Deserves it's own thread I would have thought.
I suspect there will be lots to talk about.

Holy team selection Batman! Sturridge and Balotelli on the bench!!
Edit: And Moreno!!!!!
Edit2: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Southampton: Forster, Clyne, Yoshida, Fonte, S. Davis, Wanyama, Djuričić, Ward-Prowse, Pellè, Elia, Targett.

Substitutes: K. Davis, Schneiderlin, Gardos, Long, Mané, Tadić, Reed.

Would someone like to take a stab at explaining our attacking strategy today?

Is it possibly that both Sturridge and Balotelli are being punished?

Looks like Rodgers is going for maximum ball control at the expense of the cutting edge. All the tidy, pass-happy players we have in the squad are on the pitch. Cutting edge in the form of Sturridge and Balotelli will be introduced in the last half-hour.

Coutinho, Ibe, Lazar, Sterling, Lallana all on the pitch at once has potential to be rather special if they can work in tandem successfully.

Rodgers will only have himself to blame if we don't win today with this lineup and we don't make top four because of it.

As far as I can work out:

When we get the ball our 7 attacking midfielders will simultaneously make off the ball runs drawing defenders out of position until mignolet strolls up the pitch to score completely unnoticed.

This team smacks of unnecessary smartarsery to me.

Yes and no imho. Balotelli deserves a start but you'd lose the pressing ability.

Sterling, Coutinho and Lallana will press like mad.
Sakho injured. Markovic has been good on the left before and Moreno has played a lot of footy lately.

Come on Redmen! Need the 3 points!

I think I understand the thinking behind it but whether it will work is another matter.

We have Sturridge and Balotelli to come on if it goes pear shape.

Our pace is very scary though, and we do have all our best available pressing players on the pitch. I think we'll be looking to press and harry the shit out of them in the middle and out wide, and then try to hit them with a blistering counter off the ball possession we win. Then bring on Sturridge and Balotelli in the second half to work on tired legs.

We'll probably be able to force them to cough up the ball a fair bit (Djuricic is new to the league, as is Elia) - just hope we can finish any chances we get on the break though. On paper, our unit of attacking mids and CMs is stronger, so hopefully we can create enough chances and bang at least one in until Sturridge comes on.

well that is a good view...that also means we wont really try to dominate the midfield. That is good thing for us because their midfield will dominate imo

I never felt Balotelli deserved a start yet despite an upturn in form, to be honest. He's just too unpredictable and right now, I wouldn't trust him yet to be focused and committed right from the starting whistle. Keeping him as an impact player off the bench in his current form works well for us in my opinion.
