Spearing and Lucas have performed admirably over the last couple of months. But it's too much for them to ask to get the better of a three man midfield with players of the quality of Vdv and Modric. Had Meireles been fit (or even Shelvey been played in his place), this would have been a different game.

He picked some nice passes but he also sent many astray. I'm not blaming him for our loss as we needed a midfield 3 today. I'd still rather jonjo start instead of him though.

I don't think so. I've been bigging up Jonjo all season, but I was really disappointed when he replaced Spearing. The fact of the matter is that both Lucas and Spearing are fairly limited players, but as part of a functional three man midfield, they do end performing their roles really well. Spearing ran his gut out today, and tried his best spraying the ball around. That didn't need replacing. It just needed a third and willing runner and it would've changed the game significantly.
I don't think anyone would say that Lucas and Spearing are good enough in the long run (to be Liverpool starting material). But when they're the only available resources, it's imperative we utilise their strengths. And we didn't today.

Oh I agree. Tactics were a fault today, but it shows in bright light to the people who say spearing should replace lucas that he gets found out when he hasn't got people covering for him. You could argue the same for lucas though I guess

Maxi is best pals with Suarez & Lucas ... and he's a capable squad player, who is happy to come off the bench. It would be lunacy to sell him, especially if Kun Aguero is our #1 target.

No, we want to keep him because his current form shows what he's capable of. The diving I agree is infuriating, but unlike you I don't see that as a good enough reason to naff off a decent squad option.

Is that really an answer though? He was absolutely fantastic and if we were prepared to play a role with more harrying and 60 yard balls than standing up top waiting i think he could still have 3 or 4 years. I suppose it all depends on his legs and how far he can go.
