Hodgson keen on landing Fulham ace

Skysports.com understands Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Fulham defender Paul Konchesky.

Reds bos Roy Hodgson has openly admitted bringing a new left-back is one of his top priorities this summer and it is believed he wants Konchesky to solve the problematic position.

Hodgson is a big admirer of Konchesy having worked with the 29-year-old for two-and-a-half-years prior to his switch to Anfield.

Liverpool are keen to bring in a new left-back before the close of the transfer window and had been linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven's Carlos Salicido.

However, it appears Liverpool have opted to go for Konchesky with the player having just a year to run on his contract at Fulham.

Konchesky's future at Fulham has been the subject of speculation all summer with Birmingham having seen one bid turned down eartlier this summer.

New Fulham boss Mark Hughes was keen to keep hold of the former Charlton man, but Konchesky is thought to have informed the Cottagers chief of his desire to be reunited with Hodgson at Anfield.

Liverpool are believed to be prepared to pay up to £3.5million to land Konchesky as Hodgson looks to finalise his rebuilding plans at the club.

we need a LB urgently. we cannot go into the next 36 games with Aurelio and Agger. I don't rate Konchesky and I would much rather prefer Salcido BUT if it's a choice between Agger/Aurelio and Aurelio/Konchesky, I'd be sad but I know what I would pick.

A mid-table side. Stands to reason, really. He's a mid-table manager.

Neil, give the fucking guy a chance! He's had 5 games and little money so he's hardly able or likely to do a Mancini. If he had £30m to spend and was going after Konchesky, then there would be questions. But we don't have £30m to spend.

This is the reality we face, whether we like it or not.[quote author=Brendan link=topic=41588.msg1161484#msg1161484 date=1282721628]

With Championship finances....

Watched Fulham - Scum at the weekend, and Konchesky is a very solid defender. You know what you get, and with the position we're in at the moment, thats exactly what we need. When we finally get some money, Konchesky will be a good back up for a better player. Aurelio's pay as you play contract can then be ripped to pieces.

Anyone remember the last defender we bought from Fulham? He did alright..

That's the spirit!

I wonder if Brendan rated Finnan.

Quite a few unfashionable defenders have come in and done well, Henchoz was relegated with Blackburn the season before we signed him, I remember someone saying back then that you "don't buy defenders from a team that's just been relegated, especially centre backs". That worked out well.

Finnan was about 25 and had just won Best LB in the PL award. This is hardly the same thing.

We do need a left-footed, experienced LB, but I must admit I was hoping for a better one than Paul Konchesky. Would Salcido really cost more than £3.5m?

Not sure, he'd be my choice too, but either way we need a left back and the baldy is at least experienced and solid at Premiership level, and better than Insua, which goes without saying.

Konchesky is an awful player. Our left backs over the last 15 years have been non-league standard; Bjornebye, Traore, Harkness, Insua etc - it's shameful.

I did, because he was the best full-back in the Premiership when playing for Fulham. I tend to spot these things.

Finnan was absolutly in a different league Bunny, but what I'm saying and as Mark pointed out, Konchesky can very well come here and do a very good job.

Salcido has no Premier League experience though, and can't even get into the PSV team at the moment. He's been angeling for a move anywhere for a while now, and the player that performed in the WC is not the player that has turned up for PSV. Still, good player and it's probably a close tie between the players regarding ability. Konchesky is more solid defensivly and Salcido is better going forward.

Either of them would do for me. The most important thing is a new left back.

Tough call this one, if he waits to see if the Masher move goes through we would have a bit more cash to play with. However, as we are so short at LB we can't risk waiting until the last hour of the transfer window to nail down a deal for a top LB.

If Konchesky ends up here at least Roy knows what he's getting and knows what the lad is capable off without waiting for him to adapt to the league.

Ok - so spot this one. What do you prefer:

1) Aurelio, backed up by Insua & Agger
2) Konchesky, backed up by Aurelio & Agger

* Please note, I don't rate Konchesky highly but we cannot go into the next few months with scenario 1 in my opinion.

he'll go straight into the first team when I think aurelio is a better left back than him. roy would rather play a concussed center back at left back than aurelio.

Konchesky is a very solid LB, is good going forward and occasionally scores spectacular goals.

Sometimes I have difficulty understanding the snobbery on this messageboard.

The idea of bringing John Arne Riise back is laughable.

Option 3: buy a good young left-back

roy seems intent on filling the squad with aged cloggers (joe cole aside of course, but he's no spring chicken either).

It's because he's not some foreign guy who had a good World Cup but can't get in the first team of some Dutch side.

I think you have a mental image of JAR that doesn't match the reality. In his last season with LFC he was awful. His defending was shambolic and he didn't score a single goal.
