SUNDERLAND’S Simon Mignolet is on the verge of a £12m move to Liverpool this weekend after the two clubs finally agreed a deal yesterday.

On a day of dramatic developments in the transfer saga, a breakthrough was made which satisfied both sides with Sunderland agreeing to accept slightly less than their £10m asking price but brokering a deal which could see the final fee rise to nearly £12m with add-ons.

Now Mignolet and his representatives will enter into talks with the Merseyside club over the next few days and the Belgian will undergo a medical.

But neither that, nor personal terms, are expected to be an issue after the two clubs made progress on the transfer fee.

That agreement broke the deadlock which had existed since last weekend when the Echo first revealed the Belgian stopper was on the brink of a £10m to the Merseysiders.

Days before that, the Echo had revealed that Mignolet and his representatives had stalled on an extension to the keeper’s contract at the Stadium of Light.

And though he had two years still remaining on his deal, that fact spurred Liverpool on to dramatically up an initial £6.5m offer to £8m in a bid to beat off expected interest from Arsenal.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre postponed a business trip to Brazil last weekend in order to push the deal through but the two sides were stuck for days with Sunderland unprepared to budge from their minimum £10m figure.

Yesterday afternoon though the impasse was broken when the Black Cats accepted the slightly lesser sum for the prospect of earning more in the long run.

Mignolet’s representatives remained unaware yesterday evening that agreement had been reached between the two clubs.

But now they will go into full swing and the move is expected to be done before the end of next week.

The loss of the club’s Player of the Season will sadden Sunderland fans who have been thrilled by the Belgian’s heroics between the posts and there is no doubt that he was the player most responsible last season for keeping the club in the Premier League.

Ideally, Sunderland would have hung on to the 25-year-old as the club progressed.

But with the Black Cats finishing fourth bottom last season and Mignolet eager to catch the eye of the Belgian international manager, Sunderland appreciate that the keeper might feel his interests were better served at a higher profile, more successful club.

For their part, Sunderland have a ready-made deputy in the wings in the shape of Republic of Ireland Keiren Westwood and will regard £10m as a great return on a player Steve Bruce paid St Truidenn £2m for, three years ago this month.

Looking ahead, the move will also give the club significant funds to restructure the team within the restrictive framework of the new financial fair play regulations.

But inevitably there will still be a sense of wistfulness among supporters who will appreciate that whatever the fee, the club has lost a player of rare quality.

While I do think the fee seems a little steep, its a good idea to have add ons as part of the fees instead of lump sum upfront. If we end up paying those incentives, then it'd probably mean the signings have turned out well.

So does anyone get the feeling that Rodgers is pissed with Reina's constant talking in recent months about potentially returning to Barca and his recent one about Suarez and "understanding" his situation and wanting to play for a bigger club? It'd be interesting and a bit of a sad state of affairs if Reina is pushed out the side with no opening available at Barca. And if this is the case, that Rodgers is taking this stance, then it seems pretty ominous when it comes to Suarez.

Perhaps but Reina is a little more dispensable than Reina and a major asset that we can't afford to mismanage - we need to keep him playing well or sell for a top price.

I just think that Rodgers doesn't think that Reina is good enough and IMO he'd be right. He's decent, but nowhere near the level he used to be. He's been playing in the comfort zone for the last couple of years and its shown in his fitness and average performances.

Mark, I hope so. As Kopking king has said 7th isn't good enough. You want to play for a big club do a better job

I'm tired of his gabbing so I am sure BR is

Without knowing the actual interest from Reina's side it is difficult to assess this transfer. Reina like Alonso is very good at PR unlike Torres and Suarez. For all we know, in the background he maybe aggressively pushing for a deal with Barcelona.

Having said that with every passing day Mignolet's value seems to be going up. First it was 8 , then 9, 10 and now it is 12.

Apparently Rodgers did a Talksport interview just now.

Mignolet brought in as competition for Reina.
Reina staying.

What.

Also, It's not as if Rodgers is going to say that Pepe's exit is imminent or that we're forcing him out. It's competition for now, but in reality I expect to see him move on this summer. Even if Barca aren't interested in the 8-10M range, I think a whole host of clubs would be willing to think about it.

If I'm Ayre, I approach Monaco myself and ask if they're interested. Might seem like a desperate approach, but it's the smart move.

Gotta agree mate.

That is why I'm none too fussed about Pepe. Whether he stays or goes makes no difference to me. His constant jabbering is annoying and he is nothing like he used to be. Mignolet for approximately 9M is good business. He is young, competent and will improve at Liverpool.

We should have 2 ace players for each position. The competition will be fierce in the coming season and it should do wonders for our club in the quest for a Top 4 finish. There much to look forward to.

We're not spending 10m on a Goalkeeper for him to be back up.

Furthermore, it's reported Mignolet is looking to raise his profile in order to become Belgium's no1 for the World Cup...he won't be doing that sitting on the bench every week.

Not sure but Thibaut Courtois - A.Madrid keeper on loan from Chelsea has is very highly rated so it'll be between him and Mignolet as to who's no1 going into the World Cup.

It's Courtois. Check the line ups from their last 6 qualifiers.

If Mignolet became first choice here, it would certainly push his case, so he should be somewhat motivated.

Exactly im not fussed if he stays or not. He's done nothing in years to feel like we would miss him. Whereas Mignolet will be hungry to prove himself and he's fighting to get the No.1 jersey for Belgium. I doubt he will as Courtois is good, but this move will give him a better chance.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has welcomed the arrival of Simon Mignolet at Anfield.

The Spain stopper is facing the prospect of sitting on the bench next season after Brendan Rodgers completed the £9million capture of Mignolet from Stoke.

But Reina, on international duty with Spain at the Confederations Cup, insists he is happy at Liverpool and hinted that he is ready to fight for his place.

‘It hasn't changed a bit,’ said Reina, who has three years left on his contract at Liverpool. ‘I said it many times I am really comfortable and very happy in Liverpool.

‘Every team needs competition. It is more than welcome, and if it is finally done I welcome him and anything he needs, I'm here.’

Liverpool boss Rodgers provided Reina with reassurance yesterday after claiming that Mignolet has been signed to compete with and not replace the Spanish stopper.

Speaking to talkSport, he said: 'One of the things we’re trying to build is a competitive squad. Our squad was very thin last year and it was great being we were able to introduce a few young players from our academy that but it’s very important that we have competition in every position and that wasn’t always the case.

'Pepe Reina and I went out for a meal a couple of months before the end of the season and I told him exactly what we were going to do, which was to provide real competition in that area.
'He was fully aware of my intention of the course of the last few months. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to Pepe.

'Pepe is a fantastic goalkeeper but Simon Mignolet is a player that has done really well. He’s also part of an emerging Belgium squad that has come into a golden era. He’s very much a part of that.

'When you work with Pepe he’s a great man. A very committed man to the club and he’s an outstanding goalkeeper.'

Mundo Deportivo says Reinas agent has told Liverpool he wants to join Barca and has already agreed personal terms. Dont know how credible they are mind.

Eeeuuggghhh. Looks & tastes like vomit. Yuck. I hates seafood. Only like blag stuff, chippy fish & scampi.

I hate paella too, although I must admit I regret not trying it when I was in Valencia (that's where it comes from), it's just been so spectacularly shit everywhere else I've had it.
