Spunk the Alonso Cash

In a lacklustre competition which nobody really gives a fuck about. And they also defeated Spain - what's that prove?

I don't watch much of the Italian national team, but I doubt their midfield is getting "dicked on time & time again".

What about Moutinho.

Is he not supposed to be half decent?

So that means Lucas will play 25+ league games, as Aquilani averages about 13ish.

Great player, horrilble injury record.
As a Roma fan I know said, he's aaaaaalways injured.

I don't either, but Serie A isn't much known for it's pool of talented players nowadays too are they? Plus our last Italian purchase pis enough to make me shudder.

I'll say it one more time, Pirlo is the best replacement for Xabi.
20M was the fee bandied about when Chelsea were supposedly interest. Since then, it has been suggested that he'll stay at Milan, but either way, paying anything near that for a player the wrong side of 30 would be silly.

20m for Pirlo is obviously a bit steep, but at 30 he's not the type of player (doesn't rely on pace/dynamism) who's likely to deteriorate hugely over the next 4 years or so. If Xabi's worth 35m I'd pay half of that for Pirlo.

He might be two and a bit years older than Xabi, but he's certainly his equal with regards to talent (if not more) and playing style. He'd be perfect alongside Masher. Pirlo to sit deep dictating play whilst Masher does his dynamo thing.

Hamsik is the only player in italy that interests me.

the rest like De Rossi are not good enough, they get dicked on time and time again at international or CL level.
That's an odd post Rebel. De rossi and the 'rest' deemed not good enough? Yet Hamsik is? I'm not saying Hamsik isn't a good player, I haven't seen enough of him to judge but what has he done at CL or at international level to prove he is good enough?

20.42 Reports in Italy claim Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is lining up AC Milan's ex-Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini as a possible replacement for either Javier Mascherano or Xabi Alonso, who have both been linked with moves to Spain.

Flamini would be an astute piece of business if he is bought on the cheap.

He was superb that season before he left for Italy.

I'm still waiting to get excited by a transfer though.

I would love us to be in for Flamini... especially if the fee is in the neighbourhood of the rumoured £7.5 million.

would have preferred him on a free last summer.

Flamini could only be a replacement for Masher though. A midfield consisting of both him and Masher would carry all the attacking threat of a feather boa. Would he come here to sit on the bench?

I think Flamini and Mascher would offer more attacking threat than Xabi and Mascher

I think that's a bizarre statement.

Flamini was distinctly average until Wenger moved him to defensive midfield. Why? Because he's a very basic and unspectacular player. He does all the simple things well, which is why he (finally) found his nische playing as a defensive midfielder. He simply has to break up the play and pass it to someone who's better than him at doing the more complicated stuff. While Alonso's won't go banging in the goals like Stevie, his vision and passing range alone make him much more of an attacking threat than Flamini. Not to mention the fact that he dictates the play in a way Flamini never could.

100% agree.

Yes flamini is faster than alonso and will get forward a *little* more, but certainly no more of a threat. Xabi's passing and vision itself would offer more of an attacking threat.

Scott Parker would be a very good option.

Is this a joke?

I like Flamini

Arsenal were foolish to lose him. Fabregas hasn't looked half the player since.

Oncy will be pleased

I doubt many others will be given his injury record.

If we're looking to play the same system and fund a direct replacement for Alonso, Aquilani would definitely be on my list.

Me too. He really looked the part (and scored a few goals) in his last season at Arsenal.

He'd also feel he's got plenty to prove after his time at Milan. For 7.5m he'd be an absolute fucking bargain at only 25 years old.

I hope we can keep a handle on all these 'Xabi's replacement' threads. There's another one down there about Sneijder and 22m that should be merged into this.

Good heavens, if I thought we could get rid of an unhappy Xabi and Mascher, replace them with Flamini and Sneijder and have 40m left over to add to whatever funds we already have and buy a couple of A list attackers, I'd be rather tempted.

We could potentially have 60m+ to blow on two or three exotic attackers or shockingly ugly German one.
