So pace,...

Yes because Walcott and ox are slow??
No surprise they are struggling with 1 or 2 of them out

If you think the Chelsea team that smashed city on the break, which is the same team that let mata go because he slows counter attacks up too much with to many touches hasn't hot lightening pace your daft or being a prick.

Which is it today Ryan?

The Chelsea article talked about different types of "Pace". Teams that move the ball at pace are considered to have 'pace', am I right.

All premier league players are reasonably pacey.

I don't really see it as being as important as skill, touch or speed of thought. That probably buys you more time than pace. In fact, I don't even think Suarez or Countinho have much more pace than the average PL striker.
Obviously if you below average that can hurt you.

It is a huge weapon when counter attacking though.
Put Sturridge through and nobody catches him. Same with Torres, same with Owen.
All three of them have/had great movement as well as finishing ability, which again is essential but as we saw with Owen and Torres, pace really was the difference between them being one of the best in europe to being also rans.

Don't know why it's an either/or for some people.

I might be wrong but sometimes it seems that that a lot of counter attacking is anticipation, positioning and balance.

Sturridge's goal.

He got there first because he timed his run perfectly. He had burst ahead on Koscielny's blind side when he was still looking which way the the ball was headed. You can see that when Koscielny starts bursting Sturridge is already ahead. There is also balance. Sturridge doesn't have to check his run to shoot. He just moves his body into shape just as he gets to the ball. In fact he managed to get the ball from his right onto his left foot by moving over the ball. He already knows where he wants to place the shot. And his head is up so he sees the keeper. Decisive. This is also something that Torres did very well.

Of course he has pace but is he faster than Agbonlahor, Carlton Cole or Ngog? I'm not so sure.

Excellent post.

Not faster than Agboneawhore, but I strongly suspect he's quicker than the other two, Cole especially.

Good post though.

Us and Villa are two great examples of this argument. Villa say that whilst pace can be deadly, it can only get you so far, we say that when applied to very intelligent and creative play, pace can make you lethal.
