I don't think he posts anything apart from these effete, rubbish little slapdown attempts.

I haven't had anyone follow me about like this since the halcyon days of Fox et al, when there was my own little coterie of fans traipsing around after me being outraged and stuff.

It's a bit rich for someone like Brendan to post shit like this when he NEVER posts anything apart from his own effete, rubbish little slapdown attempts on Lucas.

Seriously Lucas is a good player and he's OUR player. I don't understand what the obsession with him is. There isn't one sliver of actual argument on this thread against him just a whole load of lynchuing and self-congratulation on 'oh I knew he was bad. clever me'

haha, the gauntlet has been thrown, the swords are readied....

Why bother?

It's one of the most boring features of this forum.

Hi Caparo, welcome to SCM.
If you have been following the site for a while you will understand that you will be branded a mentalist and that most people will think you are Momo/Blackie etc etc.

If you are Momo, you're mask will slip (it always does) and you will be banned. If not, and you are a new poster than ride the torrent of abuse that will come your way and enjoy posting regularly on the forum.

There's some merit to your point that there is some repetition regarding opinions about him; but what do you base this on?

He's a shit player promoted too high, and he's only our player with regret.

Even for a 6M squad player, I'd expect far more than another average tackle, another sideways pass, or another anonymous performance. It may not be his fault - granted, but make no mistake, a lot of our current problems start and end with his lack of ability.

Momo, in most of his guises, usually posts in quite a vituperative fashion regarding Lucas, he hates him with a passion

Yeah, he's the reason we're so shit at defending set pieces, as well as conceding late goals.

Laughable.

I don't think he's the whole problem, but he's undoubtedly part of it. Bearing in mind that he's playing in Alonso's role from last season, the lack of any serious creative bite in his play (a) leaves us short up front and, as a direct consequence, (b) allows the opposition put extra pressure on us at the back. He does his best, and the main fault is Rafa's for picking him rather than putting Gerrard back there as he should have been doing all season, but none of that alters the fact that Lucas isn't up to the job.

Not really.

We played wonderfully well against a few top teams without Alonso in past seasons. Lucas is nowhere near good enough to start for Liverpool, but to blame him for our defensive frailties is just a bit idiotic.

On occasion we played well without him but mostly we played a very similar style of football that we play now, if you can call it football that is.

Lucas isn't our biggest problem, but his inclusion in the team isn't helping us.

It all comes back to Rafa at the end of the day, he bought all the defenders (bar Carragher) that are at the club and he brought in Pellegrino as defensive coach.

We trashed United and beat Inter away without Alonso.

Yeah we did, but if you go back and watch all the games that we played without Alonso you'll find more often than not the side lacked cohesion, movement and resorted to long balls frequently. Which is pretty much exactly what we're like now.

Alonso was the key to Rafa's system, but we don't seem to have noticed that just yet and keep trying the same things in the hope that one day they'll give us a different result to the previous 30 games or however many we've already played this season.

For the Lucas is good gang, how come since he has become an integral part of our midfield have we lacked any sort of control in matches and have rarely bossed midfields this season?

That's the key word bolded right there. Winning a couple of games (however important they are individually) is fine, but winning enough of them to challenge for the title is another matter. We were also without Torres and/or Gerrard for some notable victories. I hope nobody's going to try to suggest that means they too are dispensable.

Hey, I said for the Lucas is good gang!!!

I think Masher and Lucas have both looked better separately when alongside someone more positive, like Gerrard, Aquilani or Alonso. There are games when they've worked together, like against United a couple of times, but by and large neither look to take the initiative and control the midfield in terms of tempo and being the 'playmaker'. That's the fault of neither of them.

They're essentially doing the same job in midfield, so as said Lucas would ideally be back up to Mascherano, it's not his fault he's picked in there each week, being inexperienced, playing an unnatural role (to the one he played in Brazil) and hardly ever having someone there who compliments him.

What happened after we played and got twatted by Pompey? Masher got suspended and Aquilani came in alongside Lucas. In the league we beat Wolves and Villa on the bounce. Coincidental? Maybe we just looked a bit better having two players in the middle who actually complimented each other?

"Grazie, Lucas amico mio, your tackling is looking really sharp today."

Eyethangyew.

Mark has a good point actually. I'd take it one step further and say that that kind of combo would have been available to us all season if Gerrard had been deployed back there instead of Senhor Leiva. Why Purple hasn't been used more often since he regained fitness is something we have yet to hear explained.

lol.. Very good JJ 😉

I'm not saying he should be in there, I don't think he's as bad as made out and could be an able deputy for Masher, those two results at least showed that we could play better without the need for two DM's.
