I think its a fair question, but the obvious answer is 'not yet'. At some point we need to start bringing younger players into the squad. By the start of next season Trent and Joe will be the only established first team players under 25. Thats not an immediate concern as most of our squad will still be in the peak 26 - 30 range for another year or two. Beyond that it would be a worry.

But its better to do these things by changing one or two players a year than having to massively update a squad in a short space of time. City have let their squad age in the last couple of seasons as Chelsea did a while back. Now they are very dependent on the likes of Aguero, Silva, Fernandino and Otamendi who are all past their best. Plus they havent replaced Kompany either. The result is they are just not as relentless as they were 2 or 3 years ago and there is a rebuilding job to be done.

If Klopp wants to leave behind a great squad capable of winning trophies after he steps away then the lessons are there to be learned. If he wants to milk every last drop of success from the squad hes built before moving on and letting the next guy deal with it then he will probably get another 2 seasons out of this current group before their performance levels start to noticeably decline.
This is exactly why posted this thread. I think too many interpreted it as I wanted to swap Salah for Werner just like that.
It's not every day you have a chance to sign a striker like Werner so cheaply and he doesn't want to move unless he thinks he has a got a chance to displace one of our front three.

Let me add that I've been convinced that maybe it's not a good idea this summer.
Maybe Brewster is the one to do it.

Agree with most of that... but I would look to learn our lessons from Spurs rather than City.

City have tried to inject new blood but have just had mixed success. Laporte is their new Kompany in terms of quality. Bernado Silva has been great and he and Foden will replace David Silva. On the other hand, their fullback signings haven't quite worked out, Jesus doesn't look like he'll ever develop enough to be the main man (though he's still a decent player) and jury is still out on Rodri. It's not like they need an overhaul - they're still a great team.

Spurs, however, miscalculated how strongly they could lean on their existing squad and manager, missing key opportunities to strengthen and letting players run down their contracts. Now they find themselves with Mourinho needing to build themselves back up again - they can't afford any missteps in the market now.

I think with top attacking players, confidence or overconfidence even, is key.
I absolutely wouldn’t want a guy too scared of challenging himself over the duration of what would be a 5 year contract, to be replacing the most lethal scorer we’ve had (according to his goal to game ratio) in Salah.

Kanchelskis was their top goal scorer that year.

Sharp was a rising start.

Like I said you obviously didn’t follow football that closely back then.

And Ferguson is talking rubbish he didn’t even mention Keane who was better than all of them for Utd

Sharp loved the good life and never came close to fulfilling his potential. He wasn't needed with Giggs there. Keane was basically finished when he left. What did he play another half season?

The Keane point was referring to the fact he wasn’t mentioned as a world class player under Ferguson which he clearly was, not that he was sold at his peak. He was finished when he left for Celtic

Don't talk such bollocks. He was in the very first post I made as one of his Top 3 #69. Ferguson however rated him differently but likely just sour grapes.

We should sign Werner regardless and work out the fit of the squad once he's here. Having 4 excellent attackers for the front three with potentially also Divock & Minamino as deputies would be dreamland.

[article]Liverpool should consider selling Mohamed Salah if they have the opportunity to sign Jadon Sancho or Kylian Mbappe during the summer transfer window, according to Darren Bent.

Salah, 27, is currently Liverpool's top scorer this season with 18 goals in all competitions, including 14 in the Premier League
to help the Reds to a commanding 22-point lead at the top of the table and put them on the verge of the title

He has also found the net three times in his last two league outings, but Bent does not believe his contributions are as valuable as those of team-mates Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino.

Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho and Paris Saint-Germain striker Mbappe have been highlighted as potential summer targets for Jurgen Klopp and the former England striker thinks it could be worth cashing in on the Egyptian to help secure either player.

Bent told talkSPORT: “Listen, we know he scores a lot of goals and he is a top, top player. Two Golden Boots, Player of the Season, Champions League winner, about to be a Premier League winner, the accolades are there.

“But when you look at his general play to say someone like Mane, I’d have to say Mane’s been better than him.

“He may score more goals than Mane, but Mane’s work-rate for the team, he’s unselfish, always looks for others first, he’ll get his fair share of goals. So you can’t sell Mane, he’s so important.

“Firmino, we know he doesn’t score that many goals, but he’s the glue, he links it all together. His hold-up play is arguably one of the best in the league. He brings players in, holds on to the ball, he’s fantastic.

“So you look at Salah, yes he does score all these goals, but is he really complementing Mane and Firmino or is he looking for more goals?

“I’ve seen certain situations this season where he should pass it, but he’s shot, and you can see the frustration starting to build.

“It’s not about selling him and getting £100million and that’s it, but if you can replace him with an Mbappe or someone like a Jadon Sancho, I think it’s worth thinking about.”

Salah has scored a staggering 89 goals in just 137 games for Liverpool since joining from Roma in a £34m deal in 2017.

Meanwhile, World Cup winner Mbappe, 21, continues to impress with PSG and has found the net 22 times in just 25 games for the French champions this season.

Sancho also continues to attract the interest of Europe's top clubs after a breakthrough season with Dortmund last year.

The England international, 19, has registered 15 goals and 16 assists in 27 games in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season.[/article]

I count my blessings every god damn day whenever I read this sort of article, knowing very well that we don't have these fucking buffoons running our club in recruitment department and also do analyst work for us. There are solid evidence to debunk everything Darren Bent said, yet he keep going on and on with that narrative that others used a few weeks back.

😛 Another one

Bullshit.

Swapping one world class player for another is the type of shit a club on the rise does , for the first time in my life time the club is at the peak of English football, it should be extending not reconstructing

For sure it's going to be interesting to see how Klopp handles this. He said he won't leave the club in a position similar to Ferguson did at United (though he didn't exactly say that) ! He's a got a few years to go though so happy days !

Bent is the latest in an ever lengthening list of appalling whoppers on TalkSh!te, a shallow motormouth who sounds like he's on a Red Bull dripfeed. Three quarters of their presenters need to be junked immediately and Bent is one of those. Of course he's talking garbage.

Honest question, which club would want Salah and be able to the asking price? RM need to sell to buy. Barca is in a financial mess. PSG has Mbappe. We will not sell to PL rivals

I think Madrid will want to spend Salah-level money on Mbappe so no go there.
Juventus certainly don’t have the pull of years gone by as Serie A has been boring as hell and they’ve not been CL contenders for god knows how long.
Barca have no money left.
PSG would only be interested if Mbappe decided to leave (they don’t have a strong bargaining power now that he’ll only have a year left on his contract in the summer), but it’ll be a tough pill to swallow for them, losing a 21 year old world class player and replacing him with a 29 year old world class player with no resale value.

I don’t think we’ve ever been in a position where we feel this safe about keeping our world class
players. Not just because of the money involved but because there doesn’t seem to be too many destinations, if any, that are more attractive than the all conquering LFC headed by Klopp.
