Skrtel rejects Inter move

Martin Skrtel has rejected a move to Inter Milan, and is 'likely' to pen new Anfield deal.

“I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real,” Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto told FCInterNews.it.

“But then the deal did not go ahead, there was contact made.

“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool.

“As this time I can say that it is likely [he will sign a new contract].”

Basically, a total revamp. That's been the state of the defence for about 3 years now.

Well hopefully that's where the revamp of our staff comes in. I can't make out whether the decision was made due to the lack of fight in the team or the lack of balance in Rodger's tactical plan. Hopefully it's both.

I have to also say this link with Gomez is bemusing. As if we're ANY good at bringing through young CBs. Coates, Wisdom, Ilori - all very talented CBs by all accounts, and they've stagnated to the point of having had their careers ruined. I see little reason other than sheer luck that Gomez would do any differently.

Good full backs would make a massive difference to our defence. Bar Flanagan we've not had any full backs in a while who were particularly good at defending. Currently it's far too easy to drag our centre backs all over the place because they've got so much of the pitch to cover (especially considering the lack of protection from midfield). I'd like to see a ball-playing centre back like Ilori come in alongside Sakho, but I've no idea whether Ilori is ready to play for us, having not seen him play for the reserves or anything.

Selling Lovren now doesnt make any sense though. We're better off with having him as back up this season or maybe seeing him improve from last year.
First choice CBs should be Skrtel - Sakho, but we always get loads of injuries...

Skrtel is the best defender we have.. replacing a CB is not really a priority.. though personally I would like to see us get something better than Lovren..

as for your other comment.. I agree... Cannot argue with that...

Amazingly, Lovren was one of the few bright(er) spots of our dismal end to last season. For some reason, he started to look something like the player we thought we were getting originally. There are definitely higher priorities for replacement elsewhere in the squad IMO.

You are confused. The car-salesman is also a defender.

He's been with us for 6 years, he's not a great defender, he'll be 31 in a few months time, and we're about to offer him an improved contract. Why?

This is one of the very few areas that Ross gets right; we need to stop handing out money to middling players like this year after year.

If you push the 2 FB's forward and then play Steven Gerrard in front of the defence, your CB's are going to be horribly exposed.

Simply keeping the same system and replacing the players won't change things much.

The teams that are defensively solid station 2 midfielders just in front of their CB's to protect them.

You still have to know how to position yourself and manage a defensive line though. Two things that Skrtel has continually failed at. Mark my words, he has truly no idea how to position himself.

I've no problem with Skrtel he's been good far more often than he has been bad.

The only problem is with him in there you need a controlling, cultured centre back beside him.

Not sure if Sahko can play the role.

Not having Gerrard in front of him should help no end.
