Sorry Mark, I think Onky is spot on in this case.
Reina will be gone in a couple of weeks, I wont be surprised if a deal is already in place.

I think/hope so too.
Guillem ballbag said it was in place a few weeks ago, and he was spot on about aspaz/alberto.

There is NO WAY Reina is staying.
We have signed Mignolet first to avoid an inflated price.
Reina will be gone within weeks

I agree. The same might apply to our recruitment for central defence too. We certainly don't want to repeat a scenario like the Torres-Carroll deals.

Mignolet will be one of the best, if not the best keeper in the League this season. He'll be worth every penny imo.

Signing Mignolet before Reina leaves helps us achieve a few things.

1. We won't get fucked over by selling clubs when we need to buy a keeper after Reina leaves.
2. We won't get fucked over by Reina when he tells the whole world he wants to leave.
3. Next year is a World Cup year, we will get 2 keepers dying to impress
4. We can sell Reina in January 2014 for a high price to clubs desperate to have a keeper.
5. We don't get to see Brad Jones, except in DB's team.
6. We can sell Reina on our own terms.

I think Fabio and DHSC might be right. It's not the end of the world to keep Reina for one more season. Yes, it's an extra expense, but look at it this way: we paid Reina 100K/week last season and the season before that - and for last 3 years he didn't play like a 100K per week player and his mistakes consistently cost the whole team points. That's a greater waste. With Mignolet and Reina competing for the #1 spot, we will definitely have improvement in our goalkeeping compared to the last season - isn't that the whole point of spending money in the transfer window?

If there is a good offer, I'm sure Rodgers will not hesitate to sell. But I don't think we'll be "forced" to accept any lowball offer now.

Paella is great, btw.

I was going to like this post, until the last sentence.

There's no point paying him 5m quid to sit on his arse all season.

I mean... what does everyone think he's worth now? 8m? If it came to it and no one wanted him you'd be better letting him go for 5m and you've still saved 2.

Having said that no one is going to want to pay his wages so we'll end up having to pay him off anyways.

Sunderland's Simon Mignolet is expected on Merseyside today to complete his £10m switch to Liverpool.

Mignolet is due to have a medical at Melwood and agree personal terms with the Reds.

It is believed the Belgian international goalkeeper has been offered a five-year deal to compete with Pepe Reina for the No. 1 spot.

Liverpool have agreed a fee of £9m with Sunderland, rising to £10m in add-ons, making him the club's most-expensive goalkeeper ever.

The club are hopeful the deal will be finalised later today and Mignolet, 24, will become Brendan Rodgers' fourth summer signing, taking the Reds boss' spending to £24m.

Rodgers isn't finished yet and still remains on Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori and Porto winger Christian Atsu.

Happy with this signing. I'm glad the club are dealing with this proactively. Reina's said he wants out, so we'll buy a replacement and fuck him off later. There's no hint of panic buying this time around.

Hopefully we'll have a top-class keeper for the next seven years with little net spend.

Interesting that we'll be rebuilding the defensive structure of the team at the same time. I think that's better than having a new central defensive pairing get use to a keeper, only for the keeper to be replaced after a season or two and the cycle repeats ago.

Liverpool FC are expected to sign Simon Mignolet from Sunderland on Tuesday. Re read out live chat with journalist Mark Douglas about the shot stopper.
He had plenty to say about the player's style and his personality, as well as what he may bring to the Reds.
Have a look through his answers below:

Hello I'm Mark - I've been watching Mignolet since he signed for Sunderland three summers ago under Steve Bruce from a small club in Belgium. he was signed as a back up player for Craig Gordon, a promising talent, through one of the manager's contacts.

Bruce did try to sign David James at the same time as he didn't think Mignolet was quite ready. It was blocked by the Sunderland owner. Although he was young, he never looked out of place, and has improved dramatically

What are his strengths?
His shot-stopping is the biggest thing. He's very agile and has made some terrific saves. He's a real athlete. He is very brave too - if you look at the pictures of him his nose is out of joint, because he will go in where many wouldn't. He broke his nose last season doing it and that moment showed he was an established keeper.

What's his attitude like?
He is in the Jordan Henderson style too as he is a real professional - totally dedicated to his craft, who impressed everybody at Sunderland. He will only get better.

Is his distribution as good as Reina's?
He is a good footballer and is capable with the ball at his feet. Distribution wise, I'd say that is the one thing he needed to improve. I don't think he's quite like Reina, but Sunderland don't play that way, so we will have to see. However I don't think you should have too many worries about that.

What's he like as a person?
He's an intelligent guy, and his degree was in not history, sorry, but political science. He can also speak five languages - English, Flemish, German, Dutch and French - so he's a smart lad. he'll be adding Scouse to that list soon I'm sure as he mastered Mackem up here.

As a person, I've interviewed him a few times. he's one of those guys no-one would say a bad word about. he is always happy to talk and will take responsibility if things don't go well. Interestingly he was studying for a history degree during his time at Sunderland by distance learning and has passed that now. His fiance has also just passed a law degree too. Overall i think he's just what you want in the squad.

In terms of how he is in the dressing room, I'd say he is all about quiet authority. He's not like Pepe Reina in terms of personality. He is younger which makes a big difference, but he will be a bit quieter and pay attention to what is going on. He is regarded very highly by his team-mates though - you don't fool anybody in the dressing room so he is very well liked. They have a lot of time for him.

How will he adapt to playing for LFC?
Sunderland were quite defensive, so keeping a clean sheet was very important. Sunderland were never battered by anyone so he was never a one-man wall with the defence in front of him, so he wouldn't find it hard to adjust to Liverpool where he would need good concentration while they are attacking. He has good focus.

He made about 150 saves over the course of the season, which is alot, but he is great in the key situations. he made some really big saves, for instance against Wigan away when he produced some brilliant saves. The same at Reading too - they were pressure games and he delivered. I can't remember too many mistakes either - maybe one against Fulham which he was beating himself up over. But he put himself through the mill after that, which tells you alot.

He would be able to handle the expectation at LFC I think. I know Jordan Henderson took time to settle and for people to see what he is about, but Mignolet will make the big saves and that is how he will cope. He has played in big crowds for Sunderland and the fans are fanatical. Players who can't handle that don't last long up here.

Overall view?
Overall, I think he will do very well. Liverpool are getting a great pro and probably one of the best young keepers in Europe. He's just 25 too - he will only get better. It is a signing to be pleased about if you're a Liverpool fan.

there were rumours he'd failed his medical a day or two ago

Speaking from the Confederations Cup, Pepe Reina has hit out at Liverpool coach goalkeepers Rodgers rival firm Simon Mingolet of Belgium. Pepe, a leader in the locker room of the national team, refused to be distracted from their international obligations by the news of his descent to the Belgian, but took the opportunity to criticize strongly the transfer policy of the young Irish coach Brendan Rodgers.

When asked how he felt about the news combined through World Cup squad membership Reina changed his previous message stating that welcome the competition and now this time criticized the coach and the club to dismantle the strong Liverpool team a few years ago and who does not appreciate their loyalty.

"All great players have gone from Liverpool now, you can see that Alvaro (Arbeloa), Torres, Javier (Mascherano) and Xabi (Alonso).

“Now, the club will also sell Luis (Suarez) and try to sell only the money. The club will end up worse than last year, I know it was Luis and I who took the team to where it was last year and now we want to sell. they team Liverpool will not finish with any successes next year".

Reina also spoke of his over nascent at being relegated to the assistant keeper after staying at Liverpool

"I've been there through all the problems or owners and coaches with nothing, big clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal were interested in my autograph, but I did part of a transfer request could have helped with the move, and now David (De Gea) is with them and not me.

Asked if the speech to national press in an official interview may anger Liverpool but the goalkeeper is content.

“I'm also faithful while waiting boat would come for me, but now will not go Valdes and I am on lonely island, but I compete with anyone, I know that I am the best goalkeeper in England when I'm in shape."

The former Barcelona and Villarreal goalkeeper also revealed that he is still in regular contact with his former boss, Rafa Benitez, and said Benitez also sees Liverpool with worries as the last of Benítez own players leave this summer and I just made all this this up.
