead of Manny. IMO he's more reliable than Moreno at that time.

Think I read he had a terrible attitude to training, his fitness stank and was completely hopeless going forward so once we switched to 3 at the back and wingbacks he was obsolete

I'd prefer Wisdom be given a chance but this is obviously a tactical decision.

If my memory serves me right...Caulker is quite a threat on corners.

I find loans for players under the age of 27 strange. A clause to buy would make some sense.. without a clause If he's successful he goes back to QPR and we are back to square one.

Unless the team is LFC in which case Lucas is entirely to blame, obviously ....

I have vague memories of him being responsible for Sturridges goals in that game at minimum.

He was clearly not on the same page as the rest of the Southampton defence.

He's just a body, another number in the squad at a time of crisis If he he plays like anything more than that I'll be delighted.

I dunno mate - I am oddly optimistic. He's barely had a chance at Soton (rightly so, Virgil + Fonte have been an excellent CB pairing) and I think he'll probably take this as a lottery win ... The opportunity to take his game to the next level and play at a top level club. Hopefully he'll make the most out of it.

I take a different view on it. I think it is brilliant that we have signed Caulker, if only for the fact that the club now seem willing to wait for their first choice targets rather than panic buy. Caulker will make up the numbers until summer, then he'll return to his parent while Matip (if reports are correct) takes his place in the squad.

He's a stop gap. He's taking a squad position while we wait for a first teamer. That's not going back to square one, it's a very definite step forward.

Exactly, with a potential upside that Caulker does himself justice and gives us something to think about.

If he is a stopgap do we know if they tried to recall Wisdom like they did with Ward and others. He only signed a new contract at the atart of the season.

It'd be nice to get a stopgap that actually turned out to be one. Most of them tend to stay on our books for years and cost us a small fortune.

How do you know the club hasn't tried to recall Wisdom? Klopp has already said he can't recall Markovic, how do you know that Wisdom's loan deal is different?

Besides, he's made 11 appearances for Norwich so far, perhaps the club think it's best that he stays there and plays rather than filling in for a bit for Liverpool before having his place filled by Lovren/Sakho/Skrtl.
