Sterling to Tell Rodgers he wants to leave this summer

People getting a bit worked up here. He’s one of our very few potentially world class players, and we’re all happy to let him leave cos he wants more money.

I’m glad we’ve evidently got zero ambitions to be a side that competes for the title anymore due to not wanting to have to deal with pampered, self-indulged greedy footballers. Rooney, Roy Keane, Yaya Toure, Ronaldo, Van Persie, Vieira, I could go on for days.

They all used their agent to feed stories through the press claiming they’d leave if they didn’t get the $$ they wanted, or if the club didn’t match their ambitions. Remember the United fans booing Rooney cos he threatened to go to Man City? Now look at them.

So Sterling’s got a pain in the arse agent? He wants loads of money? He wants to play in the big games? THEY ALL FUCKING WANT THAT. If we let this kid go, it just shows us up to be some small-time, petty bunch of losers who can’t handle ego’s. This will happen again and again and again. You’ve got to find a way of dealing with players like this, and managing them effectively. Be firm, and show some fucking balls for once.

And as supporters, we have to find a way of dealing with it too. Cos this is modern day football. 20 year old kids who’ve achieved fuck all demanding the world. It happens at every single club.

Only the big clubs deal with it, and still come out on top.

Wasn't it only a few months ago that Ayre was gloating about this revolutionary incentive based contract system which LFC have developed. The Henderson and Sterling saga started pronto. The only thing the club has become really good at is winning the PR war and getting the fans on their side in such sagas. I guess practise is making them perfect at that.

Sterling has been a greedy ill advised twat. Truth is almost all talented modern players are that way. They will find creative ways to not be at Anfield if we don't perform at the highest level. As somebody else on this forum pointed out, everything about our club starting from Ayre down to coaching screams meh at the moment. Unless that changes and we start competing at the highest level, we can expect more and more of this.

Again, his oh-so innocent side has briefed his favourite hacks way before we've been able to respond. And this is when we supposedly have hard-nosed US people working for us. Only we could get hard-nosed American PR people who are softer and less competent than a couple of cockney twats in a caravan somewhere in Camberwell. Well done again, FSG.

This is their belated response, after Ayre woke up covered in crisps and roused himself into action, via Barrett:

Raheem Sterling’s representatives are to hold showdown talks with Liverpool this week amid growing fears over his future, with Manchester City ready to move should the winger ask to leave Anfield.

Contract negotiations between the two parties have been on hold since February when Sterling rejected a new deal worth £100,000 per week. The intention was for discussions to resume at the end of this season but at the request of Sterling’s agent, Aidy Ward, a meeting will now take place on Friday.

During the three months since talks took place, the respective positions of player and club have become increasingly entrenched. While Liverpool insist that they will not allow Sterling to leave this summer and will hold him to his existing £35,000-per-week contract if he fails to sign a new deal, the England forward’s camp has continued to agitate for a move.

Liverpool, though, have always maintained that a compromise is not out of the question and hope that the face-to-face meeting will give both sides an opportunity to clear the air and start afresh. Having agreed a new contract with Jordan Henderson, the club are looking to do the same with Sterling, although the strong likelihood is that they would have to increase their last offer significantly for that even to be considered.

Regardless of City’s interest, Liverpool have yet to receive any offers for the 20-year-old and insist they would reject a bid if one is forthcoming. Sterling has two years left on his present deal and although Liverpool recognise that selling him would be unavoidable next summer if a new contract is not agreed, they do not see any value in sanctioning his sale in the forthcoming transfer window.

That stance was reflected in Liverpool’s recent decision not to follow up their interest in Memphis Depay, the PSV Eindhoven winger, who is on the verge of completing a £25 million transfer to Manchester United. The combination of Daniel Sturridge’s continuing recovery from hip surgery and Liverpool’s determination to retain Sterling meant they viewed the acquisition of a proven centre forward as their main priority and they pulled out of the race to sign Depay as a result.

The possibility remains that Ward could upset Liverpool’s plans by informing them of his client’s desire to leave or even to notify them that City are ready to lodge a formal bid. Such an approach would test Liverpool’s resolve to keep a player who has become an increasingly unpopular figure with the club’s supporters while the stand-off has continued.

Steven Gerrard has urged Sterling to commit his future to Liverpool, advising him that Brendan Rodgers is the best manager to guide him at this stage of his career, but throughout this process Sterling’s camp resisted whatever pressure they have come under to sign a new contract.

I don't particularly like him either. But we're not really in a position of being able to shoo our great young kids out the door just to make a point are we?
I don't think he's particularly brilliant mate, never have. And I get your point about young footballers but the way he's acted stinks to high heaven. He's a bad egg who I'd rather not see at our club.

And I'm sure you took a similar stance as me when Suarez, a player with infinitely more talent than this little gimp did the same thing.

Er none of the players you cited were 20 year old kids with plenty of weaknesses. They were all superstars.

Care to give a relevant example?

Moley on Twitter..

Ben Smith said that it's been suggested that Sterling may have signed a new deal if there was a new manager (suggested by who Ben ? )

Sometimes I wish we still had a vindictive and petty cunt of a boss like Houllier, who would not think twice about ruining the ungrateful little cunt's career.

Gym sessions twice a day, regular fines of 1 week wages, no ball work for two years, daily drug tests, sharing hotel rooms with Enrique, Rodgers could have such an ace time with this.

This is why I'm glad of the Jon Flanagan's of this world.
Will never break our hearts.

Er no. You know the point that's been made, and what age the kid is/was is largely irrelevent. Top players are always agitating for moves, money, and promises. Sterling's one of those, so I'm not overly bothered whether he's 20 or 25.

I think the quality of our players has diminished so much that we've debased our understanding of what a truly good player is. Talking about not losing him because he's one of our top scorers. That's ignoring the elephant in the room.

I think a lot of the hype around Sterling is a bit misleading. So much is based on what he's achieved *for his age*. But a lot of that is down to unique circumstances as much as his talent. He was just becoming ready for a debut at pretty much our weakest ever point in terms of first team wingers. He got his chance and did pretty well but then faded. By the time he came back in to the team we were absolutely flying and the kid had three amazing attackers (and yet no competition for his place!) around him to really let him flourish.

In reality I don't think his first 20 odd games for us were as impressive as Ibe's. But he's had pretty much impeccable timing.

When people talk about him being one of the best 20 year olds in Europe, they think that means he'll very likely develop into one its best players. But not many of the players who will have such incredible opportunities when they're 17 or 18, and hence experience when they're 19 and 20.

I don't particularly know what the point is tbh. We bent over to keep Suarez, so we did what you're saying we should do. The problem is Sterling isn't remotely at that level. And I disagree that players at his stage generally act like that. I think he's atypically cuntish tbh.
