Rodgers

I've always been pretty positive about Rodgers - but he does have flaws.

The biggest one, I think, is probably the one that reared it's head at the start of the season - changing tactics, formations and lineups almost every game - looked like he was trying to be too clever.

It was said at the time - get a consistent lineup playing a certain formation consistently using consistent tactics and we'd be better.

I'm glad he started doing that - because it's turning our season around.

Obviously I'm over-simplifying, there where other issues - new players, injuries, loss of form to key players - but he has to take on board the things the last few months should have taught him.

If he does - then good - future should be exciting.

If he doesn't - then it's probably another false dawn.

Still not convinced by some of our defending though.

Wasn't he changing things around in an effort to find a way of playing that suited the players he had left?

That's my take on it too. IMO not all his choices were good ones, notably on the defensive side of things as others have said, but I didn't get the impression that he was tinkering for tinkering's sake.

I remember debates on here more than once over the years about whether we wanted a young manager or an experienced one coming in. In those debates I was always on the side of those who wanted experience ("Not surprising, considering you came out of the Ark", do I hear folk say?😉) and I still did when Rodgers was appointed. FSG have another model, though, and now the decision's been taken we need to stick with it unless its failure becomes clear. Not only do I not think that's happened, on the contrary I see real promise in the squad and in Rodgers' willingness and ability to learn from his mistakes.

I don't buy that, I'm afraid.

Important though he was, we only lost one player from the starting lineup at the start if the season.

Losing the Studge and Suarez stripped the side of a sod of a lot of pace up front, and meant we were under more pressure in games because we lacked an "out-ball". I'm afraid trying to fit Stevie into the line-up didn't help either. Not all the manager's decisions were the right ones, but they rarely will be in such circs.

He fucked up by not signing a top striker in the summer. But now look, with the same squad that was missing the hell out of Suarez a few months ago, gradually he's made us dead good again. We're great to watch and top of the form league. We all believe we could win the FA, Europa and get top 4. He's obviously very good at his job.

He fucked up by not buying a striker with pace and natural mobility. Sterling proved we didn't need a top class one.

I'm not convinced yet, but his decision making has been a lot better since Everton. Also he's lucky Gerrard is injured cause as soon as he's back, Rodger's weakness will show again. I'll wait and see. If we win fuck all and finish 6th, the slack on his leash will have to be reigned in.

We had that striker all but signed in Remy though. Which makes the jump to Balotelli even more strange.
They're not similar at the slightest as a player.

Remy would have suited us very well. Shame we opted not to sign him. I'd like to know why Chelsea said yes and we no.

That 8 million gamble compared to the 16 million gamble with Balotelli. In hindsight we should obviously have taken the first one, health concerns or not.

Owners wanted Balotelli as he's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more marketable?

Rodgers deserves massive credit, he may seems a little stubborn and foolish in the media at times, but tactically he's wonderful, it takes him a bit of time for him to figure it out, causing a very frustrating period for us fans, but he always finds the right way to change the team to bring the best out of his players, see 4-1-2-1-2 last season, and 3-4-3 this season. I still think his judgement for substitutions can be poor, but in general, he's one of the best in the league.

He's clearly a very good coach, and I have never questioned his position during the season, but I do wish he'd shut up at times. Mentioning the 'system' when asked about Coutinho's goal was cringeworthy. The system, after half time tweaks, worked well to keep Southampton out. Fair dos. But attempting to claim some reflected glory in respect of the 'system' when describing Coutinho's goal made me face palm. They picked up on it MOTD, and he can only blame himself. He asks for that sometimes.

my girlfriend would have killed me for that. She doesnt like it at all, when I make such cheap jokes and try to take credit of everything. I hope Rodgers learns though, he is still young.

He wasn't joking though. That would have been cool.

That goal had little to do with a system, and more to do with individual brilliance

Poor form brodge

It wasnt until I saw the replay of the goal that I realised Markovic did something other than kick & run, miss-time tackles and fix his hair.

It was actually a good pass, simple and short, yes, but perfectly timed and weighted. There are many wingers and fullbacks who would not make that pass in that situation.

Massive credit to Rodgers for figuring his team out. Just a shame it took him so long and he needed to do it. Jury is still out as to whether he can pinpoint a player to sign tho.
