Shrewsbury Town FC (FA Cup)

It's 50/50 with the town's folk, Shrew or Shrow, the posh ones and the ones who think they are say Shrow
Haven't been thier new ground but the pitch at the old ground had one six yard box about a yard higher than the rest of the pitch.

I always said "Shrowsbury".

I read up about it the other week, apparently even within the town there is a difference of opinion on the pronunciation, I think the posh ones use "shrow", so I'm in good company
I've only ever met three people from there, & two of those were a couple. All said 'Shrewsbury' so assumed it was the correct pronunciation.

Anyway, no one has ever said 'Taming of the shrow'.

Rurik, my main man, my dude...it's against Shrewsbury...
There's lower opposition and there's Shrewsbury. This is a midtable league one team. I think we're fine with two top class defenders on the pitch despite their two month injury layoff.

We’re playing a bunch of kids too, don’t we? Besides Lovren might not be cleared to play all 90 minutes if he’s just returned to training.

I dont think Keita will start but it would be good for him to get 30 mins so Jones deserves to get the nod. Lovren and Matip should be more than good enough for this one. Hopefully Fabinho can get 60 mins and be ready for West Ham.

Adrian, Williams, Matip, Lovren, Larouchi, Fabinho, Lallana, Jones, Elliot, Origi, Minamino.

Ideally Keita for Lallana, Chiravella for Fabinho at around 60 mins

How about Edinburgh, Reading, Bicester, Salisbury, Bury, Cockburn, etc. The Echo even published a list of places in Liverpool with counter intuitive names 🙂

This is interesting so I looked it up. It seems the list of place names with counter intuitive pronunciations is endless and are called heterophonic names. It's rather sexual because there are also homophonic names!

I grew up 20 odd miles from there and it's always been Shrewsbury to me
Which way? I've lived 20 odd miles from there in three directions and it's always been Shrewsbury to me as well.

As it is the FA Cup I'm not really arsed about this game, I want Tranmere to go through more than us.

True.

But I was born in Berkshire, and noone ever called me a "total bark"

(For those from overseas, Berkshire is pronounced Barkshire)

West, into Wales

I bought a house in Bury (Berry) in 1998, six years later sold my home in Bury (Burry)

Is that a an exhaustive list of the differing ways we can pronounce Shrewsbury? If so, it makes little sense.

Just listened to the blood Red podcast & the Shrewsbury Star footy journo was on, he's actually a red, & said that their manager is also a red, but has tried to keep that out of the press in the build up.

They've got one red who will play for them, & a bitter who plays upfront too, & was there to see them getting beat by the kids earlier in the season, he scored the winner against Premier League Fulham in the Cup a few years back.

They also have a left back on loan from Blackburn who is a red & played alongside TAA, who he's still mates with, played for the youth sides before we let him go & once against mainz under Klopp, who may play.

Sunday's tie is particularly exciting for several Liverpool fans within the Town dressing room, led by manager Sam Ricketts.

Ricketts, son of former world champion show jumper Derek Ricketts and nephew of champion jump jockey John Francome, admitted: "I was a Liverpool fan but I only really supported them as a mate of mine did. I was more interested in horses then."

But, for Merseyside-born Shaun Whalley, who has become the club's longest-serving player since joining from Luton in 2015, this is a dream.

"All my family are Liverpool fans," he said. "My mates are season-ticket holders and I was at the Champions League final in Istanbul in 2005.

"This is brilliant for me, especially having got to the age of 32 and thinking you're never going to play against them."

It also caps a remarkable turn of events for former Liverpool junior Sam Hart, who is eligible to play against them after signing on loan from Blackburn Rovers just a week ago.

"The first thing the gaffer [Tony Mowbray] mentioned when he told me Shrewsbury wanted me was that I'd be able 'to catch up with a few old mates'," he grinned.

He played just once for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, but he has not forgotten it, getting flown out by private jet for a pre-season friendly in Germany.

"I remember it like it was yesterday," he said. "And then getting the call from Jurgen saying I was coming on.

"Having grown up there, to put a shirt on and play against them would be special

Yeh, it may not be quite so happy a feeling when we score a seventh
I wouldn't be that cocky.

Whilst on paper we should walk it, as our weakened side will probably look fairly strong simply cos we want to get games into people who haven't played much, that means our side will have a lack of rhythm & won't be used to playing together, in contrast to theirs.

On top of that, they play a very defensive style as their normal game, it's not like they're a side who normally play a different style but change it to play us.

I wouldn't be massively surprised if we went ahead early & got a few, but equally, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being a very tight game.

My lad's mate is their striker, Callum Lang. He was in the Liverpool set up with TAA, and he's on loan from Wigan with 2 goals from his 5 appearances, he's been injured. Let's hope we're not all going on about him later.

Leave that to Blue Fume - the lad will be in on the conspiracy.

I know this is slightly off topic, but speaking of the telly, is the game televised on weds with West Ham? I’m guessing it will be.
