poll question - would you rather win the FAC, LC or finish top 4?

results - over 80% who voted would rather finish top 4.

wow! seriously, wow...

Eighty percent of people are going to be extremely disappointed.

'liverpool exists to finish top 4' just doesn't roll off the tongue like 'liverpool exists to win trophies'. just doesn't have the same 'zing'.

We all know we need better players and to attract top players we'll need CL football can't see the big problem. Yes a cup would be nice but if the clubs going to improve especially with the financial fair play coming in when we need to be generating as much cash as possible to attract top players.

Agreed. Sorry but that's how I'd have voted too. LFC exists to win not just any old trophies but the big ones, and getting top 4 is a vital step along that road.

I would also have voted for a top 4 finish. Just qualifying for the Champions League is worth some £10-20 million - enough to buy another dud forward! 😉

Sadly this is completely true. Anyone that values the FA Cup ahead of 4th is living in the past.

i don't know why that should be remotely surprising. CL qualification is way more important, imo. it's not even close.

i didn't give a fuck about the Worthless Cup when everyone was in raptures about beating brum on pens in 2001, and i don't give a fuck now, either.

It was many years since we had won any kind of trophy, so I think it was reasonable to be pretty pleased about winning the League Cup. I would still like to win it this season, for similar reasons! 🙂

There's no way I'd celebrate finishing in the top 4 at all, let alone the drinking session that would follow a cup win.

That said, once we win another cup, the preference would be back to getting into the Champions League.

if we finish top 4 we should mint a big silver '4' and parade it around the city in an open top bus.
[/quote]

I dont think anyone would be shouting from the rooftops if we get 4th spot. But it is the key to us getting back to the top. We need to get that CL spot at the expense of everything else, otherwise we will slip further down the rankings.

I don't think we are going to finish top 4 so for me it's it 'do you want a cup or fuck all for the season?'.
a very easy choice.

Beat me to it

Brilliant. More sensationalism and drama which amounts to sweet FA.

If we want to win the league at any point in the future, then we have to make progress in that competition. Whether you like the 4th place instead of a cup win is immaterial, because you actually know that in order to compete we need more income and to spend that income wisely.

The whole I'd rather win a cup than finish 4th is the type of old school thinking like closing the club shop the day after we won in Istanbul. Its outdated and if we continue that way, then we will only dream of winning the league again.

I will always want to win a trophy over all else. that will always come first for me, I'll take my chances that we'll 'somehow' get our shit together if we win a cup but fail to finish top 4. 2006 we won the fac, 2008 we came second in the league so what was the more successful season? probably the later but as time goes on the 2006 year will carry more significance as it was the last year we won anything.*

*hopefully the the 2008 season wont carry more significance over time as the last time we challenged for the league.

So, if God offered you the Carling Cup every season for the rest of your life, but we never again finish top four, you'd be ok with that..?

This is like the poll that somebody asked a few weeks back - "Am I a bad fan because Cup > top 4 finish?", or something like that.

I don't understand the continued back-and-forth about this.

Top 4 finish = better for our long term future. Hence, I'll take it.

Anybody who would choose the Carling Cup or the (now vastly devalued, despite the fact that we all wish that it wasn't) FA Cup over that is, in my opinion, simply stubbornly refusing to accept the reality of modern football and the fact that it's a very different time and place than the one many of us grew up in...

Just 'cos we wish it wasn't so, doesn't mean it'll ever go back to the way it was.

It won't.

And we can win the odd cup and become Aston Villa or we can accept that top 4 is now more important and just get on with it.

Our main priority has to be top 4. Its been that way for years. That has been the minimum requirement - qualifying for the Champions League. Any other trophies are a bonus

You need to be in the CL to attract better players and you need better players to win the league. That's pretty much it.,

People have mentioned winning the league cup in 2001, and I make no apology about being pleased about that at the time but even in that season getting into the CL was the number one priority, which we also achieved.

I don't really like this long termist fan view. I'm a fan and I want to win things, if that's the FA Cup then so be it.

Obviously everyone knows we need to finish in the top four, if we're going to realise everyone's top aim to win the league. But if we finished in the top four every year, never pushed on and won the league, and didn't win a cup I'd be a little disappointed.

Finishing in the top four is boring for me, it's not really an achievement, and it doesn't go down in the history books.

So, if God offered you the Carling Cup every season for the rest of your life, but we never again finish top four, you'd be ok with that..?

Anyway, it's a stupid discussion. We're going to win the treble next year anyway, and all this talk will be defunct.

No, for the reason underlined...

I'm only ok going trophy-less for a while if it leads to the ultimate prize further on down the road.

And, though obvious, if we'd won the FA Cup in 2004 but finished 6th, Istanbul would never have happened.

a treble? the fa cup, the league cup, and...? you can't possibly mean the league, if manchester was nuked off the face of the planet we'd still fuck up the league (probably because the team would be suffering from radiation poisoning, but I digress).

Yeah, and I'm sure everyone would agree. But finishing fourth may not lead to anything. We've finished in the top four a lot in the past 20 years.

But again, this one or the other is a little pointless in my opinion.

By the way, I would vote top 4.
And I dont understand why the 'We cant attract top players' brigade are suggesting a fucking Coca cola cup win will suddenly drag Lionel Van Cryuff to our door.

Id like to win a cup. But we exist to win trophie(S) and 4th is step one to doing that.
I'll be fucking sick to my stomach watching us drive round Liverpool parading that three handled monstosity while Spurs are arranging flights to Madrid and Rome.
Fuck that!! FUCK NOT BEING IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.
