...Benitez isn't going anywhere this season (which seems pretty likely) and this rumoured £60M is made available.

Who might/should we sign and what then would our line-up look like next season?

I'm all about low risk this summer and would favour premiership signings. I'd bid for Young, Milner, Bent and Bale

...or merge it into the other one...

I think if Benitez is staying, the first thing he needs for his own system is a new Alonso - and the player has to be an exact fit and be hot shit.

After that we need another striker that can play alongside of or instead of Torres (when injured). Villa would be great, but there are probably others.

And we need a world class wide man

It's either/or on Young and Milner really. They wouldn't sell both in one summer.

Young, Milner, Bent and Bale would cost 80m

That would be a proper rip-off!

We should change targets if that's the case.

We need one left back, one striker and one winger. One other good CM would be a real bonus. So in terms of the positions to be covered, i think that original list is spot on. But everybody on the forum knows that.....yet again i find myself stating the bleeding obvious.

Hmm..replace Alonso? Can Huddlestone fill that role?

I would just play Gerrard there. He can go one up on Xabi Alonso in that role.

i think i was the only person on here who thought milner would be a good signing for 6 mill when we were linked. young gave me downing syndrome when we were first linked, though.

Would definitely take Milner and Bent, then I'd probably send Aquilani back to Italy (Yeah I do rate him, but what's the point?) and buy Martinez or whoever.

This isn't likely to become a permanent fixture though, because Rafa is mental.

Is there another option? Is there a suitable Alonso replacement out there?

where's the rumoured 60 mill from?

I don't really understand where, but it's in the press

I started a thread on it if I'm not mistaken.

that was 2 years ago to be fair. He was no where near as good at that point as he is now. I'm sure someone will have known he'd come good, but I certainly didn't expect quite so much from him.

He wasn't that bad then either, and I certainly supported going in for him in other threads. Don't think anybody, even those of us who rated him, expected him to make this much progress though.

Lets just sign David Villa.

He will definitely be available, and we can get that fucking saga over and done with once and for all.

I liked Milner but didn't think he'd get this good, especially not this soon.

Am I the only one who doesn't really want Villa?

Interesting- nobody liked him much, apart from Buddah, who thought he should be a fullback:

Just to clarify, I'm not advocating we go and buy Milner purely for the sake of experimenting with him immediately at right-back. More that he strikes me as potentially the type of player who might benefit from experimentation in that role, much as Finnan, Alves and Zhirkov have (as well as countless other winger-turned-fullbacks have over the years).

He strikes me as having many of the attributes of a potentially top-class attacking fullback - the only unknown is his defensive positional sense.

Bearing all that in mind I won't be as distraught as many on here should we pay 7m for him, as he's also a very good winger with room for improvement. Of course I'd prefer Silva or Arshavin for the winger role, but if we have to settle for Milner he might just prove a shrewd buy in the long-term.

Not sure, but I'd take him in a NY minute. What's your problem with him?
[/quote]

I worry about his ability to settle in this league, am not convinced about his partnership with Torres, think he's a bit lightweight, and think his transfer fee is likely to be astronomical.

I wouldn't part with 30 M+ GBP for him and would be concerned about > 20 M.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's an excellent player and is well suited for the league he is in. I'm well aware I could be horrifically wrong and he might take to England like Torres did but I'm a bit sceptical.

(Obv, if the choices were N'Gog or Villa, I would choose the latter. Should go without saying.)

Understood, and there's always a risk involved in any transfer, but I wouldn't really share those concerns. I think his game would be well suited to the Prem (we were also linked with him at the time we signed Torres, and I for one thought Villa would be better suited here), plus his partnership with Torres for Spain is mustard, so we know they can play together well.

The price would need hard negotiation though. £30 mill.would certainly be out of the question.
