He was better than Mascherano yesterday that's for fucking sure.

Still, threads like this from Brendan are so utterly predictable. Not a fucking clue what's happening on the pitch, why we're not scoring, what our tactics actually are, how they changed through the course of the game, etc etc... Just the same post-game 'Lucas is a cunt' diatribe, cos he hasn't got a fucking clue. Every game the same insight; 'Lucas and Insua are shit, and cunts'.

That's it. That's all there ever is.

"I knew Slosemi was shit first!"

Fuck. Up.

Ryan i dont usually mind Lucas but he was terrible yesterday.. what makes it worse is the fact we have Aquilani on the bench who would improve us greatly. Mascherano didnt have the best of games but was still one of the better performers.

How many chances did Lucas create?
[/quote]

I can think of two off the top of my head actually, when he played in Gerrard on the left hand side of the box, for what should have been a clear shot on goal, and the cut back from the by-line on the left.

Criticise away, but that post is just typical of this thread and what Ryan said regarding watching the game, suggesting he created nothing is factually wrong. People make their mind up before the game.

Like you do every time Babel comes on the pitch? Oh.

On a more serious note, enough of the BS - we cannot play every game with 2 DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS and expect to win games against teams that are happy with a draw. So I ask you or Ryan or anyone who thinks Lucas does enough to start for a supposed premier league contender, we have to play ONE. Keep Lucas or Mascherano as a starter. You decide. I cannot stand seeing Liverpool's midfield start with 3 defensive midfielders, with not one that is capable of getting a goal every 5 games (and please don't tell me 'Dirk Kuyt blah blah blah', he rarely scores any goals from midfield).

Sheesh, it's a testament to how far we've fallen that we're defending what we're seeing lining up on the pitch.

But then again, I guess Lucas to me is what Babel is to you and what Mullins was to Ryan.

It makes me feel physically sick when someone writes "poor the (insert name)". Its up there with "lmao".

Any how to the subject of this thread, its discussting bad. What kind of prick almost seems happy after a bad result for a team he 'supports'? Does this moron support Liverpool, or does he just follow the statements he makes? "lucas is a cunt", "Kuyt is great", "Flossy is shit" etc. So he can gloat when he's right.

The combination is shite, I agree, ideally it's Masher and Aquilani, or even Gerrard if worse comes to worse. But essentially you could argue Lucas AND Masher are victims of the combination because the onus is on one of them to make something happen, especially when the attack is faltering, when realistically both want to just sit.

Regards Babel, at least Lucas is steady (and completely unspectacular, agreed), but Babel promises much with the occasional moment of brilliance, but more often than not delivers fuck all with a side order of no confidence and no desire. At least Lucas tries, he's just proving not very good at it. There's a difference, the frustration with Babel is he has all the physical attributes to succeed, the frustration with Lucas is that trying hard isn't enough.

Yeah, but all he has to do to improve the team is be better than Lucarse

And seeing as virtually everyone is, I'm not that worried

Riiiiiiiight.

So, and unsurprisingly, i'll get fucking bombarded after this post, but Lucas wasn't all that bad yesterday at some points.

However, what i thought was obvious, was that the less tackling Lucas had to do and the further up the field he went, the better he was.

I'd go to a 4-1-4-1 until Rafa grows a pair and puts Aquilani on.

With any luck, it'd be less dour than what we all endured yesterday.

Ok so essentially we agree Mark ... I would rather have Mascherano in the middle with Gerrard/Aqua/Yossi or any player who can create or score goals. We've not had that from Lucas the whole season. Call him a scape goat or whatever anyone wants to call him - fact is Mascherano is SHIT at doing Alonso's role. So is Lucas. But only ONE should be playing in our central midfield ESPECIALLY if Kuyt is on the right wing. So I want Mascherano to start because he's 100x the DM lucas is. I think we can agree with that. Hence, Lucas needs to be on the bench.

What winds me up about this turgid, soul destroying two holding midfielder set up is we still look over run in midfield. Now I'm no Arrigo Sachhi but I thought the whole point was to dominate the midfield and protect the defence.

We might aswell just drop Stevie back into CM and get on the front foot. I don't think we'd be any less sold, and at least we show a bit more attacking verve. Benitez is a stubborn shithouse though.

It's a shame we've been reduced this season to criticizing our own players as an outlet for our frustrations. As we've seen since 2001, if the team isn't playing well then people look for someone to take the blame and, once that person has been determined it doesn't matter how they perform they will still be the focal point for all available animosity.

As those who watched the game have already pointed out Lucas was a long way from the worst player on the pitch. His effort to get the ball back to Gerrard would have been the decisive point of the match if what looked a likely goal from our skipper had materialized. He got turned once or twice very badly in defence and was either - as Mark says - too gutless to take up the space in front of him on occasion or acting under different instructions. Having said that he still wins possession more than most credit him for, he works very hard, his passing is very accurate - particularly first time efforts and he always makes himself available when others deliberately and conspicuously turn their backs.

There's no argument from me that he should not be a regular part of a title chasing team - and guess what, he isn't. I think he's fine as a squad member to come in for two or three weeks to keep the midfield ticking over due to injury but he's not someone who will win the title for us. Having said that - and I'm sure I'll get no support - I would play him ahead of Mascher in a number of these games. The combination of the two doesn't work but unless we need an out and out destroyer I'd pick Lucas instead for a few games since he still offers significantly more going forward.

I don't know why Rafa resists the idea of putting Stevie into the midfield at this point since its clear the centre of the pitch is not working flawlessly. I've maintained for some time that our captain is the only one we have currently who can offer a threat from midfield and Yossi is very capable of making something happen if played in Gerrards position. Perhaps Benitez doesn't believe Gerrard is fit enough (he's clearly carrying an injury) to take the midfield role but I'd try him in there for at least a period of the game.

On a side note, if Aquilani doesn't play this week for a minimum 50 minutes then Rafa needs a slapping from someone handing over their hard earned each week.

At least you're being honest -

So Wizardy would rather partner Lucas with Gerrard/Aquaman/whoever and keep Mascherano on the bench. I don't agree with this at all. Mascherano is amongst the best in the world at his position (DM) and that he doesn't create much SHOULDN'T be an issue. The fact we're relying on him (& sadly, Lucas) to fill in the Xabi's void is a sad testament of a) lack of funds b) a poor purchase of Aquilani or c) Rafa's poor handling of Aquilani (I dunno which it is, and there may be d,e & f) but hey.

Oh please. I remember feeling like I was watching a different game altogether when a half-fit Steven Gerrard came on against Birmingham a few weeks back - I think I'd honestly forgotten what it was like to watch a Liverpool player inject a bit of pace and creativity into the game.

Everything Lucas does is slow and sadly, he's not alone in that respect. The sheer frustration of watching players receive the ball and then take an age to either decide where to play it or turn (and then play it back / sideways) is something I'm really struggling with these days. Well, that and the whole being shit and losing element.

Lucas isn't really the slick midfield passer you paint him out to be - it speaks volumes that at times Maschareno's passing has been more adventurous. The movement around them both is usually fucking terrible but that only excuses so much.

The guy isn't the worst player in the world and I suspect would be a decent signing for an Italian side, however he's dying a slow painful death in that massive Alonso shaped hole as we stare up at Spurs and City with worried faces, so whilst it is unfair on him, I can understand why he does get singled out.
