Sami Hyypia has emerged as a candidate for the manager’s post at Brighton.

The 40-year-old former Liverpool defender was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen last season but guided them into a Champions League qualification position before leaving.

The Finn is still highly-regarded at Anfield where he spent 10 years as a player and is well connected in the British game and abroad.

Brighton have been talking to various candidates after Oscar Garcia resigned at the end of the season. Garcia, who held informal talks with Celtic has since returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Malky Mackay, Steve Clarke, Lyon coach Remi Garde, Tim Sherwood and Chris Hughton have all been considered at Brighton but many of those names are also pushing for the chance to speak to West Bromwich Albion and Southampton.

Hyypia was in charge of Leverkusen for two years and won 50 of his 92 games, losing 27.
A flurry of bets on Tuesday installed him as some bookmakers’ favourite for the Brighton job.

[article=http://www.seagulls.co.uk/news/article/lawro-praises-hyypia-appointment-1618365.aspx?]Former Brighton & Hove Albion defender, Mark Lawrenson, praised the club’s appointment of Sami Hyypia as the new first-team manager and believes the Finn would have learned a great deal from coaching in Germany.

Hyypia spent the past two years at leading Bundesliga side, Bayer Leverkusen and Lawrenson believes his experience of managing at the highest level will be invaluable as he takes charge of the Albion.

He told seagulls.co.uk, “First and foremost, I think it’s a good appointment.

“Yes he’s still young and learning his trade a little bit, but to go to Leverkusen and start as joint manager before taking over the club will only help Brighton and Sami Hyypia.

“You cannot underestimate the experience he’s had in Germany, which is top class. He was preparing teams to face the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, who are both European Cup winning sides.

“Obviously he wouldn’t have seen much of Brighton over the last 18 months, but he’ll have done his homework and seen how far the club has come in recent years.”

Lawrenson also believes the new manager will instantly command respect in the dressing room and from the Albion fans.

“I think he’ll be a very good man manager; he’s a really nice guy and I don’t think he’s likely to shout at anyone or throw tantrums.

“I’m sure that all the players will enjoy playing for him and everyone behind the scenes will realise what a good guy he is.

“That doesn’t necessary guarantee you will be successful, but I will be surprised if he isn’t.

“The fans will also be delighted to have him on board. He’s already held in high regard and they’ll get behind him, there’s no doubt about it.”[/article]

[article=http://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/11263359._/?]Jimmy Case has urged Albion to tap into their new boss's standing in English football.

Former Liverpool star Sami Hyypia has taken over as manager on a three-year contract.

Case, who starred for both Liverpool and the Seagulls as a player, reckons Hyypia's arrival will impress people around the game.

He told The Argus last night: “I know a lot of lads respect Sami very highly.

“He’s a top bloke. I’ve chatted to him doing radio work and he’s one who always gave 100% as a player. He is on the ball.

“Most importantly, he has a strong connection with the top level of the game.

“He has great international contacts and that is vital these days.

“If you’ve got friends within the game at Liverpool and in the Bundesliga and if you are that well known it will help you attract players.”

Case added: “Everyone in the game likes him. That’s a bonus.

“If people don’t like you, you are not going to get much support or help when it comes to things like loan deals.

“You need friends within the game. I think this will be a good move for him and hopefully for Brighton.”[/article]
